WHY IS PARKING BRAKE LIGHT ON. HANDBRAKE LIGHT ON WHEN RELEASED
If your parking brake light is on even when the parking brake is not engaged we will explain what causes that. The parking brake is also known as hand brake so some repair manuals may refer to it as hand brake light on. The parking brake light should be on when the parking brake light is applied however on older cars or cars in which the parking brake was used often can develop that problem. There is a switch that activates the light for the parking brake and if that switch gets stuck or malfunctions then your parking brake light will stay on.

I think the objective of this video is: 1: Locate the switch 3:20 2: Replace the switch OR entire petal/handbrake ratchet assembly. 👍It doesn’t show how to troubleshoot (clean, lubricate, realign, or fix a sticky switch) which might often be good enough to fix an old malfunctioning switch; which you should try once the switch is located. The end of the video 👎 shows how to disconnect the sensor/dash-light indicator 🤦‍♂️ (yes I hear the disclaimer in narration, however this is irrelevant to FIXING anything). It’s still helpful but that’s my feedback. Thank you

Urgent advice needed. My light goes out if the wire connects to an earth but that's what it's supposed to do but unfortunately it is fooked and stays on no matter what. Only other function is brake fluid level but that is fine. Wtf . This is driving me nuts.

@@juliacaraballo8987 After several months of topping up and the light coming back on - I have no idea why yours hasn't gone out - our mechanic found the cause was a corroded brake pipe. Fixed and no problems since. Maybe your problem with the light is simply a case of following this quack's method of getting the light to stay off!

Low brake fluid in the reservoir. Don't add too much ! It may overflow at brake job time. I have 2013 Hyundai (50,000 K) Under the hood to the right of centre near the firewall. Black round screw-on cover👍Problem is NOT the switch ! Been there done that. 🤔😑

@@arthurrimbaud7287 I fixed the issue. It had to do with one of my brake sensor went out, replaced it while I was doing my brakes and the light went off. Check your brake sensor might need to be replace.

Topping up your brake fluid reservoir could do the trick ! I'm not sure why . Cheers Eddie PS Mark down below also found this 'fix'

I have the same issue, and I am a millwright mechanic. As the brakes wear it requires more brake fluid in the system to fill the volume of fluid inside the brake calipers. You will notice that every so often you need to add a bit more to your brake reservoir because the level has dropped near the lowest level indicator. On a manual transmission car (I have) such as a 2013 or newer Hyundai, the clutch hydraulic mechanism is also fed from the brake reservoir. Topping up the reservoir will temporarily correct the light from staying on after the E brake is disengaged. Just be careful when replacing the brakes. You may have to remove some of the brake fluid that you previously added to prevent it from spilling over the top of the reservoir when you push the caliper pistons back far enough to install the new brake pads. This is purely a design issue with some cars that has obviously been overlooked to keep the cost of the car lower. The car I am referring to is my wife's 2013 Hyundai Elantra with standard 6 speed trans, with just under 50,000 Km. The brakes are original and I have added brake fluid 3 times to date. (Feb 14, '23) to get the light to stay off. We will be checking all four brakes as soon as the weather "brakes" in March.

Depends on the problem. If you feel like your handbrake is not engaging also known as not working properly or If you are feeling like the handbrake power is lower than usual then It's a big problem, you can drive but It's a major safety hazard and is highly not recommended to drive ! But If you are feeling like nothing has changed and the handbrake power is like usual then It's safe and the handbrake light might be showing because the light trigger malfunctioned or got stuck and Is an easy low cost fix.
