I followed your instructions to the "T" and it works like a champ. Thank you so much for the time you took for the detailed set of instructions. This problem happens to me almost every year and the shop charges me 350 dollars to fix it every time. This time I got to do it myself in about 15 minutes after watching your video. I cannot thank you enough.

Must say Ty again Sir. My neighbor had the same issues with his john deere with briggs 17 hp engine. I had already done it on mine so rewatched these videos you have here just to make sure and refresh my memory and got his running perfect with no lugging issues on start up. He had gotten tired of having to put a boost on it just to turn it over... Think his were maybe .004 and .006 but forgot which order. Anyways you made me look a whole lot smarter than I am. Thanks again Donyboy!!!!

I had the exact problems , thinking it was just cold weather causing it. After watching Donyboy's vid, I made the adjustments easily,(after checking my owners manual for the correct specs) and now it starts right up even in cold weather sounding like a brand new starter. Ty, ty, ty, .... Love your channel !!!

Thanks for posting this video. After two years on not being able to start my 2009 Troy Bilt mower without jumper cables, this adjustment fixed it! I went through several batteries over the past two years and recently replaced the starter without any improvement. I finally took it to a local repair shop to fix the "starting issue". However, the service tech just lied to me about needing a new starter, rats nest in the engine cover etc. and refused to fix it. Instead he tried to sell me a new mower. This procedure is so easy to do on a Briggs & Stratton OHV engine. All you need is a good feeler gauge, torque wrench etc. It only took about 20 minutes to remove the valve cover, check the valve lash (mine was at 0.020 inches or five times out of spec) and adjust as per the instructions in the video. One small problem I ran into is that the adjustment stud came loose at the base of the push rod. That can be tightened with a 10mm wrench. The main adjustment nut requires a 5/8 inch wrench. After carefully adjusting the valve lash to 0.004 inches on both valves, I put replaced the valve cover and it started on the first try. I also noticed that the engine runs smoother now.

Just wanted to thank you for all of your "How to" videos. This one just saved me about $250. About every other year my 13 year old OHV riding mower has this strange thing you are describing...basically from the symptoms you would think it's a dead battery a solenoid or starter issue. The thing is, when you slap a meter on the battery it indicates fully charged. To add to the misdirection, these OHV engines WILL start if you jump the battery even if the valves are out of adjustment. Followed your great easy to follow instructions, adjusted the valves and Boom! Runs like new. You saved me $250 because that's what a local shop charges for repair, pick up and delivery. BTW 2 years ago when I had this repair done (same symptoms) I asked the guys in the shop what the problem was and they said, "oh.... dirty carburetor". I knew better because I had already removed and throughly cleaned it before it went to the shop and that didn't fix it. Guess they were just trying to keep me coming back every other year. Thanks again!

Thank you very much indeed for those two videos; I can imagine how much trouble you went to to make them. I live in France and have a 3 year old 'Wheeling' tractor mower (made in Italy) with a B&S engine, model no. 31A707. Two days ago it just wouldn't start and, to be honest, it had played up a little on starting from cold the week before too. I rang my my local dealer who told me it would be at least 3 weeks before he could even look at it. Plus there was the problem of getting it onto my trailer with a dead engine. So I did some research, found your videos, and within two hours, I had the problem fixed. Why two hours? Well, Itried the adjustments three times with no joy. Then I realised that I had forgotten the bit about going 1/4 past TDC. Once I'd done that, all was perfection and the engine now runs sweet as a nut. Thanks again. You have a new and very grateful subscriber!

Thank You for your video. After replacing a battery, solenoid and starter based on suggestions from many so called people who know 17.5 OVH engines I was about to give up. The engine just wouldn't crank. I found your video and did exactly what you showed and the mower now starts PERFECT! Just like it did when it was new.

After removing engine starter and then being told it's the battery, not the starter. I purchased a new battery only to be disappointed that the engine still wouldn't start. Positive it was the starter I was looking for a replacement online and came across your video. After reading some of your feedback I decided to try and follow your directions and the tractor is starting like a champ again. Can't thank you enough. We had been turning engine counter clockwise also and jump starting engine.

@f355911tt

I am glad I found this as most people think their starter is bad because the engine won't turn over, going clunk, and it is really that their engine is full of gas from a faulty shut off solenoid at the carburetor, or their valves are severely out of adjustment creating too much compression. Key on, valve is supposed to open allowing fuel, key off it is supposed to close. It can get gummed up and allow fuel past when in off position filling crank case, or you left key on and it filled. This motor is notorious for this and a manual in line shut off between tank and carb is essential to prevent gas in your oil. I am sure many shops have ripped off many customers by charging them for expensive repairs when it was gas in their oil. My suggestion to most if repairing the starter and the starter gear looks fine, would be to bypass the snap ring removal as most only needed to inspect the brushes and sand the commutator. Remove rear 2 bolts and slide internal brush pack out, then pull the entire assembly out from the other end. Sand commutator, inspect brushes, and grease rear shaft. You can avoid the grease suction problem by rotating shaft at starter gear back and forth while applying pressure to back plate. The trick to keeping the brushes in upon reassembly is iron wire cut in two pieces shaped like a horse shoe. They criss cross each other at center as one holds in two brushes and the other does same. Top wire must be 2" longer as it sits higher to clear lower wire holding other two brushes at 3 and 9 oclock, longer wire holds brushes at 12 and 6 oclock. Works perfect and slide back plate in, wires should stay as long as they are flush against brushes. Then pull them out and it makes replacing brush pack easy.

I was at the end of my tether when I found your video. I had charged and checked the battery, bought a jump starter, stripped the starter down and cleaned it and still the engine wouldn’t crank. Followed your video and found the exhaust valve tapper was so loose it wasn’t even on top of the valve. Sorted it all out, reassembled it and it fired up first time. Thank you soooo much for your very clear and helpful video.

Enjoy your videos and have learned a lot. Would have paid a lot for repairs by someone else or given up and replaced several items had I not found your videos. Well made and easy to follow. Very good attention to details that an amateur like me can follow. Have watched many even though I don't have the particular item you are working on, but still learn things applicable to something I have. Thanks

great , the mower would start sometimes but, I was looking at carburetor issues and then I thought it was turning over awfully hard so I looked at my rockers and they were barely hanging on. and the intake rod push was bent. i straightened out rod and adjust valve's ,BOOM my mower runs better than it has in 1 1/2 years and it is 3 years old even with the slightly deformed and weakened rod, I am currently ordering some new ones. thanks you also convinced my stubborn father to check them.

Great video. !!!!!!!! another good thing I'd like to mention about these engines is that the carb has a electrically controlled fuel pin that screws into the bottom of the float bowl. This thing when it FAILS will cause fuel to overload the engine and cause a hydrolock. Correction to this if you dont have the 100$ to replace it is to cut the pin off with bolt cutters and grind it smooth. after u do that screw it back in and your all set to go.

Mr. Fraser - this may be too late but I have a t1000 like you and replaced battery, coil and plug. As I was adjusting the valves for the third time my second pair of eyes noticed the aluminum intake rocker arm was BENT! A quick straighten on the bench vise and POW, it starts like a dream. Hope you get it going too.

I had the exact same issue after changing a head gasket on an Intek 18.5HP (and skipping the valve adjustment step out laziness). I pretty much knew it was a valve clearance issue, but this video was great because it shows the symptom perfectly along with the fix. Very helpful, thanks!

Thjanks for all your great videos. Based on some of your videos and others; I just repaired the deck on my 2003 Cratsman LT1000 and that is running great. It has a B&S Intek 18HP engine. It sat outside all winter and started up very easily after I charged the battery. Unfortunately a few days later I tried starting it and the battery seemed dead again. Put in a new battery and it started great. However I have a problem with the engine which fires up really well, sounds great, runs great for an hour or so then dies. This has been fairly consistent for 2 seasons now. Sometimes if I let it sit for a couple of hours it will restart and run fine for another hour or so. I replaced the gas cap thinking it might be clogged and not allowing easy gas flow after that hr or so. No luck with that. I check the oil and the dip stick seems to have oil all the way up when I first remove it for checking. I wipe and reinsert and it seems fine pretty good. Is that normal? Since a 2 yr. old battery failed I thought I might check the voltage while running. It's only about 12.6VDC. Could that be my problem. The Amp-meter is not showing any movement at all.

Great video as always. So far I've adjusted the valves on many mowers but haven't been lucky enough to have that fix the problem. In my experience with the Briggs engines, it's always the automatic compression release that stops working and makes it hard to turn over.

Looking at the front sitting in front of muffler, the exhaust valve is the top valve. Exhaust is .005 to .007". Intake is .003 to .005". Check rocker stud is not loose. This was my problem. I'd set valve clearance. Run a day and then it was hard to start again. Kept checking and resetting the valves clearance again. Now starts super easy. No sputter during running now.

I have a fourteen year old Toro Wheelhorse with Briggs-Stratton 15.5 engine. The video showed EXACTLY what I've been going through (including buying and installing a new starter). As you indicate in the video I placed cardboard and a rag under the valve cover before taking it off… surprise!!! When I removed the cover not only oil but a gush of gasoline mixed with oil came out all over the garage floor! This "can't be" good! :0( I'm almost afraid to ask, but… what does this mean? Well, I found out that this "means" that the float is stuck in the carburetor… looked at a few videos on how to clean the carb but when I got out to my engine I find an electrical connection on the bottom of the bowl where the video showed a simple bolt to loosen. Looking now for "how" the electrical connection is properly removed and of course then the bowl. Not sure how often you look through these posts, but hope to hear from you soon.

when you adjust the valves just remember to put your finger over the spark plug hole and feel for air pushing out. this is compression stroke, then take a flashlight and look into the hole while turning the flywheel until the piston comes all the way to the top, after it does this bring the piston back down one inch. This i can assure u will be the time to set your valves to the manufacturer specs. Hope i helped. if this doesn't fix your problem then move on to other things in starting system.

Hi, i fixed a Husqvarna ride on last week which had the same problem as you are facing with your motor. the solution is to check the cam shaft, there is a small lever attached with it which works as de-compressor. if you find its broken then you need to replace the camshaft as it comes as one part. then set the valves to factory setting ( intake .08mm and exhaust .13mm). cheers!

@scbjgs you may want to replace the carb kit and check the flywheel keyway

@jswiter could be time for a starter. make sure it's not flooded in the cylinder. sometimes these carbs leak feul into the cylinder and when u go to start it it's locked or hard to turn over because of the fuel in the cylinder, had this happen to me many times

I have have just like yours.. Is there a way you tighten the deck belt on this mower and do have a video on that as well? Thanks

@siemenstraffic it opens up during operation and turns off when u turn the tracotr off. there is a valve in it that stops fuel from going in the engine when u shut it off, preventing backfire

The "Timing" of these videos were Perfect for me! Looks simple enough so far Don...does everything your showing here, including the Gap apply to all Single Cyl. OHV Briggs ?

quick question. I following the instruction and it did help. One thing i noticed is that there is a lot of gas on my spark plug. I have to crank it over for a minute or so and i see gas coming out the exhaust and then it will start. Is there something else wrong or did I do something wrong? Once it is started it runs well. Any help is appreciated and thanks for all the great videos. You're doing a great service!

Hey Dony, I am not able to find my adjustment gap on my YTS4000 ohv 24 hp platinum. Do you know this one? . I have looked every. Your choke video on this model helped once! Thank you

Lol, at first I thought OHV stood for Off Highway Vehicle, not over head valve. That would be an interesting type of racing tractor.

Thanks for all the helpful videos! I replaced a broken flywheel key on my 14.5 B&S OHV yard machine riding mower. I also adjusted the valves. Everything seems okay but when trying to start nothing happens and I cannot turn the flywheel manually. If I loosen the flywheel bolt I can spin the flywheel and also engage it by attempting to start the mower. Yet, if I tighten the flywheel bolt even slightly, the flywheel will not spin. Any thoughts on what I am missing? Thanks!

Great video. I've adjusted the valves, double and triple checked them but it still won't turn over with the starter. When starter gets to the point of opening the ex, it stops dead until you manually turn the flywheel. help!

Great video, thanks. I have adjusted valves several times (they were not sloppy to begin with) and have the same exact symptoms. I am thinking either the starter or compression release is the problem. If I can turn the engine by hand with the plug in am I correct to assume it is most likely the starter? BTW I am using my good F150 battery.

Where do you find the specific valve lash (clearance) manufacturer's specifications on your lawn mower? They are certainly not in the owner's lawn mower booklets.

Great video, as always. Any suggestions as to how to make sure you get the right bolts back in the proper places, especially when you need to take several things apart for a repair. Thanks Tony Port Hadlock

If valves are out of adjustment on these one cylinder briggs can that cause the engine to backfire? I have been told that but, wasn't sure.

usually not, sometimes the top bushing for the crankshaft causes a knock, do a search in my videos, i have one on that subject

I have a B&S 21 hp . I have the same symptoms as the lawn mower in this video. I adjusted the valves; still have the same problems. Battery is good, starter is good, cycles through with no problem without spark plug in. what else might it be? i would appreciate your input thank you in advance.

hello donnyboy. Enjoyed all your vids on briggs and stratton engines and how you explain things, thanks, good advice and easy to understand, I wonder if you could help me with a wee problem on my older model husquvarna/ with a briggs and stratton 12 horse power,,,, power built ,,,,,syncrho balanced engine. ??? The starter seems to be ok had it off cleaned up and turns the engine no problems with plugs removed.. So I replaced the plug put the starter back on and hey presto it worked. Then after a couple of start ups the starter jams again engine seems to lock it up again. When the starter engages the flywheel the engine and starter seem to lock up up with a clonk. The engine runs great with no rattles clanks smoke or any faults but some how jams the starter.. I think some thing needs adjustment but unfortunately cannot seem to locate a cover as with the OHV models for adjustment.. Will i have to remove some thing else or is there some thing I have to do in order to find out what the problem is. I dont want to have to buy a new stater then find the problem is still there.I live in a remote part of the Scottish borders UK, so rely on my ability to sort out most problems for my self but this has me a bit puzzeld. If you could help me out advise etc, I would be grateful to your knowledge and assistance , thank you . enjoy. TYPE/ 0167.01 MODEL/282707 12.HP. SYNCHRO BALANCED
