How to Add Power to Your Golf Swing: The Secret of Snapping the Club for Maximum Distance

Swing force refers to the power you develop during the backswing and apply during the downswing through impact. Practically all of this power stems from the torque created as the torso is rotated around the hips during the backswing. When this torque is at its peak the downswing begins and unleashes this built-up power to produce a powerful swing through impact.
Many golfers would claim that the arms are a major source of power in the golf swing; however, nothing could be further from the truth. An arm swing requires the flexing of the arm muscles which slows down the swing considerably. Let me prove this to you: hold your arms straight out at your sides flexing your shoulder and arm muscles as hard as you can.
It is impossible for the torso to rotate around the hips if the golfer is swaying laterally. Also, it is impossible for a golfer to bring the golf club behind him during the backswing when swaying laterally to the right. Instead of bringing the club behind, it is simply being pulled upwards and out to the right side resulting in an extreme outside to inside swing path during the downswing causing poor ball contact and a slice. It also causes the golfer to make a lunging motion towards the golf ball during the downswing that may feel powerful but is actually devoid of any effective power.
The perfect representation of a powerful golf swing can be seen in a common children’s toy. The toy that I am referring to consists of a drum on a spindle with two strings hanging down on the sides of the drum with beads attached to the ends.
When you rotate the spindle back and forth between your palms the strings fly around the drum striking the drumhead with the small beads. As can readily be seen, the power in this toy is being generated by the rotation of the spindle and transmitted through, not produced by, the strings.
The power of a golf swing is generated by the rotation of the torso around the solid base of the legs and hips. This buildup of power lies in the tension created by a maximum torso turn with minimum hip turn, and if you wind up like a top from the feet up you will not create this tension. Most golfers will not be able to make a full back turn without exaggerating the hip turn, and this is perfectly fine because a full back turn by itself does not generate power

My number one issue is getting my left hip back. I can get everything else even the push up but because im used to basketball its almost more of a jump motion. Any tips on how to start the transition to avoid this hang up at the end?

Great video? This is why a “good” swing can still be mediocre with regards to distance and perceived power. Need to get to the range NOW! some of the best swings and ball flights I’ve experienced have been with more reckless abandon and letting my body move dynamically. Post up is subtle but always present. Thanks again!!!!

How do you post up and extended that lead leg while also getting the club low enough for after ball divot? That’s the part I struggle with (well 1 of the parts I struggle with 😂)

Aha, so you actually want to compress the ball, is that it Daviddear... or do you prefer Dear David? Seriously though, many of us many of us are not doing one of the following at impact: - FULLY extending our right arm at the elbow - FULLY extending our shoulder muscles - many mistakenly contract the shoulder muscles as though straining to pull will mistakenly help generate power and speed - Stretching our left lateral muscle upward (ribcage area between hip and shoulder) Here's a secret drill just for you and me but don't tell anyone, okay? Crumple up a piece of paper and put it in your throwing hand Raise the arm straight up at the elbow (where you would have it on a backswing) Vigorously throw the paper down to the point where you would have the golf ball What, is that the best you can do? Come on now, this time REALLY ROTATE/TWIST you shoulder and hip including... Drive your left leg into the ground, pushing hard on the ball of your left foot and locking your knee, stretch your left lateral UPWARD! Just be careful not to hit your toe with the crumbled paper - you don't want to hurt yourself...😜

I don't understand how this causes a whipping action for the club head. It doesn't seem analogous at all to the towel snapping action which seeps to have a totally different kinematic mechanism than the golf swing.

I would use the term unweighting, as in skiing. You don't actually jump. You just unweight your left side.

There is an old saying in baseball, and it applies to our game as well: "You can teach hitting, but you CAN'T teach power" It is a gift form the golf Gods. That is why they are on TV, and that is why we are watching them.

@@billhill4929 Bill, I use his methodology exclusively. I was being facetious in regard to his hitting with the legs. Rotary swing is absolutely the best instruction out in YT land.

Never skip leg day fellers. 1. Squats 2. Hack squats 3. Leg press 4. Lunges 5. Bent over dead lifts 6. Leg curls 7. Leg extensions 8. Calf raises 9. Wind sprints 10. Protein Shake If you consistently work legs at least once a week, your chicken legs will grow into powerful golfing legs and you WILL succeed.
