How close to the base does the item have to be?

Is this still an issue that it does not work? I'm looking at getting some glass break sensors and want to add them but not if they don't alarm. Great easy video to follow.

Could I also add a z wave glass sensor from a third party company to my ring system (I guess it wouldn't help that much since it wouldn't notify anybody)? I don't understand why Ring does not offer real glass break sensors!

Ring has glass break sensors but if you want to add a third party one, to make it actually sound the alarm you will have to do it in modes.

Any clue if this has changed in the 4 years since you published this video? This is exactly what I’m trying to figure out.
@BukuiZhao
@BukuiZhao 11 месяцев назад
Yes and no. In fact, not much has changed but the uploader of this video missed something. You can actually make the sensor sound the alarm by going to mode settings under your sensor.
@NB-Philly
@NB-Philly 11 месяцев назад
That was actually important part. Because if you use one of the sensors and it doesn’t actually help you protect the home, then it’s rather useless. I will give it a try. Thank you again.

Hi, I wanted to know if it was possible for you to connect a shelly that supplies power to a siren only when the alarm is armed and there is an actual intrusion of someone into the house Thanks

Have an old Piper system and the sensor will not connect via z wave let alone did I know this (tho wonder if alarm still won’t sound on third party sensors or if there’s been an update )

App appears different. There is no Secuity option and no manual option in the list that is available.
@ramkum1

Can I add third party sensors and simply be notified by the app when they trigger? I understand they aren't trusted enough to sound the alarm or call anyone, but is there no configuration that will allow the app to just notify me? On an unrelated note, can Ring's contact sensor be activated by another contact sensor by wiring them together? My house has old contact sensors and glass break sensors hardwired down to an outdated security panel in the basement. It would be nice to reuse them since they are invisible, and even better if I could hook up several hardwired sensors to a single Ring sensor. That way I could just buy one Ring sensor for every clustered set of windows in the same room.
@OVER-bENGINEERED
@OVER-bENGINEERED 5 лет назад
Absolutely. The ring sensors have magnetic reed switches. You would need to remove the reed switch from the Ring sensor circuit board and solder wires in, land those wires on a terminal strip and wire your existing switches to it. You need to verify the contact sensor states when they see open/close conditions. I do this with some Iris 1st gen contact sensors. Worst case is you have to use your old sensors with a relay.

Have you added other z-wave devices? I'm particularly interested in plugs and switches with energy monitoring capabilities. Does Ring Alarm have functionality for displaying home energy consumption? Or do devices I have only work as switches when added to the Ring system? Thanks.

I know what is going on. Apparently because it's a third party device it does not know what you are using it for so it defaults to it not setting off the alarm when armed. To make it set off the alarm you will have to configure it in modes. There are two ways to do this: 1) Go to your ring app. Open the menu, go to settings, then modes and automations, then modes, Home or Away (depending on what you want to config), then go to sensors, and find your third party sensor and turn it on. The sensor will now sound the alarm when armed on the mode you configured. 2) Alternative method which is a bit more easy to understand. In your ring app, open your devices. Go to security and then find your sensor. Open your sensor and then mode settings. Then you can turn it on and off for home and away.

October 2020 and Ring security system still will not allow any Z wave sensor to trigger the alarm system except for triggering the chime. Essentially the non Ring sensors are pretty much useless even after easy successful pairing with the Ring system. It deliberately blocks Zwave devices from triggering the alarm.

Some alarm systems allow sensors to be configured to trigger an alarm or just chime for off vs home vs away. Is there a config option to make the 3rd party z wave sensor trigger alarm. Just checking...

Jarod Miller No, but I did see on Ring’s site that while zwave sensors can be added, only ring certified devices will be used for security purposes. So that’s inline with what’s demo’d here. Ring just released support for a number of zwave smart locks. Hopefully they keep certifying more and more devices.

For most 3rd party devices, I would wholeheartedly agree with you. That said, I'm still getting a z-wave smoke alarm, so I get some kind of notification if it detects smoke in my house; particularly if I'm not actually at home.

That’s just fucking corporate greed! Obviously, the ring alarm system knows that the sensor is there and even knows how to use it. So it should know exactly what to do when it’s activated and the system is armed! It’s just ring wanting all your fucking money!

@@BukuiZhao at least Ring has that going for them that they just hide the functionality rather than immediately making it available. It's still corporate greed at it's finest, although Ring's contact sensor I think is the cheapest Z-Wave option on the market.
@BukuiZhao
@BukuiZhao 9 месяцев назад
@@Techlifeandmore It's not corporate greed. Because you set up an external device it defaults to not triggering the alarm because it doesn't know what it is for. You just have to enable it manually and it won't take long for someone to find out.

Well that's a deal-breaker. Wish I would have known that before I bought the starter package that came with two keypads ,3 contact sensors, and two motion sensors for 299.00. When I called there product support line, I did inquired before I purchased. I asked if I could use third-party zwave sensors the answer was yes. They sure didn't bother to let me know about the this major drawback . I was leaving Wink security I had setup. My thinking was that I was getting a better deal with a more simple security system. I have many Dome contact sensors and motion sensors already threw out my home and Shop. These little sensors are not cheap. I was hoping they would work until I had a chance to replace them with all ring sensors. I will now be taking this ring Security starter kit back to Best Buy now. Thank you ring. The way I see it if I buy your stuff with my money and pay for your monitoring service, then any sensor that is allowed to be configured with the system should work the same as one of your official sensors. So you're going to let me get robbed blind because I didn't use one of your official sensors, well that's a big middle finger to your customers. It is now obvious to me that all you are concerned with is how much money you can make off of your loyal customers . Shame on you. You know I was going to buy a lot more of your official sensors come payday that's okay I will look elsewhere now. I'll will now replace all 8 your cameras I have with Arlo or nest. I was also looking into buying 3 of your flood light cameras for my shop. Well you can keep those as well.
