Don, your channel is the best. Straight up useful info without a lot of fluff. Question -- to get shiny black coat, can I add a bit of mecha gloss varnish to black primer? As an undercoat for metallics, for Necrons. Thank you.

Ah, there is gloss black primer, or you can paint metal varnish after the metallics. Metal varnish are awesome bro. However your idea is good. But I find it not too obvious ( the effect ) in mini painting. Cheers! ☺️

Hi Don! Sorry to comment on an older video, but this is the one that pertains to my question. Could you do a video with placing masking tape over the primer and then removing it? The reason is that (with the shortage of Tamiya fine gray primer) I've been experimenting with different primers and I'm having issues with the primer adhering to the surface. I've tried sanding and washing with soap and with isopropyl alcohol and the different primers are still pulling off the surface. I've tried your method of several thin layer and, it did work better, it still wasn't perfect.

Hi Don, Sorry I have a question too. I always battle to spray grey or white primer over light colours, like yellow, pale green and white plastic. You mention in your book that you use black primer over red plastic and then either go over that with pure white or grey/white primer. Is it a good idea to also used black primer over the light coloured plastic then, prime over that with either grey or white before spraying the colour you want? or should I be doing something else?
@DonSuratos
@DonSuratos 3 года назад
The white and grey primer is hard to see over light colors. You will tend to flood or paint thickly. Pooling along the details is very common. I painted black over red plastic, coz red plastic will see through white and grey primer. Lastly, I always paint black first, coz I always do zenithal priming / undercoat. I suggest you custom mix grey black primer, so that you can easily see the coverage. Then paint grey or white primer over that. Thanks for buying the book! :D

How do the Mecha primers differ from the standard Surface Primer?
@DonSuratos
@DonSuratos 3 года назад
Mecha Primers have a soft satin finish and are more scratch resistant. Mecha Primers have a stronger finish than the Surface primers after letting cure for 24 hours. I highly recommend the Mecha Black primer, before any other primer as base coat. :)

What settings is the hair dryer on and does it affect the paint or primer at all? Adhesion worse or the same as letting it air dry? Never tried using one but seems like a good idea. I plan on buying the set of mecha colors because of watching your videos.

As always great Videos Mate. I have a question. What do you think of Spray Can primers? I've been testing my plastinc spoons with Vallejo Hobby paint, I have a Black and a Gray cans,and TBH, except for the smell, they do work great and cover amazingly on a single coat. Tested For the first time my mecha colors over it with mixed results, but i think the priming worked really good. BTW I tried to use yellow model color on the airbrush and failed misserably XD. I need to learn the propper proportions if Ill ever try again to use them on the Airbrush.

I am trying to use vallejo mecha grey primer, trying being the strong word. It runs on the part A LOT. I spray at 25 psi, 1:2:4 of flow improver, thinner, primer and it runs like crazy, I am using multiple coats trying to building the color little by little but it cover so little it take so much time and it takes me a lot to try cover a piece and I get it splashed all over it. Am I doing something wrong? I'm very light on the trigger but I think this is causing me to spend to much time on a part and overloading it with paint that never seems to stick. Should I pull the trigger more but move faster?
@DonSuratos
@DonSuratos 2 года назад
The White and Grey Primers are a bit tricky to use, I personally always use the black primer. But if you need grey, Mix it with 1 part black and 10 parts grey for easier priming. or thin less. Like 3 parts primer and 1 part thinning sauce. ☺️

This primer for me was rubbish followed mixing instructions, even left it for 4 days to cure masked off some parts i was gonna hand paint. Every part that was masked. Had paint pulled up with the tape. The model had been sanded, washed with detergent and cleaned under freshwater used the air bush to blow out all the excess water and hand dried the pieces and left them for a few hours before painting. So many folk recommended these paints and was really disappointed with the results. I really hate wasting money but I don't think I'll ever use this bottle up. Looks like I'll have to go back to laquer based primer and have the wife on my back about the smell again lol. I will try one last thing with this paint adding future/ pledge as the thinner as another buider suggested he mentioned it adds more strength to it.

I watch most of the videos at 0.25 speed to try and pick up on how much the trigger is moving / how much spray is coming out and even at that slow of speed I can barely make it out 😂 Thank you again for all these videos! This video is one I can easily share with anyone who says they’re having issues with Vallejo paint 😁 If the video wasn’t so fast it would be a 10/10.
