Very cool. I’ve been using 2K for about a year. Bought a quart from Amazon and they sent me a gallon😃. I love MCW paints/ that’s all I use on my race cars. I just started buying their enamels. Love they way they spray and how fast they dry, especially with the hardener.

Nice video! Oh, about Vallejo Shifters, be sure to use a gloss black as undercoat (Vallejo gloss black primer or Golden High Flow Carbon Black). Apply the shifter in thin layers with the airbrush for best results. If applied on a light gloss color, you get a nice pearl effect.

I just sprayed this same 2k clear over Createx pearl blue. The blue was sprayed over Stynylrez black primer. It was all sprayed through my BR Gaahleri Swallowtail. I'd have never got to this point without your help. Thank you!!! Please keep up the informative videos!

Great Video! For alclad chrome, you want to first use the alclad aqua gloss clear and then use the 2k. That will give the best chrome finish. Saw this on Gordan Tarpley's channel.

Nice to see another modeler that buys paint from the automotive paint suppliers. The products are the best and they can make very small amount of products for us model builders pluss they can mix ww2 or any military colors. Pluss you can add metal flake into your clear coat. Dont forget you can get true candy apple colors.

@raphael5353 the only way is to flush it out with acetone before it dries in the airbrush, if it's already dry in the airbrush put some clear coat in the airbrush to bond with the dried clearcoat and once they become one clearcoat you can flush it out with acetone

When i shoot these kinds of gloss coats on my models or small car parts i put them inside the clear plastic cake containers with a few breather holes drilled in to help with the chemicals cook off. Keeps your model dust free while drying.

I'm interested in seeing how the space dust works out. I bought some at my local Hobby Lobby a few mths back just haven't got around to trying it out yet. Also in my experience with 2k clears, as long as the activator and clear aren't mixed then it should be fine for quite awhile in nice sealed containers.

Good video, I've been using this for years and I do put it over decals, however I do 2 light mist coats first as I've had it wrinkle decals a few times. I usually do the 2 mist coats then a medium coat and then a heavy coat with about 20 minutes between coats,

Thank you very much for this and all your other videos. I decided to get into airbrushing to make custom video game controllers, etc... when using rattlecans wasn't giving me the results I wanted. This video was especially helpful. I was very intimidated about using 2k clears, but after you showed how easy it is, I cant believe I waited so long to try it. Most motor and building trades use 2K paint which, if using an isocyanate paint, increases the probability of developing asthma by a multiple of 90. Also, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reports that every year around 50 sprayers are diagnosed with isocyanate asthma and most have to leave the industry. Even at very low exposure levels, attacks can still be triggered.

@@danzo5521 keep in mind, to even consider getting any of the side effects you'd have to be a spray painter by profession, spraying it every day in large amounts without protection. As a hobby, painting it in tiny amounts on small pieces once every few weeks while wearing protection yu should be fine

The MOST IMPORTANT thing you forgot to discus is how dangerous 2K urethane is! This stuff absorbs into your body they your eyes, hair follicles and skin. You really should have told your viewer they should be using a good quality full face respiratory and gloves with a long sleeve shirt. I do not like using this stuff when I spray in my home shop and I have the largest Pace spray booth which is a good quality booth. This stuff should not be sprayed in your house. Without a doubt this is an incredible product as far as being durable BUT I think the health risks should be discussed before you tell everyone to use this!

Food for thought... i paint mostly rc cars and almost completely createx paints. What i have started doing is making my own pearls and colorshifts for dirt cheap with exceptional results. I buy 5 gram sample packs of pearl pigments from kp pigments from thier website. 5 grams costs 2.00 to 4.00 a packet and can make about a GALLON. I mix them depending on use with 4030 balancing clear, 5601 transparent base, or the UVLS clears. The colorshifting pigments are amazing. Would love to see a test about it.

You might want to put a big safety warning about Isocyanate clear coats and how potentially lethal they are and that they will get into your body via membranes ( as in you need to have a full face shield with proper filters and fresh air etc) a spray booth isn't gonna do squat against it. Not sure if those 2ks were the non isocyante ones

They're non Isocyanate. I wear a mask. Also spraying small parts for 3 minutes isn't the same as spraying an entire car for an hour. My family business was spray painting for 25 years. Giant spray booths, giant ovens. 50 gallon drums of thinners and acetone. I do know the ins and outs so to speak. I'll do a video of my mask that I prefer soon. Thanks for watching 👍

@@barbatosrex9473 yeah I do goalie helmets, snowboards etc with the good stuff using isocyanates(impact clear) but there's enough stories of people developing issues from small projects. My old man painted cars on side and can no longer stand taste of coffee. Figured I'd bring it up just in case someone goes and gets automotive clear and kills their cat ;)

Thanks for the video. I’m actually painting a car with a large area behind air louvers that is very hard to coat with a normal paint gun. Was looking to see if an airbrush would get in those crevices better, or if 2K clear would even work in the airbrush at all. Thanks!

Thank you so much for this. I know you've talked about 2k clears previously . I am extremely leery on trying things that produce odors when using, mainly because much like you I have parrots. CAG(see my pic)and an Amazon mealy. They do not handle odors and aerosol's to well ,so when I see you using certain products it gives me some ease when using. I also take extra measures in insuring their safety. So I have to ask about the smells(again) that you might have . Again from an avian lover to another....Thank you

My birds are upstairs away from my area. I always take precautions with them. No Fabreze or certain products. I've raised birds for 40 years. This paint is very strong as it's an actual auto paint. But the hobby versions are much less caustic then this. I would go with a brand like splash or Modo if you want to play it safe.

I find that to use polyurethane paints such as these you really need to test it out on a junk plastic part first because some brands of automotive paint actually eats through the plastic despite using model paint thinners like Mr. Hobby. Also I've had issues when spraying certain types of hobby lacquer paint on top of the 2K coating, where it would react strangely to it and ended up ruining the whole paint job. This is the case using Jumpwind colors, I haven't tested it with Mr. Hobby or Tamiya yet. So I really recommend that the 2k coating should be the very last layer to apply.

hi there! informative content!!! I've got some uhs (ultra high solids) 2k clear in my workshop and it is impossible to spray with an airbrush. Too thick. Maximum amount of reducer is 5%. Even with 5% reducer not sprayable. 0.5 needle. when adding more reducer to the paint / hardener mix it is sprayable BUT - less shine afterwards. Huge difference in the gloss. Should I use another 2k clear - not one which says to be an "ultra high solids"?

I happen to have 2 new packs of 2k modo which are past their expiry as indicated on the external package. I tried to use one of it but the texture of the clear coat seems gooey & clumpy even before adding the hardener. By your experience, Is it time to dump em & grab new sets…?

just throwing out an idea, feel free to ignore it. but if you put tape on half of the spoon before you put the clear down you could remove it and show a close up before/after when using it. especially for the black spoons

I would really like to see a new video showing more in-depth the air pressures and needle tests with 2k paints and clear. In this case, spraying thin wet coats with no orange peel, and not filling in corners and details. When I spray clear on masters for mold making it is crucial just to make the surface glossy and glass like, but there are so many variables. It would be a good idea to thin the clear coat because you have to remember the suggestions are geared for 1.2 mm spray guns at 40-60 psi. I spray my clear coat 4:1:4 in my iwata 0.3 at 20-40 psi depending on the application which is usually recessed details. I’m still trying to figure out the best set up to get ZEROA orange peel on the detailed parts. Larger surfaces aren’t as much of a problem because like auto body you can wet sand and polish clear coat peel. But some areas you can’t do spraying right the first time is crucial

For the light mist on the chrome, did you light mist of 2k over alclad black, then spray the chrome over the 2k gloss? Or was it alclad black, chrome then light mists of 2k clear?🤔 Also, did you try mixing food coloring in the 2k clear to make a glossy candy gold color to spray over chrome? It's something I've been meaning to try, but lord knows I can't seem to find the time to experiment these days.

Hey buddy, great to hear from you. It's a standard Alclad Gloss Black Base, then the Alclad Chrome then the 2K Clear. I did a video where I added candy colors to the chrome paint and then applied it over black. It ended up giving me an anodized look which is what I was looking for but I haven't fully tested candy in the clears. I will try it out this week and post a Pic in my community section.

I hear a rumor, you can do the chrome as usual then hit it with a light coat of the water base clear, let it cure over night then go 2k clear over that. I might try this myself, when time permits. I have been on a ever ending quest to get a chrome look that isn't dulled too much by a clear coat. Keep up the great work, this stuff is very information and saves the average person money. I spent a small fortune on paints the last 3 years LOL!

Great video! I'm wondering with the alclad chrome, if you use the aqueous clear and then the 2k if the chrome effect wouldn't change. I've run into the same issue with reflective spray enamels when you clear them they go dull. But I did notice when you did your alclad chrome video that when you used the clear aqueous, that the chrome sheen was unaffected. If that worked it would be great to have that durability and a really shiny chrome.

It's what gordontarpley does. Long story short he documented in the years the process to finding an ideal way to do a really shiny and deep gold finish on his C3PO costume props and found that the best course of action is to spray a varnish like Aquagloss or Liquitex High Gloss between the Alclad and the 2K varnish, the acrylic forms a barrier for the Alclad Chrome, protecting it from the lacquer-melting solvent in the 2K clear

@@statoilbensin2190 Alclad 600 Aqua Gloss (and the Liquitex, but it's not Alclad) is the only one that is water based, the Klear Kotes are lacquers and will react a bit with the high shine metallics (and being a little finicky sometimes). When AG is cured doesn't react with pratically any solvent, unless you dunk the painted piece in acetone.

I feel they are slightly thicker but not so much as to affect the kit. But some hobby brands are close to this meaning they are just repackaged versions of this.

So....Thank you Mr Rex for another fine informative video. I've been thinking about trying some automotive 2K for a while. A few thoughts. I'm sure the smaller model sized 2Ks are just smaller amounts of the automotive 2K. And for the price people paying way too much for the price per volume. You have shown in your other videos you can get a very shiny finish from Acrylic Polyurethanes, so what's the advantage of these 2K clears. You mentioned durability, but 99.9% of the time Gundam/car and other models will be on a shelf or in a display case so there should be no real need for durability. Now that you've tried the 2K are you switching from using Acrylic Polyurethanes. I'm going to get some just to see how it works.

I would use this for my car kits. I have a ton of them and this was actually a cheaper way the clear them. Also, some of my paints, in particular metalizer colors which rub off super easy need a durable coating and that's why I got the satin too

Barbatos - would you flush the airbrush with acetone or lacquer thinner to clean? You mention acetone in the video, but would lacquer thinner work? Why one over the other?

I always finish off my airbrush cleaning with a few drops of acetone. But just lacquer thinner will work just fine.

I think a followup video on this is warranted to talk about the safety aspect of using these types of paints. I noticed you didn't even mention the use of a respirator and gloves, or even the strong smell these give off, making it seem like this is just like any other paint that you can use without much care. Really appreciate the test though, I've been thinking about trying it myself to get a more even finish for chrome on 3d-printed models.

I see you have a spitfier, did not know you did any millitary modelling. Have you ever done afvs? Its my favourite thing to build, paint and wheater. The ones with interior are the most interesting and time consuming.

I prefer modern military aircraft. I think the only prop plane kits I have is an Osprey, a C-46 and a Fokker F27 Friendship. But I've always liked the Spitfire

Yes! I’m actually working on a related project, I want to paint my 3d prints and then hit them with the 2k clear. I got some cheap water based acrylic airbrush paint, some rattle can primer and the 2k clear/hardener from your video. Wondering if I’m going in the right direction or if my choice for the color paint was wrong

This particular brand comes pre thinned. A 0.5mm needle or bigger is a must I would say. You could buy a hobby brand that might work in a smaller needle. Splash Paints might work. I some here but haven't tested it yet. In theory most clears spray better using larger needles.

I got blackridge air brush with 0.5 mm needle , its been good air brush but i have ordered iwata trn2. initially, I was using dulux epoxy enamel paints for metal from bunnings with enamel thinner ,but was getting alot of tip drying and spitting ,then the old guy at paint section gave me brush thinner the second time i went there to get paint. As i told him that i was getting tip drying and spitting. Now its been alot better but i am afraid to use 2k clear as u have to mix clear ,hardner and thinner ,thats why i asked did you use thinner . And sry for so long msg juat one last question . the iwata trn2 is side feed but how does that work i mean i get that smaller cups work like gravity feed but the 30ml bottle ,it that siphon feed?

Acetone. Clean it as soon as your done spraying. The larger the needle the beteer. I will be doing a new video on this soon

Off camera I use gloves and a mask respirator. You should wear both with these paints. I'll show my gloves and mask of choice in an upcoming video
