Getting a kick drum sound to sit right in a mix is an issue that many mixers struggle with. Many mixers blend more than one kick sound together to get the right amount of low end thump, mid range punch, and high end cut. But when you start blending samples together phase cancellation is always going to be an obstacle you have to overcome. Bob has a great trick fro getting mixing two kick drums together so that the result is a big punchy kick sound.

Really helpful video, I was running into the same problem. I was able to fix it by adding a slight delay on one of the kicks and then they weren't cancelling each other out anymore.

Good tip .. & now I will check out Bob Horn studio tour .. in the early hours this morning I watched a studio tour from last year with Philip Knight fascinating guy great stories it looked like you had a good time . Another fan of the legend that is Tim pierce. Good stuff .. I did laugh when you were both going .. what was that song ? Stuck in the middle with you .. & I learned a lot too . cheers for now I hope you are having a marvelous time & enjoying the stuff you are working on .

Wouldn't a better solution be to generate the sub from the original recording? You'd avoid any comb filtering this way. Just curious.

hey yo, thank you for giving me a tipp that makes me wanna buy something. Now I'm going to sell my desk to get this plug in that works wonders and no other thing in the world can do.simply there is no other option to get phase aligned layers. And when I do midi I allways more then one sample and blend them to get a good sound ill even keep the one track with all the drums and treat that track like a room mic with all my reverb And comp on I no you can just do buss but I'm from the analog days just like seeing the Ch lol

Could this be one of the many reasons a mic'ed acoustic drum sounds "lively" on a recording? In contrast with drum samples that may correct this issue thus sounding a bit "robotic" and "sterile" overall?

so I just watched the new years / christmas show from Bobs echobar studio shown 2015 . & if you still want to know it was Socrates who was credited with claiming that he knew that he knew nothing for sure . It didn't work out well for him .. but Bob knows a lot . again the dt 100 headphones ..

What if you "detect silence" on the bounced kick so that each kick hit is an event, then time stretched all the events of one kick so that all events have the same length tail? Wouldn't that bring both samples completely in phase all the time?

Recorded differently, with different equipment, different cables. Any piece of gear the sound has to travel through is going to do something, sonically, to its phase slightly, be it harmonic distortion or what have you. I've used plugins that will add just the slightest hint of latency that throws the phase completely off. It isn't like an electronic kick drum generated using a sin wave where its most likely going to be the same shape every time.

Thank you for your answer but i thought that phase issues come from a sound source recorded by two or more mics.So you are saying that two completely different samples that have somewhat similar content like two kicks,can have their phase off here and there?

I saw the waveform,i just dont get why two different samples have phase problems.Its two samples recorded with different mics in different locations.

Every element in a mix is either trying to push or pull the speaker cone(s) at any given moment. Nothing will cause 100 percent cancellation except two pure waveforms of the exact frequency 180 degrees from each other, and at the exact same level, but having two elements of nearly exact frequency, shifted slightly from one another, and playing the same part can definitely cause problems with clarity and frequency response. It's not an all or nothing thing, but a degree of better/worse. Hope that makes sense.
