I got a FREE Craftsman lawn tractor from a guy on Craig's List. It has the same problem, won't start, very slow turn over. Like everybody else, I checked battery, solenoid, starter and all wire connections. After watching this and other videos about this problem, I'm convinced it's time to adjust the valve gap. Thanks donyboy73

This absolutely worked for me for my 14.5 OHV Briggss riding lawn mower. I had bad teeth on my flywheel so I bought the kit 726A from the Briggs & Stratton web site for like 55 dollars with shipping and it arrived in 4 business days. After I replaced the flywheel and starter gear, I had this problem where the timing was off and the compression was too great for the motor to start. I found this video and used it and fixed my mower. THANK YOU !!!!!

Thanks for this video, I have been working on Briggs engines for years, and have never encountered this. I was given an MTD Mower because it wouldn't run, after contemplating why it seemed to be out of time, I stumbled onto this video. You saved me many hours of frustration and wasted labor. It now runs like a brand new machine.

This corrected the problem I had for 7 years. Never knew the engine needed a valve adjustment and it was easy to perform. Engine was so hard to turn over because the compression was not released by the valves so I had to turn the engine over by hand several times before the starter could turn it over. After the valve adjustment it works great - thks

Oh my gosh... Thank you so much for these videos. I have tried for weeks to figure out the cause of my starting issue and you NAILED it! I was able to adjust the valves myself and the tractor starts right up now. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!

I replaced the head gasket on my Briggs due to smoking, but when it came time to start it I had the same starting issue. I re-adjusted the valves as you suggested, and it now starts and runs great. Thank You for this well done video.

Thanks Donnyboy. I did this adjustment because, although my engine starts right away, it seemed like it was difficult to turn over. Also, sometimes upon shutdown, my mower would sometimes backfire - sounding like gunfire! Ha! I bought a new feeler gauge and there was a little too much slack, so I did this procedure. I'm usually a careful person, and was very careful with the valve adjustments. But it had been a long time since I used a torque wrench, so I wrote done "45 pounds" in my notes - then tried to torque the valve adjustment screws to 45 FOOT pounds - not even thinking about any other measurement besides Metric (?) Of course, it got tight way before then, and I twisted my T-20 bit almost off, before I stopped as it seemed something may break. I assumed the issue was a poor quality bit, so I put the valve cover back on, gapping and installing a new NGK spark plug w/ anti seize on the threads, and started the mower. It still runs fine - and has not yet backfired turning the engine on and off a few times. So, not sure if that has been remedied. Got the package of bits together and it has a lifetime warranty, (if I can find the receipt from several years ago). Was gonna watch the end of this video, when I saw the torque discrepancy - oops! Guess I'll leave them really tight since things work.

Best how-to on the net !!! Thanks donyboy73. I thought the starter was faulty. 12.5v with no load and 5.5v under starting load. Almost impossible to turn engine by hand. My small motor service centre told me it was the valve clearances not the starter but I had no idea how to adjust them until now.

Thanks for posting this video. After two years on not being able to start my 2009 Troy Bilt mower without jumper cables, this adjustment fixed it! I went through several batteries over the past two years and recently replaced the starter without any improvement. I finally took it to a local repair shop to fix the "starting issue". However, the service tech just lied to me about needing a new starter, rats nest in the engine cover etc. and refused to fix it. Instead he tried to sell me a new mower. This procedure is so easy to do on a Briggs & Stratton OHV engine. All you need is a good feeler gauge, torque wrench etc. It only took about 20 minutes to remove the valve cover, check the valve lash (mine was at 0.020 inches or five times out of spec) and adjust as per the instructions in the video. One small problem I ran into is that the adjustment stud came loose at the base of the push rod. That can be tightened with a 10mm wrench. The main adjustment nut requires a 5/8 inch wrench. After carefully adjusting the valve lash to 0.004 inches on both valves, I put replaced the valve cover and it started on the first try. I also noticed that the engine runs smoother now.

Thanks for sharing the video and for your honesty. It is so appreciated. I had this problem with a previous riding mower that I had, and end of selling the mower. It was a older mower, craftsmen. I now have a murray riding mower, that I bout from Walmart last year in May. Had I known, I could have had my brother fix it, kept the mower and had two riding mowers. It was a workhorse! It was only 13.5 hp, but it cut like it was 17.5 hp! My murray is a 19.5 hp, 42 inch. I really like it! The craftsmen was a 36"inch. It operated like a 42. It also could mulch and mow in reverse! The murray does not mow in reverse. It has the safety feature on it. Someone told me, I could disable the safety feature, and mow in reverse with it, but Haven't disabled that feature, as of yet.

I am glad I found this as most people think their starter is bad because the engine won't turn over, going clunk, and it is really that their engine is full of gas from a faulty shut off solenoid at the carburetor, or their valves are severely out of adjustment creating too much compression. Key on, valve is supposed to open allowing fuel, key off it is supposed to close. It can get gummed up and allow fuel past when in off position filling crank case, or you left key on and it filled. This motor is notorious for this and a manual in line shut off between tank and carb is essential to prevent gas in your oil. I am sure many shops have ripped off many customers by charging them for expensive repairs when it was gas in their oil. My suggestion to most if repairing the starter and the starter gear looks fine, would be to bypass the snap ring removal as most only needed to inspect the brushes and sand the commutator. Remove rear 2 bolts and slide internal brush pack out, then pull the entire assembly out from the other end. Sand commutator, inspect brushes, and grease rear shaft. You can avoid the grease suction problem by rotating shaft at starter gear back and forth while applying pressure to back plate. The trick to keeping the brushes in upon reassembly is iron wire cut in two pieces shaped like a horse shoe. They criss cross each other at center as one holds in two brushes and the other does same. Top wire must be 2" longer as it sits higher to clear lower wire holding other two brushes at 3 and 9 oclock, longer wire holds brushes at 12 and 6 oclock. Works perfect and slide back plate in, wires should stay as long as they are flush against brushes. Then pull them out and it makes replacing brush pack easy.

Thanks worked great, made my dad smile from ear to ear! Lol He had it into the small engine shop last summer they said it was the starter so they replaced it. Or so they said, so my dad requested the old part back. When they heard this they said there was a core change, my dad told them he did not care he wanted the old starter back. Turns out that they didn't replace it with a new one, they replaced it with a used one. Because I was mad at them I went out side to cool off and my friend worked there and he went out to remove one off another tractor, it was our old one he told me. They had him put it on that tractor because there was nothing wrong with it... So now they don't want it back... never going there again... $428.62 dollars later... after my dad took the bill to my friend the county judge...his name is Andy, Andy took it to the small engine shop, and threaten them with a lawsuit we got all the money back... Well thanks for the video, it runs just fine now...

Another satisfied customer! I wouldn't consider myself very mechanical. You made it look easy. B&S OHV engine wouldn't turn over no matter what I tried. donyboy73 you are awesome !! I have watched Many of these videos. You are the only one who mentions to turn the engine the 1/4 turn. Then to use a toqure wrench at 45 inch pounds. I like those little extra details. I got several sets of feeler gages. And the smallest one starts at 8 thousands.

I have watched several of your videos and find them very informative. I am a little confused on a few issues, so I have a fee questions. Can the starter not go bad and drag even though it turns the engine over fine with the plug out? When turning the engine 1/4" by hand, does it only drop the piston a quarter of an inch? My understanding is the piston should be lowered a quarter of an inch past top dead center. I have a 17.5 hp b&s I have to adjust the valves on from time to time. Why would this happen? Do you ever use loc tite to keep them in adjustment? Thanks, keep up the good work.

Works. Mine ( 14hp Briggs OHV on a ride-on mower ) turned over like battery was dead, or the starter motor weak. Same with a boost from a van battery! These engines rely on a slight leak on the inlet valve during compression stroke to facilitate engine cranking with a low torque starter motor. I guess with age, the valve gear develops play, leading to reduced inlet valve lift during compression. I gave the inlet valve a 1/4 turn at most on the rocker adjustment nut, leaving 0.004" gap on valve head at 1/4 inch past TDC (start of power stroke) and it started like a new machine. Exhaust valve had about double the clearance it needs so I reduced that from 12 to 6 thousandths although this doesn't affect starting anything like the inlet valve and cam design allows.

This is the single most comprehensive video I've watched on this subject matter. I watched another video and attempted this procedure ,but, they failed to mention the "top dead center" procedure so now I have NO compression and the engine will not start. That time was wasted! So...I'll have to start over again and this time I'll use YOUR video as a guide.I would add that the valve cover bolts are 3/8" head, the Torx was a T25, and the set nut for the rocker arms was 10mm on LT1000 Craftsman

Thank you for the video with detailed specs. My neighbor gave me a 2003 Craftsman with a B&S 17.5, same set up. The engine is doing exactly what this did prior to valve adjustment. I checked my starter by just pulling it off and watching it spin freely. My temp car battery is new, voltage great. The filler gauge I have stops at 3.5, so I need to get a 4. I also need to get a torque wrench that clicks (good to have anyway). I have a new plug, oil checked, and fresh gas. If this works and runs, I'll be extremely happy! I'll go ahead and buy a new battery, tires, and other minor things needed for proper maintenance. Just fantasizing now, I could have a nice riding lawn mower for about $200 and say the heck with the self-propelled.

Actually, valves out of whack will cause a starter to go bad by making it work harder and harder as the valves get worse and worse. The same goes for batteries that are constantly being drained and charged and boosted and drained again. I know because I'm fixing up a Craftsman lawn mower right now that has/had all these issues. By the time I got this tractor, the valves were out of whack, the starter was burned up and the battery weak. I have the battery problem fixed, have a new starter in. Now it's time to reset the gaps in the valves. All I have to do now is for it to stop SNOWING so I can go out and work on it. :-)

Great video. I had no idea what I was doing and came across your video. After watching it a few times to make sure I had it, I adjusted my valves and now the mower starts up great. Many thanks.

Donnyboy: I've just had a frustrating experience trying to adjust the valve clearances on my B&S 24HP OHV Twin cylinder Intek engine. It powers a 42" riding mower that I bought new about 10 years ago. I've faithfully changed the oil, plugs, air, gas, and oil filters but never had adjusted the valves because I didn't know how and it never was an issue until lately when it became hard to start, especially after I've been using it for a while. At first, I thought the problem might be the battery, the starter solenoid, or the fuel pump but by testing them, watching yours and other people's videos, I concluded that what the motor needed was a valve adjustment. It acted as if the compression wasn't being "let off" one of the cylinders which was working against the starter's ability to turn over the engine. The mower had another issue in that, sometimes, after mowing for a while, it would act like it was running out of fuel. I thought, at first, that the fuel pump might need replacing but while I was ordering the valve cover gaskets for this job, I also ordered a vacuum tube. Sure enough, when I pulled the existing vacuum tube (from the pump to the valve cover) the rubber had deteriorated; numerous small cracks, which I thought might be interrupting the vacuum draw of the fuel pump. I haven't been able to run the engine long enough to find out if that really was the problem. But, back to the valve clearances. I pulled both valve covers. The rocker arms, valve springs, and push rods were generously bathed in oil but there was not an excessive amount of oil. I examined the oil inside the covers but could see no traces of metal flakes or shavings. There was very little "play" to the rocker arms. In fact, I thought that (because I had a problem inserting the .005 inch feeler gauge into the respective gaps) they might have been adjusted too tight at the factory. But the gaps at 1/4 inch past TDC were supposed to be .004-.006 in. (I don't have a .004 in feeler gauge). I isolated the problem to one cylinder, the one opposite the cylinder that provides the vacuum by (1) removing both spark plugs and running the starter and (2) replacing the plugs, in turn, to see which cylinder was causing the problem. I re-adjusted the intake valve clearance several times on that cylinder. But it has the same problem as when I started. It cranks just fine and runs just fine. I can turn it off without a problem and restart it immediately without a problem but if it sits a couple of minutes after it is warm, it won't start again until it gets cold. I am at a loss as to the solution. I am hoping that you or one of your subscribers might have a diagnosis.Thank you

This video alone told me what I need to do to adjust my valves. They were so loose you could hear then ticking. I followed this vid and now it runs great. No ticking and easy start every time!

I was just about to buy a new starter when someone said something about the valve timing. I'm fixing to adjust it myself as I already have the new cover gasket and spark plug. I was going to pay a lot of money and your video gave me what I needed to save it all. Thanks for being on point and showing closely how to do it. Great video!

Again, the pace you talk, how you explain all the steps-all in all it could really be a manufacturers video for its customers. One can see, that you know, what you are talking about-already by the way you left a tiny bit more leeway at the outlet-valve. You are good!

Donyboy just happens to be a natural at repairing small engines. He could take apart an engine and rebuild it better when he was 13 years old. I could tell you stories all night about how good he is but if you've seen a few of his videos you already know that.

Thanks for the video. It saved a lot of foolin' around and money. The one thing I did differently was to lay the valve cover beneath the head to re-catch oil dripping from the valves rather than using the towels or cardboard.

Thanks for another great time and money saver video! I just purchased a John Deere lawn tractor with this kind of problem. Actually it is a 20 hp twin Briggs. One cylinder was nonoperational due to the intake valve pushrod being out of position. (Lack of maintenance I believe) Anyway, when all the parts were put back together and the valves properly adjusted, it worked a treat. Huge power for the 20 hp intek. Thanks again.

verry good video. easy to listen to. i really like the warning you gave about dishonest mechanics. automobile dealers are also bad about cheating people who know nothing about cars. a mechanic who worked for all major dealers said every dealer he ever worked for cheated . so beware.

Thank you sir for posting this valuable information. My 10 year old Sears mover has been exhibiting hard starting/slow cranking for about a year now. Tune up did not solve it. I did NOT know about adjusting valves on these mowers. I should have but, have not seen it in the owners manual as part of regular "maintenance". Anyway, after a quick valve adjustment, it now "bump starts" every time and runs a LOT better.

Thanks for this video, I was able to fix my mower without the big price of a new starter. I did notice that when I took the valve cover off there was a broken hex head bit in one of the set screws, so apparently someone else had been in there adjusting the valves during a tuneup. Went to the local lawn equipment shop and got a new bolt for $2 came home and adjusted the valves to .003 and walla runs great!

I have used so much of what I have learned from your channel. It is by far the best repair and maintenance channel available. I am hoping you can point me in the right direction. I have a Husqvarna W4815 commercial mower with a Kawasaki 15hp two cylinder OHV. I removed the carb for cleaning and have been unable to pinpoint a gasket kit (bowl, bowl nut/jet and carb to intake), carb is an LMF 2 or at least thats what is on the carb body. I do not expect you to look up the parts for me but if you could refer me to a site the would carry these parts I would be eternally grateful,if not, I understand and will always send people to your channel anyway. Thanks for all the knowledge!!
