I hope you’re having a great day and that video inspires you to live in more creative and frugal ways so you can enjoy more time for what matters. This long video is a departure from the video I usually make but this is a topic I’ve been wanting to tackle for awhile. The more I got into this the more I realized there was to say and yet most of it is still unsaid but that is the case with trying to condense huge nuanced topics into a short podcast-ish style video. I found this video challenge to make and appreciate the support of sponsors which allows me to take risks like making this video. Oh and this is Jen who once was wanderingk9 but my phone was hacked and all my apps/accounts/ Passwords compromised as well as my Apple ID password being changed!! It was the strangest thing (even Apple and ATT couldn’t understand why said hacker did what he/she did). Still waiting for my phone to be wiped and possibly restored to my most recent back up but in order to continue to be able to be connected to the rest of the world I had to start from scratch, new phone, new FB, new RU-vid and the list goes on! Fortunately I am stubborn so I wasn’t just going to throw my hands in the air and admit defeat! Enjoyed this video A LOT!!! I’m about to sell my small home and be full time. I’m excited and nervous!!

I'm 70 yrs old, and whether you live on the road or not, if ppl could understand and apply these simple financial concepts, they would find so much financial freedom. I figured these same ones out in my 20s, out of necessity, and they have served me well all my life. Writing down EVERYTHING you buy in a month (or better 3 months) is a real eye opener. You may think you know, but the truth is you probably don't realize how much you're spending on little incidental things.

Got hooked on van life videos during the pandemic. I've always been frugal so I finally took the leap, sold all my stuff and moved into my car. It's been 7 weeks so far and Ive made it from Portland, OR to Orlando, FL. Next I"m headed up the East Coast and may shift to a hybrid housesitting/carlife situation but who knows?! It's that every day is different that I love the most. Thank you for sharing!

Really good video, with positive information on money matters. I recently retired from the Air Force with an E8 status. So my retirement pay is very doable, I have never owned a house and have no desire to go in debt for 30 years. I always lived on base when I was in the military. So I became a nomad, my rig is a 2004 17 foot Casita camper being pulled by a 2022 Toyota Tacoma. I generally boon dock but do camp at campgrounds associated with military bases. They are very affordable and usually let you stay past 30 days in the off-season. I did purchase a small piece of property in southern Alabama to use as a future home base. And this property is listed as a year round off-grid residence. I didn't think i was going to work after I retired because my retirement pension is pretty decent, but I found a job in southern Texas that is called a Gate Keeper, basically it's working in a guard shack checking in trucks going into an petroleum supply company. It paid $30 an hour, it was 12 hour shift, 7 days a week and you had to commit to a 90 day contract. If you fulfilled the contract, there was a nice bonus at the end. I made enough money off this one job to travel the rest of the year and not touch my pension.....

This is such a needed talk. Reminds me of things I've been through to. Twelve years ago I smoked 2 packs of cigarettes a day...at $7 ish a pack I was somewhere around $400 a month! That's right!!!! I said no more and after a 40 YEAR HABIT I quit, cold turkey and suffered for about two weeks BUT I quit with no help. (I was the weakest person in my group). Also had a wine habit...a bottle a day...$200 a month at least! It was an addiction for sure BUT I QUIT! Now I allow myself a 12 pack a beer a month. No Starbucks, rarely eat out. Fix my own meals so my health and bank account are happy while I get to do more things. I need to quit smoking. I switched to American Spirits in my 20's and my lungs stopped hurting. Unfortunately, they cost $15/pack now. I don't drink, I don't eat fast food, I barely eat sweets. Smoking is the one thing I struggle to give up. I am going to use Chantix this time because I know several people who successfully quit. I would never judge someone for struggling with an addiction. I do judge people for eating out every meal or shopping for unnecessary items all the time and complaining about being broke. Maybe that's not fair because shopping can be an addiction.

Kids' backpacks for school are high cost/use. They seem to last only a year. So I bought my kids these odd little canvas bags with pack straps and we still have them and use them a decade later. The teachers thought they were too small and non-conforming. It was a compromise and worked well for us, which is what counts.

Another common mistake vanlife novices make is thinking they need to cram a miniature version of their sticks-n-bricks home into their rig. Showers, toilets & kitchen sinks are expensive & hog a lot of living space in a vehicle. These things take more h20 & require holding tanks & regular dumping, plus the weight of all this is something to consider. Be willing to do things differently. Living the nomad life is a positive lifestyle change, so try to think out of the b-n-sticks box. Living with a Less is More philosophy anotherwords can help ppl, whether they live on the road or not. I've always been one who learns what is needed to care for one's self and I think most people would be happier to learn how to do more. I'm proud of you and your success in living the life you want. God bless you in your travel and all you do.

Its so easy to allow the world to lull us into buying "stuff" thoughtlessly as if we " have to" and " should" Your reminder that " making more" will not SOLVE all my problems in life is so much needed at this time. Thanks so much! I do enjoy work, but other opprotunities to help with grandchildren have come up and I want to so much but worry how we will "get by" Yes! I can cut back !There are lots of habits I take for granted that are unnecessary .Glad I found your youtube!Hug that handsome pup! From me❤

People would be so shocked to learn how little my husband and I spend given our lifestyle. We live in a nice suburb where most couples both work and don’t live as well as we do on one salary. Like you, I compare what my money gets me. Example, I do my own nails because that equals a cruise every year. One thing most van lifers don’t share in finance videos (I’m only halfway through yours, so you may yet) is retirement planning. I watch so many spreadsheet breakdowns and very rarely see a line item for retirement investment. I realize some people may have a large nest egg (401K converted ro IRA or something) that’s earning their retirement in the background. I’m obsessive about having enough to live on, so.. I always wonder.

Thank you, Amanda! This is my favorite video of yours that I've watched over the last couple of years. From one Frugal Goddess to another... You Rock!. I am living my best life on my small pension and saving money every month. Financial freedom on a pension income and it's guaranteed until I leave this earth. Living in this amazing country and the province of BC, I also get a subsidy for half of my small apartment rent, a bus pass for $45 a year, and other wonderful benefits. I could work but staying under the income limit to keep these benefits, I prefer volunteering to help others. Frugal is the way to go.

I have spent the majority of my working years spending money without giving much thought to it. Thanks for sharing your insight and experience with us. Hope you feel better. Take care! 😊❤️

I learned a long time ago it's not how much you make; it's how much you spend. The second thing I trained myself to do is not want stuff. Owning a bunch of stuff is burdensome. Travel light my friend.

I want to add, it's not a "loss" of comfort, I think it's a matter of adjusting our perception of what comfort is. And I love the point about less consumption in general. I've been on a low waste journey for a while and I think this is coming up as a step soon, van life.. and I'm excited 😊

Such a great video. Thank you so much for your words of wisdom. Been nomadic for a couple of years again - second time around. The less I have over time, the less I want, the less stress I have, the more content with life I become. We create our own realities. Letting go of traditional beliefs about money and status is so freeing.

Hope you are feeling better. I started nomad life 5+ years in my SUV, with plan to go bigger in 1 year. Now in Nissan cargo van. Simpler as time goes on, also motivated by non consumer and minimal impact. I calculate cost per mile (fuel), which is cost per gallon divided by vehicle miles per gallon. In NM I'm paying $3 per gallon, if my mpg is 15, that's 20 cents per mile. Also I have budget and record everything I buy, so let's me decide when to splurge on mushrooms, kombucha or interesting detour.

I loved this video for a whole lot of reasons. It’s so good to get details about this stuff from someone who’s done it for so long. That dinner you made looked amazing!! Caramelised balsamic (I assume that’s what you were describing by ‘reduced balsamic’?) is so yum, and with all of that delicious stuff, it made me want to make it right away even though I’d just eaten. LOL! And yes, I’d love to hear about how you do RU-vid.

Very insightful video with a lot of practical advice. 10 years is a very long time for van life, but it's where you find your Zen. So you live your life according to how to sustain that Zen. We substitute our lives for job security, which is understandable but not very fulfilling. But also for companionship and a sense of community. You being able to spend most of your life in quiet solitude in beautiful surroundings is something you are able to do. I think that is very special. I love to see retired senior ladies meeting up and finally doing what's always been in their hearts to do, too. Hope you get well. Wear layers and warm wrap around scarves for your nose and mouth inside and outside your van when you're sick. BTW, I did my own calculation on how much I spend on coffee & creamer a year= $176. And that's only because I make it myself every morning😉.

We got a “cheap” $125 wagon for hauling groceries to and from the vehicle up into our apartment and then used it to haul kids around, needed some reinforcements like new bolts and the sun roof eventually frayed where the posts would hold it, duct tape worked to patch this holes (it looks like a piece of junk, we don’t look very fancy taking our kids out for a walk) but this little blue wagon has lasted us since 2015 almost 10 years so far so it’s a $12.50 a year well spent. I have been feeling the urge to buy a new one but I really like your formulas you’ve shared so I’m going to wait and see how many more years we can make this last, might be able to use it until kids are big enough to not need those free rides.

Excellent point about valuing your free time....I said the same thing just the other day (I live in a miniskoolie)... I said that I felt like I'm failing at adulting (I'm 57) because I'm NOT stressing over work/lack of income (I work on commission) and I'm not working 8am to midnight (even though my workday is supposed to end at 5pm)....but I don't HAVE to stress and work crazy hours because my TIME is more valuable than money. I can always make more money. I can't make more time. lol I LOVE that Frank's pets are more important than your own hunger. Love love love that! (I am same with my Tia) Brussel sprouts are my fave veggie...I do them same as you did (I have a butane campstove and not a cast iron pan but they turn out crispy and nutty and SO good; I also do cauliflower same way, for sauce I use a seed butter from Costco mixed with veggie broth and then rice noodles...SO YUM!). I've recently discovered showering at Rec Centers (currently on Vancouver Island), for only $3/shower....vs almost $70/month for my Anytime Fitness membership (which I have since cancelled; $840/year in my pocket now). Also, having lived fulltime on the road since April 2023, I can see now that I am wasting $100/month having a storage unit....one reason I'm returning to Ontario, to empty that unit/sell/donate all that's in there)...and save $1200/year....that's a lot of gas money right there. Thanks for putting this vlog together, hope you feel better soon. P.S. on IG I am @miniskooliewanda
