When I started traveling, on my first day in a new city, I took the "poor man's tour", taking the local bus to the end of the line. Get a window seat and make notes of stops that look interesting. When you get to the end of the line, get back on and do the trip in reverse. Get off at the stops you noted and walk around for awhile, then get back on the bus and keep going. It's a great way to learn your way around at a low cost.

LOL! That's exactly what I did in my youth while on annual vacations to Paris and ended up learning the public bus system like the back of my hand. I still use the public buses regularlry when in Paris and I'm now in my 60s. I like to look and see where I might want to jump off the bus, check something out, and then back on the bus to keep going. It's a great way to discover a new place. Greetings from Los Angeles

I was wondering if both (or one) of you are retired with passive income? Or are you relying on savings and monetized on You Tube? (Ok, well maybe not monetized until you hit 100k). Also, I seemed to waste money trying an eSim that didn’t work (Holafly) or I shoulda just used What’s App. I tried getting local sim card in Nice, France and no one seemed to know what I was asking for there. My french skills are lacking🫤. I finally fell back on ATT international Day pass which is $12 per day on top of usual cell phone bill. Not cheap!

Totally agree with you!! People consider slow travel (from a cost perspective) the same as a regular vacation but on regular vacation you are still heating / cooling your house, paying your mortgage, making car payments etc. and those are some of the biggest expenses which are non existent in slow travel.

I love that you keep your videos real and targeted to the majority. I’ve followed other travelers who made it big in RU-vid and then put out videos to the 1% rich and famous with focus on pent houses and expensive river cruises which are no longer relevant to me. I hope you do find that success but continue to produce videos for the majority of your viewers. Your videos are real, informative, helpful, and you both come across as relatable. Thank you for what you do!

14:41 Great advice. Especially when it comes to every day life with or without traveling. My friends of more than 20 years that have made a lot more money than I they stop at Starbucks, buy new cars, they're thirsty and they stop at a convenience store and grab a bottle of water when they are 10 minutes from home. They've been doing that all their lives, and they wonder how I can afford a house in Hawaii with a view of the Pacific.. It's their habits of reoccurring costs. It all adds up that put me on a higher level than them. It's 7:15 in the morning here, crystal clear, and 75°F.

I think the tip about using public transportation from Day 1 of a visit is an excellent one. Learning to use public transportation is THE hardest thing for me when I go to a new location. One of the travel tips I do not see too often on RU-vid channels is this one: Not all bus drivers are friendly.

When I was taking some of my German students overseas during the summer in the 80’s & 90’s, I took a small, spiral notebook with me, the ones that opened like a book. I put our plan for the day on the right, every expense for the day on the left. Receipts went into a pocket inside my shoulder bag. Sure came in handy when planning the next trip, but also for doing my taxes. When I was audited, they were shocked I had such detailed records. Evidently, others wing it. Not my style. Of course now, I would use my phone, but still reconcile each night before bed. 😊😊😊

Awesome tips! I basically followed your philosophy of "slow travel" when I went to Barbados recently and I think we saved about 1k :) We stayed at an airbnb, instead of a full service hotel, we ate all our breakfast in the airbnb, we ate all our lunches at local restaurants/cafeterias and used public transportation for almost the entire time. We spent time at the supermarkets buying groceries, which was fun and was an activity that didn't cost any additional money. We did a few touristy things but also spent time talking to locals at bust stops, local bars, grocery stores, etc. Had we learned to use the public transportation from day 1, I think we would have saved another $40, so this is a great tip.

Hi Guys, I cannot fault any of your advice. You are spot on with your recommendations, and your advice will save people a lot of money. Using public transport is a big thing, and Americans will find it hard to grasp as they are so used to cars. | I watched your podcast midweek and felt AirBnB may be banned in Europe. It is not that cities are against tourism, but cruise ships, overcrowding, and short-term rentals via platforms like Airbnb have driven rental prices up by 86% in the last few years. If individual families rented out their properties to tourists, it would be alright, but huge companies have bought thousands of apartments to make vast amounts of money. If you are a Spaniard working in the hospitality sector, you cannot afford to rent somewhere to live near your place of work. Barcelona's actions are a continuing trend that may very well affect where people who travel full-time like yourselves can stay. I am looking forward to your new videos from Turkey!
@BrianandCarrie
@BrianandCarrie Месяц назад
This is one of the reasons that we will be using short term rental platforms as little as possible. We were only in Türkiye this time for some dental work so no video. Next week we will have another Budapest video.

I think it is important to note that values change when you are full time travelling versus a vacation. For a vacation with limited time and usually a long list of things to do, then spending money to save time makes sense. For full time travel, you can afford the time, so you add time but save money in the mode of travel (like bus or train rather than rent a car). Having said that I still see the value in the car for a place like Scotland where a drive through the Highlands and stopping where you choose is an awesome way to experience the sights. I would want to ensure that budget all the time doesn't take away from why you are in a place to begin with. It is a balance. Cheers to both.
