How to Animate a character JUMPING for an INDIE GAME.
Make a JUMP animation using photoshop that can be used in a video game such as an indie game. Specifically this is really easy to do in photoshop and there are some tips that can help you to get better at animating if you follow some of these same methods.
Games I've worked on -
Fortnite (Environment concept art)
Overwatch (Environment concept art + Sprays artwork)
League of Legends (Character design + Environment concept art, UI + Icons)
Diablo 3 (Character design + Environment concept art)
Hearthstone (Illustration)
Burning Crusade(Character design + Environment concept art)
Wrath of the Lich King (Character design + Environment concept art)
Indivisible (Environment concept art)
Final Fight Streetwise (Voice Acting + Character Design + World Design + Cutscene Direction + Co writer on script)
He Man GBA (Pixel Art)
Terminator 3 GBA (Art Direction + Pixel Art)
CannonBallers (Character + World design)
Ikeda: The Scrap Hunter (Programming + Art + Design)
Goblins and Gnomes (Concept Art)

Wow, just in time. I was thinking on making my own 2d game with unreal engine myself and Trent came up with AMAZING animation tutorial. Crazy motivation and inspiration. This happens the 2nd time. 6 month ago I watched Trent’s video about what it takes to be a concept artist. I’ve never heard of it and my reaction was hell yes, seems so interesting. Trent’s videos, wisdom and actions, that inspire me changed my life. Thank you ❤

Small suggestion to further improve your animation, add 1 - 2 frames of anticipation before the jump (build up / crouch) and repeat for follow through on landing. It will still react instantly on button press and feel more dynamic.

that won't work because the character must jump instantly for gameplay purposes in movies or shows what you said would be necessary

This was really eye opening. You’ve Inspired me to start adapting my animated series into a video game! Idk much about how to create a game so any insight you can give like unreal engine/coding/how to transfer your animation into a game, is super helpful! One love!

Hi, there are plenty videos about it on the web. My recommendation is to peek a simple game engine with relatively low entering point. To me, unreal engine was incredibly overcomplicated, even though i already had experience with unity and c++. At some point - I was even traumatized by it😂. It took me a year(with some breaks) to learn it to the level I can now use it without that much frustration. When I started - I was scary to even change some parameters in the editors. Drawbacks of unreal engine are: -documentation is not that good. To understand how things work you need to search manually source code of the engine itself. You need to know c++ pretty good. Actual documentation is there) -to start developing you need to operate within unreal’s class hierarchy. If you don’t know oop(object oriented programming) it may be quite hard at the beginning. If we take unity, for example - everything is gameobject. And you can put gameobjects everywhere - on the scene and inside each other. Unity: Unity is like a handicapped skeleton, where there is minimum things and often you need to search for external solutions. Also it has some tools for 2d. You can make crapy games with crapy code and you are good. I liked online documentation. It is very good with examples and use cases. Though source code is closed and you can’t look in it yourself. But for me, I would rather know how things work from inside. On the other hand, unreal is a hell of a beast with everything you need and learning curve is very complicated for the beginners. If you are beginning - try to avoid things that you don’t need. IMHO, unity is much friendlier to the beginner. Maybe try godot, but i’ve never used it. Also there are plenty of solutions for codeless game engines. I wish you luck on this journey😊

11:10 idk how it came to be but this has been my ongoing process with drawing and learning 2D art. I call it "iterative formation" where I've identified that the lines I need are somewhere in the silhouette blob. Just remove the excess junk and you have the isolated form you need!

Thank you for the tutorial. One thing that I would like to know is, what's the resolution you used for the animation. Is it 250px X 250 px and what is the DPI

You probably already know but just in case, if you're going to be doing 2D in Unreal Engine, make sure to learn and use PaperZD (free add on.) It makes life so much better with 2D in UE.

I wish your character looked as cool as your thumbnail on Steam. Is it because it would be harder to animate? Right now it's the only boring art i've seen in game.
