In this video I run through the adjustments on a petrol Ferguson governor. This is for the tractors with the Standard motor company engines, TEA20, TED20, FE35, MF35, 135 etc. The same procedure is for a Zenith 24T and 28G carb.
Very good video Bundy and easy to follow your instructions. I noticed how all your jubilee clips are all neatly inline, your a man to my own heart, attention to detail, I bet all your split pins are nicely trimmed, it’s like a signature of the work you have done. Thanks for a great presentation 👍
Watching this video (many times over the last month) allowed me to sort out our TEA20 today. I followed your videos on rebuilding the TEA20 engine and finally it is running strong. We have owned the Fergie since 1980 and it is now running like a new one. Thank you Lance, you are a wealth of knowledge and your teaching style is so easy to follow.
My screw doesn’t go in much at all and then it’s like it hits a dead stop no real tension at all just free then within a half turn it’s tight and it’s like it’s not holding it back it sounds like it will just keep revving if I let it
Thanks Lance, your video and step by step instructions have enabled me to set the governor on my 1957 MF 35 petrol tractor, so that it preforms so much better. You are a GEM !
Just set mine up this week after having the front end apart with leaking timing cover and govenor seal. I couldn't get it idling right, and finally worked out it was the vertical governor shaft not putting enough pressure on the horizontal governor arm!! I wound it out and now it's running like a dream 🙂. Just some advise for all the people seeing this. Thanks lance!!! Ur vids are amazing, and preserving many generations of tractor enthusiasts!!
Hi Lance, Just seen the latest video, a great explanation, I will run through it on my 1950 TEA 20 here in England, I'm slowly restoring and your videos have been giving me the confidence to get it done myself, It's been 30 years since I used to mess about with engines and i'm really enjoying it, I've just completed the tappets... thanks to you. Looking forward to the next. Thanks from the UK. Simon
Very helpful Lance, you clearly know your stuff, unlike many on RU-vid! ( I saw one recently where a bloke started to put the carby onto a TE20 back to front!)
Thanks Dude. You just made my day. I have been having this problem for months on my tractor with no power kick when put under a load, your video just made it easy for me to fix and get her running much better. I now know too that my spring is just very worn out, so I ordered a new one and will be putting that in when it arrives. But for now she is running a lot better.
My engine is ready to come out but I got shut down by winter, -12 at night and -2 F during the day. I did read the book on how to do it but it is always better when some one shows you and gives some extra tips not in the manual. I look forward to every post, they are always interesting and informative no matter what the topic. Even the weather! Have a great 2018!
Brilliant. Thank you. I will redrill it.....knowing little about tractors your videos are so helpful and now personal help! Superb. Thanks so much. Robert
Hi Lance, great explanation. I started my restauration 2 years ago. But with your videos i'll solve any problem. In Germany its not as easy to get all this information. Many thanks. Best regards from the Baltic Sea. Stay healthy and happy
Hi Lance . My name is John vanden Akker. I live in London , Ontario in Canada . Thankyou for the tutorial on governor settings. I have just purchased a 1952 tea 20 that has not run for ten years. My fergie is outside amd today's temperature is -17 celcius. Your videos and personality are always a gift for me to watch. Thank yours
I have been watching your videos, I grew up on a farm with three brothers and a guy cousin and my dad and uncle had a tractor repair business. I worked on tractors for years enjoy watching your videos, can’t do much anymore being 70 some years old with arthritis Keep up the great work!!!
G day Paul, Old age does catch up for sure, glad you enjoy them and if you know of a better way to go about something on a video I have done be sure to drop me a line. There is more than one way to do most jobs and I don't mind learning.
Hi Lance Looks like my Xmas wish came true and couldn't have come soon enough as I was getting really lost in the manual explanation. I have watched all of your vids on Tea20 which a true God send, keep up the good work.
Great video Lance ☺️ I've just rebuilt my fergi engine been in the motor trade long didn't know nothing about tractor even though come from a farming background but your video really helpful 💯👍👌🥰
Mr Bears I too am having troubles with my rod. Where yours is sticky, mine is sloppy. I have looked behind where you stick it in the hole and it's just slopping around. After watching your video I see it can be adjusted, shall do it tomorrow. Thank you this is not the first time you videos have helped me. I have inherited a neglected 49 Fergie and I am determined to fix it, wouldn't be possible without your information, Thanks again.
Happy new year Lance . This video has been posted just in time for me . The govenor was hung up inside the timing cover pulled all the front end off fitted a new govenor , put it back tougher but had now idea how to set it up . Alls good now as my ( phanny ) is running spot on cheers mate love your videos
Awesome video! I hope it helps me. I rebuilt the carb on our to35 and pulled the clevis end off of the rod. I did measure the length but found out later I didn't get it back to previous length. I could only get tractor to start but not run. My kit instructions were terrible! My kit was from tractor supply. After searching RU-vid videos, I found that I didn't replace rubber seal on throttle shaft. When I tried to replace the seal, I popped out the brass piece that holds it in and lost it, but found it a few days later. I'll work on that as soon as rain stops today. Not sure if this seal prevented tractor from running. I originally rebuilt carb because something stuck open in carb and an entire tank of fuel drained out through carb from one evening after use to next afternoon after work. My carb was so gunked up, it looked like a kid made a mud ball. The inside looked like someone was using it to pan for gold. I had to soak it for two weeks in my parts washer. But, even after cleaning and new needle and seat, needle doesn't freely drop with float while bench testing for float drop measurement. Hopefully it will with fuel pushing on it. My kit doesn't have spring or clip on needle. A mechanic friend suggested making a clip from a paper clip. Also, throttle would never stay, always had to be held in place. So I removed long rod. Spring was broken into a few pieces. I replaced round gasket and cut down a generic spring. Now I need to get everything back together and adjust tension. This video should be of great assistance.
Thank you, I've been waiting for something like this. I have a Fordson Dexta with the Standard 87mm, and no petrol manuals exist for it, apparently. I'm located in Ontario Canada and will have to wait until the temperature gets a bit closer to freezing before I adjust it. :)
It warmed up a week or so ago, and I got the throttle linkage and governor adjustment straightened out. Now when I'm piling snow and can't go any farther the wheels start to spin and the engine doesn't bog. Thanks.
Very many thanks Lance. This is a great video. I have a 1954 Massey Ferguson TO 35 that I got as a gift from a good friend of my mine, who left this world a year ago, and I have a great time getting it to run right. I think my girl-friend Fergie is more fun to work with than my wife. For one thing, Fergie does not nag. And by the way, those who think I have an accent, I have a lance to prove I don't. If you would spare me your comments, I do not have to go looking for my spear, which in all likelihood my wife has thrown in the trash.
Took the missus to the big box store to look at fridges. The one she likes won't fit thru the door. I think she is trying to get a new fridge AND front door! Smart girl!
You are an excellent teacher! I like how you don't leave out little tidbits of information. I have always avoided any work involving governors because i just don't understand them. My TEA20 had this annoying issue with the throttle leaver always wanting to be in the idle position. Today, thanks to your video, I figured out that the previous owner installed the idle arm and spring upside down. So instead of sitting below the Throttle rod, it was over the top.. Hopefully that fixed it! Thank you so much from Canada!
That is very useful information, my governor shaft seems a bit sticky, so something is not right in the timing cover I think, looks like I have to take off the front axle and have a look in there. Chris B.
Hi Lance. Great video. I think I followed it properly :) Do you know, should the throttle handle stay where you leave it or should it (like mine) feel like it is spring opposed after half way, so it comes back to half way if you let it go?
Very helpful, I have a TED 20 and after it has been working for a while if it is under load or going up hill it starts to seriously loose power. If I pull out the choke and that puts on the throttle away it goes no problem. Am I right to think I should adjust my governor? Thanks Hywel
Thanks mate My TEA has been giving me the shits. After rebuilding the carby all it does is hunt. I’ll give your treatment a go and see if we can get it sorted Cheers Rusty
Lance Great Video, very helpful. I have TEA 20 1948 model. In video you show lots of movement in the governor arm at time 4:29. I have very little movement maybe 6mm at the pin location. Does this mean i have a issue within? Do i need to remove the timing cover and inspect? What will i be looking for? Thanks in advance.
Really like you videos been a lot of help, ive got a 1959 TO35 with the standard C 4 cylinder engine and cav dpa. the problem is ive lost my governor spring settings, ive got it started after pump build but below half throttle will shut it off and full throttle does not feel like "full" tach is inop untill a i get more parts. any idea what the governor settings should be on the standard C? it runs good just throttle position is way off.. maybe my max fuel setting incorrect ? need some help?
Thanks for that. I have a MF35 with a new governor but could not figure the throttle linkages out. Works like a champ now. Any ideas on a Ford 2000/3000 (not sure which) petrol governor. Im trying to figure this one out as well and your video has given me some great things to try on the Ford.
Thanks for this video. We were missing some of the parts for the governor, including the compensation spring at the top and the small arm. We located replacements. It’s not obvious from videos, manuals, or diagrams what the compensating spring is attached to on the fuel tank mount/radiator end. There’s a small hole at the top of that bracket, but the spring is so stretched when there, there’s no way to adjust thst it just touches. I don’t have the bracket on the separate tractor you show. Any links to diagrams or photos to show what the compensating spring mounts to on a ~51 TO20? Thanks!
On the Standard motor company engines it is onto the thermostat housing, I have not owned a continental engine as they were not bought over to Australia so hard to say.
Bundy Bears Shed thank you. I hope someone else watching will know one the Detroit Z120 Continental. I messaged a couple of photos and will grab a few more when I go to replace the fuel tank in a few days. I hope that if I use an eye bolt and adjust length to compensator spring, we can get it to smooth out. It may be the internal mechanisms, but parts were missing/poorly adjusted. Going to start from scratch again to see if we can get it smooth.
Hi Lance, I just did this today. The screw on the timing case, I screwed it in half a turn from where it just touches. Decided to split the difference, tractor seems alright. The book says 450 rpm for idle speed? seems low, what do you set the idle to?
Thank you I just bought a Te20 that needs a lot of TLC and your videos give me a lot of information can you tell us what the difference between the Te tea to and the others Thank you
Thanks Richard, The TO20 was for overseas markets like the USA, TEA20 was petrol only, TED petrol/kerosine, TEF20 Diesel with a 20C Standard motor company engine. Send me an email to bundybearsshed@gmail.com and I can send you some info.
Brilliant instruction.....thanks from uk.... just advice please....does the actuator rod from the dashboard to the governor linkage go through the hole in the thermostat housing as my ted20 had parts missing and the original rod seems too thick to go through the hole in a new housing I bought and the hole seems angled down don’t seem to line up with the level rod....mine had the housing missing completely so don’t know how it goes....help please. Robert
G Day Robert, Yes the rod should go through and the hole should be directly straight in line to allow the rod to pass through. Possibly your housing has been machined wrong.
Thanks Lance. I’ve been trying to diagnose a throttle problem I have where the throttle always backs itself off to about the 25% position when running. I try to hold the throttle at about 75% and can feel what may possibly be the spring on the vertical rod pushing the throttle back. Could this be the problem? The friction disc near the choke control is fully tensioned.
Very well done and a VERY helpful video. And now a question. Where can I buy linkage parts? My 1/4" adjustment rod is broken just above the lower "fixed" adjustment nut. Yes I can use a piece of all thread but it won't be as strong and I want an original look. Thanks and keep cranking out those videos! You/they are a LOT of help!
Hi and thanks for a fantastic video. On my TEA 20 from 55 the govenor kicks like a mule when i open the throttle a bit. It kicks two or three times in a row, every time. What could be the problem?
Hi Lance, love your videos, the setting of the governor in your case seems pretty Straight forward, however my fe35 has not been rebuilt so I was wondering if you have any tips on goner adjustment for an older tractor as my governor weights keep getting stuck at full fling when I adjust to your/factory settings. I feel I’m close to resolving the issue but it keeps happening . Thanks in advance Regards Kerry
Another spot on explanation on a subject which up until now always worried me to get involved with , I am off to check my TED20 this morning as it has suddenly started to cut out when I go from medium throttle to idle , I hope this maybe the reason why unless you know of any other reason .brilliant video once again , thank you very much
Hi there, I really enjoy your videos and have found them very useful in the past. However I have just had a go at adjusting the governor as on my 1949 TED Fergie, as per your video and I seem to have made a mess of it! The governor doesn't kick in at all now meaning the engine runs faster and faster when under no load and then when under load she has no power.....Any thoughts? She was running fine before i started tinkering but i enjoyed the video and wanted to have a go....I've learn my lesson now....If it aint broke don't fix it! Any thoughts? Cheers Lance
G Day Tom, All I can suggest is start from scratch and follow along closely. I cant tell yo what is wrong from here but the govarnor should try and reduce the revs not increase them.
Terrific video - thank you! I'm going to give this a try on my 52 TEA20 to rule the governor out as the cause of the surging I experience on and off. Tractor idles fine and drives ok but when under load as when towing something heavy it will surge repeatedly unIess I hold the throttle full open.
Sorry to be offtopic but does anybody know a way to log back into an instagram account? I somehow lost the password. I would love any help you can give me
@Eric Rogelio i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im in the hacking process atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I have a TE20. My Zenith Carby was in bad shape. I ended up putting an aftermarket carby on it modeled on the Shebler carby. It has never run the same since. I have done a heap of troubleshooting but can’t seem to get things right. I watched this video and realised I never reset the govener so I will try the adjustment and see how I go. Should I rebuild my zenith or continue to use the aftermarket carby? Thanks for the great video. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you for this great instruction Lance. I adjusted my governor system after a complete service of the timing cover with new seals and even new needle bearings but I have one strange problem. When I open the throttle from idle position and go back to idle again like you do around 19.30 the link to the carburator does not move back to idle position. The link is moving when I open the throttle but when I close it the link does not move. Everything is working free and fine on the carburetor. My only idea is that the spring sitting on the rod is too long or not strong enough but the spring is new and the only length you find nowadays for sale. Description says it fits for TEA engine. The parts list says 2 different springs were available depending on the serial number under and over 100000. When the engine is running and I open and close the throttle the engine goes back to idle. A much bigger issue is that I cannot reach more than 1500 rpm because of the governor stepping in much too early. Without the links connected I can open the carburetor throttle and rev up much higher but as soon as the governor is working it pulls back the lever much too early. I will open the whole thing again and check the weights of the assemby first to compare with another weight assembly I still have somewhere.
@@BundyBearsShed I did exatly what you teached in the video and used the service handbook as well and the procedure is the same. It does not work and I reach only 1500rpm what could be the proof that you are right and I have to face the fact that I am to stupid to adjust my governor. And I have no idea why...
Bundy For a TE20 I require the governor linkage and spring from hand throttle rod to governor linkage. Do you know if these are still available and from where I have run out of places to look if you can help that would be appreciated. Regards Wayne
Thank you for your fine videos my To/20 is running well after governor adjustment and carb work. I do however have a question. If I don’t turn the fuel off fuel the fuel starts to run out the sides of carb. I was assuming the needle and seat would shut the fuel off? Your thoughts and thank you for your help
@@BundyBearsShed ok, I figured it. Since it’s a gravity fuel system just slightly crack the fuel on and all is good . Now it’s not charging but I sent my best hand (pops after a Ford ext regulator. Have a good day and I appreciate the chat. I thinking your gonna need your own merchandise.. peace
Mr.Bundy ,Thank you so much for your Videos and the Time you put in to Produce them for people like me. I do have a question ? Is the Throttle rod (The 3/8 rod coming from dash ) supposed to be long enough to go through the gas tank support for the U-Bolt to hook up to the linkage from the front side of the tank support. On a 135
My Mf petrol tvo 35 runs fine at idle, but if you move the throttle a bit, it revs up to a very whirring, full revs. Its really weird and quite dangerous as I run the tractor with a loader on around our very tight yard. Sometimes, if you raise the loader quickly the tractor revs up slightly normally, but as our revs are funny, it revs up to full and you suddenly speed up! Any advice on this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Oliver
G day Oliver, Run through the video I think you have the adjustment wrong on the linkage but if you start by adjusting the screw on the left of the timing cover and work your way through you should come good.
Hi Lance, Great job mate. I have just got a 1949 TED20 and have followed your video on the governor set up. All went well but i can't stop the motor from hunting under load. Can you help me?
