Hope I can save someone from making the same mistake I made. The nut doesn't "screw" down into anything, be sure to stop if it gets tight even if the handbrake clicks more than spec. If you try to give it an 1/2 or 1/4 turn and the nut is bottomed out you'll shear the bolt right off like I did and it's an $$$ repair now.

Mine has a ton of play and takes a lot of range of pull before it gets good hold. But recently it’s been being activated without even being pulled. Do you think the issue is here or by the brakes. My original gues was by the brakes but it seems an issue could arise here

Why would you not take 2 seconds to disconnect, and move out of the way, the USB cables you have dangling across the hand brake area that you need to work on? Also, since you had everything open already, why not vacuum and clean up all that garbage that had fallen in there?

This should be a secondary procedure. Question is, WHY this happened? You need to follow process below during rear brake replacement and this will not happen. Simply skip step 4 if you only adjusting the parking brake 1. Release parking brake 2. If cables on the calipers can't be pulled all the way back to the limit of actuator limiter - Loosen parking brake adjuster nut under cup holder in the center console and make sure actuator reached its rear position 3. Remove caliper and press piston in by pushing and turning it clockwise 4. Replace pads/disks/bearings, whatever 5. Assemble everything back together 6. Do not touch parking brake 7. Start the car and press brakes strongly several times with a foot 8. Use parking brake now. Check if it has a play and remove it with a nut under cup holder in center console. Or if handle is not traveling up much, release nut a bit, until comfortable braking achieved. 9. Adjust nut so car being held on incline/decline

Why do Americans call them emergency brakes? What's the "emergency"? Whenever you park it should be engaged, emergency or not, especially on a hill. And "handbrake" or "parkbrake"is much shorter to say 😉.

from what I hear, if your hydraulic brake lines fail/burst while on the road, you're supposed to be able to pull the "emergency brake" (parking brake) to slow yourself to a stop!
