Add fun puffy applique embellishments to your quilts with this easy faux trapunto technique. There's a companion post here where you can see it in use for other patterns as well - like googly monster eyes. www.shinyhappy...

Thank you so very much for sharing your amazing gift. It appears quite simple. In actuality it is your talent and love for what you create that makes this appear simple/easy. I have been soft sculpting with material for many years. Your demonstration is exacting. With practice, also achievable. Thank you, again. Looking forward to the joy this has inspired.

Very cool! Do you ever have trouble with the stuffing shifting around after the quilt is finished? Would it be beneficial to hand stitch the slit in the back of the applique closed?
@WendiGratz
@WendiGratz 8 лет назад
No trouble with shifting - but I should have clarified that I'm using polyester fiberfill (this is a review of my favorite brand www.shinyhappyworld.com/2013/10/stuffing_review_giveaway.html) which is machine washable. There's no need to sew up the opening in the back because you stitch the shape in pace all the way around the edge. There's nowhere for any escaping stuffing to go. :-)

Nice tutorial, would it be possible to do the whole piece like this not just the tree part?
@soggyprog
@soggyprog 2 года назад
I have a question about applique quilts. What is the the right etiquette/traditional way of sewing applique on a quilt? Should you applique on just the quilt top first and then assemble the layers and then quilt it? (so that the back of the quilt won't have the reverse outline stitching of the applique) Or are you supposed to see the reverse stitching of the applique on the back of the quilt as part of the quilting design? Thank you!

Awesome tutorial!! Question, when you do this on a heart , it has a wider middle, when you wash it will the batting move?
@WendiGratz
@WendiGratz 4 года назад
It depends on the batting. I use Warm & Natural and it can be quilted as much as 10 inches apart.

Way too cute. I have a Bernina 830 and was wondering how you do the "hovering" that you mentioned
@donelleashley
@donelleashley 8 лет назад
I have the 770 and to turn hover on you have to find your presser foot settings, if it has one. My machine and manual is packed up for travel tomorrow so I can't be specific. Try your manual or Google it, there are videos on where to find it.

Could you use the zig zag stitch rather a straight stitch on the tree?
@WendiGratz

Sure!
@jwall6006
@jwall6006 8 лет назад
Wendi, could you have 1 piece of fabric and 1 of fusible? So it stays in place until you sew it?
@WendiGratz
@WendiGratz 8 лет назад
I don't think that would work. I think a fusible interfacing used as the back fabric would be too weak - and it would be awfully hard for the heat to penetrate enough to melt it through the layer of stuffing. Even using fusible adhesive on felt requires a significantly longer press time than what the package recommends. If you're worried about it shifting around, I'd just use a fabric glue stick instead. I've done that before when I position a bunch in one batch and then take the stack over to the machine for sewing in one batch and it holds great.
@jwall6006
@jwall6006 8 лет назад
+Wendi Gratz thank you, that's really good to know. I love how it looks. I'm working on my monster quilt for my first grand baby who's coming in December. The class has been super helpful.

What does the back of the quilt look like ?
@WendiGratz
@WendiGratz 5 лет назад
I do this work before I add the backing, so you don't see it from the back. It just looks normal-flat.
@amandaglidewell8451
@amandaglidewell8451 2 года назад
I just don’t understand why you wouldn’t sew most of the shape down first, leave a small opening- and then just sew the small opening after stuffing. This way seems like you are adding a huge amount of unnecessary labor. But I guess people do things differently, it really is a lovely effect.
