Super helpful video, thanks so much! Very detailed explanation, step by step. Just done my air filter and plugs today following your directions. I used a hybrid methodology, raising the tank at the front and supporting this on straps from the garage roof, rather than disconnecting all the fuel lines and fully removing the tank, that I saw in another RU-vid video. Also used the hosepipe tip from Haynes manual to pull out the loosened spark plugs and lower and hand tighten the new ones. Took me way longer than 1 1/2 hours, but then I’m an old git these days. This and oil & filter now done, MOT this week, hey I might even get to ride my ‘97 Blackbird again before the Summer’s over. Keep up the good work! 🏍️🛠️

great vid, one thing ive always done it get a piece of hose just big enough so slot over the long top part of the spark plug, not to tight, and to loose. and with the spark plug in the tube feed it down the spark plug tunnel, then lefty loosey a turn, then righty tighty and screw the plug in, then torque it down, by using the hose on the plug you shouldnt be able to cross thread the plug on installation beause the plug will just stop if it tries to scross thread and slip in the hose.
@MotoSera
@MotoSera 3 года назад
It's a good tip that and thanks for sharing it. I've seen it done many times and it is worth doing if you are unsure or the access is particularly bad. I thread plugs in by hand with the extension, which personally give me enough feel for what's going on. But for sure we all have our preferred methods and the most important thing is doing what works for you. Thank you for watching!

Hello and Thank you. Just about to change out my rough running 04 plugs and your excellent instructional video has informed of all I need to know. I enjoyed listening to the birds outside your workshop too. I had a California 'Hurricane' when I lived in the USA and that was a roaring pain in the ass to change too. Its a fairly frequent service item and one would think an innovative design team could come up with easier way to do this. Maybe a rear hinged tank so you could keep all the hoses attached and a bolted on cross member. So thank you very much and 'Happy Trails'.

Dear Moto Sera I made the mistake of not having taken the photo (but with two hands it wasn't even that simple) when I disassembled the tank and now in reassembling it I'm sure I failed to reposition one tube, if not two. On board the petrol tap on the membrane side there are two hose holders and figuring out where to attach it with the right hose is already a problem, then on the sides of the tap, on the tank there are two other hose holders, one a little bigger than the other... on my tank the small one is free and the big one has its pipe inserted and this pipe would already be very important to know if it should be flying or inserted somewhere... I am writing all this to you because the bike won't start, I have imagined since immediately that it was a problem of lack of fuel. Having never used the tank cock and having closed and reopened it several times, I thought it was damaged; to confirm or deny this, I disassembled the tap from the tank and inspecting it I realized that it is necessary to have a small tube connected on the membrane side which causes pressure (or depression) so that it can allow, by moving inside, the flow of the fuel in the pipes to the carburettors... Thank you in advance for your opinion or expert advice Daniel, Rivalta (Turin), Italy

Hi. I just bought 1996 Bird, one of the first ones ever made. Registered in september 1996. I am planning to use Champion 8698 Powersport as a new plugs. They are standard, normal plugs. I don't need iridium. I also need the check the carb inlets and main jets, because it was originally resticted 100hp model. I think restricted inlet rubbers have been removed propably, but you never know. I used to have four CBR1000F's before this and the performance difference is surprisingly small. My Bird feels bit more powerful, but not that much really. It makes that knocking sound when it's hot on idle, but i have read that it is quite common with these. I think it's the balancer shaft adjustment or cam chain. Overall it's MUCH more quiet than CBR1000F as far as mechanical sound go. You don't have that canchain/alternator chain rattle on these that much when cold.
@MotoSera
@MotoSera 2 года назад
Honda specified platinum (later replaced with Iridium) plugs for all of the CBR1100XX models of all years. It's a false economy to fit anything else, unless you really want to be changing them every year, rather than every 24000 miles. It sounds like your's hasn't be de-restricted fully - the performance difference between the Blackbird and CBR1000F is significant. Knocking is either the idle speed is too slow (should be 1,100 rpm when hot), the cam chain tensioner needs to be replaced or the clutch basket is worn. Good luck, and enjoy the ride!
@myrskylintu1
@myrskylintu1 2 года назад
@@MotoSera I accept that i have to replace standard plugs often, it's ok. The knocking is present only when it gets really hot on town and it's not loud. Might be the tensioner i agree or the clutch. Worn oil pump chain is the one thing i suspect too. Cooling fan is very quiet on these, unlike on CBR1000F's.

What rad is that, interested in getting one as a spare. It looks thicker than the standard one, did you notice the bike running a bit cooler? Sounds like you've done a few Birds, do they all run a bit warm? I know those top caps on the plug leads should stop anything going down into the sparkplug recess, but over the years I've learnt to blow some compressed air (in a can or compressor if you have one) down into the plug recess, before undoing and removing the plugs. On the off chance that a bit of grit or shmoo is in there, don't want it falling into the cylinders. Also, because the plugs are so far down there, when you lower one down, it probably won't fall straight into the thread, it will skate around the thread which can lead to snot being scraped into the engine. Probably over kill but it only takes 20 seconds to do all 4. Good video though, you've given me the kick up the arse to service my new-to-me blackbird.
@MotoSera
@MotoSera 3 года назад
Blowing out the plug wells is a good idea for sure, good tip, thanks for sharing! The rad is a cheapy Chinese one off ebay. Can't say I notice it running any cooler to be honest. The carb ones show cold when riding and then the fan kicks in when the gauge is just over halfway. Injection ones run a bit hotter, but they are designed to and it's typically not an issue. Thanks for watching!

I bought a 97 blackbird just before winter here in Canada, i had to store it for winter and was wondering if the petcock has a prime position . My bandit petcock had a prime position hand it was very easier to start the bike after winter storage with the petcock on prime.

Hi , nice to see someone passionate about they’re blackbird and same as I am , quick question, I noticed you have an aluminium radiator fitted, did you put it on and is it updated as when I was in Austria a few years ago my blackbird was running ridiculously hot 110 degrees which was quite worrying and the fan still struggled to keep it down , I was wondering if that’s why yours is fitted with that rad and what’s the quality like
@MotoSera
@MotoSera 2 года назад
Hi John, the aluminium radiator fitted to mine is a cheap eBay one and was fitted by a previous owner, I expect as the original failed. I have had several Blackbirds though and can't say that I notice this one runs any cooler than the others which have had standard radiators. The 'bird does run hot, but it's designed that way and won't come to any harm. Thanks for watching!
