I like how at the end of the video you're holding onto the mic, because your fix didn't fix the tension. The whole point of a Boom arm is to be hands free. So. . . . . Clearly you didn't fix it.
@lvegatube
@lvegatube 3 года назад
3 tips I noticed for mine (using SM7B) 1) REALLY make that tension screw loose...almost to the point you think it might come out I did like 7-10 turns left I think was my sweet spot . 2) Make sure the tension points on the arm are COMPLETELY loose, angle, THEN tighten. The middle tension point is the worst one for me (and yes my hands are a little raw from doing it lol) 3) If you try to put it in position WITHOUT the microphone on there it's not going to sit perfectly. It needs the weight of the microphone to really make it stay. This helped me hope it helps you.

Blue needs to provide better documentation for this boom arm with a cutaway graphic that shows its inner workings. If users understand how the the adjustment mechanism works they would better understand what impact the tightening and loosing the different adjustment points will have. The best that I can tell, the plastic exterior adjustments dials on the joints are simply friction adjustments. At first I thought these were adjusting they spring tension. I could be wrong but the only way to adjust the spring tension appears to be the screw under the base, next to the stem.

@@pandabear631 You seemed confused. My comment is not a criticism of the video. My point is that it should not require a RU-vid video to understand how adjusting a microphone boom arm works. How it works is not as obvious as your ignorance. You are the problem with our society!

So in short the default tension is way too high to let the arm bend the way it needs to for proper positioning; loosen it a bunch until it stays where you want it then tighten to compensate for the mic's weight.

I knew about the screw in the bottom... I decided to adjust mine tonight, ended up breaking the middle joint screw, the hand-twist one. I wasn't finding the proper balance for the mic without the shock mount and it snapped the screw out of the top... I've contacted Blue hoping they might have a replacement screw to buy, but anyone who sees this take note. The hand-adjustable tension joints can break if you over tighten them. Don't use a tool to push it past what you can do by hand.

@MrARMBARS

I over tightened the hand screw joint at the very base. Trying to see if I can fix it somehow but it's a machine pressed tension coils, might mean I'm out of luck. It's only 2 months old. So... in my case the whole boom is mounted right next to me because I'm on a small desk. That means the arms are bent real tight. My suggestion is let the arm do it's thing and extend out. If it's too close to you, you might have to tighten it to the extreme to get it to stay.

@@Wild4 actually i was about to return it back to the shop tomorrow until i figured what the issue was 3 hours ago, turns out my boom arm was not assembled correctly from the factory. the metal wire (the spring) on the middle locking mechanism was installed and tensioned on the front of the boom arm rather than the back of it (which explains the opposite springiness). it took some pressure to do this but i managed to put it back in its place and now the compass arm is holding the yeti just fine. its really strange though since this is a brand new Yeticaster set, i think Blue should recheck their Q/A at the manufacturing plant because this is definitely an issue from the factory that shouldn't have reached the costumer...

Do you need to adjust the friction plates every time you move the mic, so it's stable in the new position?
@SublimeArchi
@SublimeArchi 3 года назад
If you put your mic on and get it fairly balanced with the knobs loose(using the screw on the bottom like he said in the vid), you shouldn't need to have them very tight. Get it close when it's in the position you intend to use it most in, then you should be able to just barely use the tension knobs. I have it set up pretty nice with my SM7B. On the extreme ends...fully extended horizontally, it likes to sag and fully back in rest position it likes to pop back right at the end, but in the middle, it works perfectly. I just tighten the knobs a bit more in those extreme positions to get it to hold.

@@Wild4 I just have a blue ember mic on the end. I began to tear it apart and try to figure out my other options. I found out that you can remove the middle joint and move the cable from the top of the elbow to the bottom part of the elbow. not sure if that makes sense but it worked for me. it relieved a lot of tension that I'm actually able to place it how I want.

So I set my tension screw as low as possible, and in generel tried many possible things, but it keeps springs up strait, not with so much force. but still doing it. I'm using a "Roccat Torch" mic. I think it is a very low weight. It weight about 300 gram. And Blue Yeti should be around 500-600 gram. I can't really add anything to the arm for more wait, it has in build fliter and all that, is a basic USB-C mic. Before I bought it, i check the blue website for specs, and nothing about a minimum weight. Basic all "Boom-Arm" have the "max weight" but as far i have look around i can't find anything on a minimum weight. (e.g. 500 gram) My main problem is, i did not buy it from new. So i can't return it. And if I'm super unlucky and got a verison with a malfunction "extremely high tension" Can i still do a RMA (submit/ship it to the manufacturer) (My blue compass is about a year old, and the owner before did use a yeti with it, so for him it works fine)
