Welcome to another Shotcut tutorial. One of the most popular cinematic transition is speed ramping. Unfortunately, it is not yet available on Shotcut, but fear not. I found a workaround to creating a speed ramp transition on Shotcut.
Let me know if there's something specific you want to learn about Shotcut transitions in the comments and I'll make a tutorial video. Hopefully, I can help you learn Shotcut.
I hope this tip video inspires you to go play around on Shotcut and make awesome videos!

Really cool and helpful, once again you have produced a gem! I wanted to point out one little "slip". The last two digits on the timeline represent "frames" and not "milliseconds". So, if your video is at 25fps then the last digits will spin up to 24 and then the second goes up one and the frames zero out.

Excellent tutorial. I love the result. Very cool transition. About the bug that adds a frame when speeding up a clip. I'm thinking that maybe it has something to do with the framerate. I don't know what video mode you chose for this project, but I see the videos are at 23,976024 fps. Not knowing how Shotcut does it's math when speeding up a clip, I can only guess that maybe it ends up with an in-between value that forces it to add a frame. So in your example, 2 seconds @ 23,976024 fps = 191,808192 frames. When you speed that up 16 times, it ends up with 2,997003 frames. That doesn't fit in the timeline so I suppose Shotcut needs to compensate in some way. Just guessing here but if the videos and video mode was at, say, 30 fps and you chose multiples of 10 when speeding up, maybe it would be OK. Something like: Clip 1 : 1 seconds (30 frames) speeded up 10 times you end up with exactly 3 frames. Clip 2 : 2 seconds (60 frames) speeded up 20 times you end up with exactly 3 frames. Clip 3 : 4 seconds (120 frames) speeded up 30 times you end up with exactly 4 frames. Anyways, I may be totally wrong with my theory (wouldn't be the first time), but you're right, it's wort mentioning this "issue" (not always prudent to call it a bug) to the developers.

Love your tutorials! I have an idea about the extra frame problem. When you add, say 4 seconds, you are moving to a point 4 x 23.976024 frames to the right of where you started. Even if you started at a point that was between 2 frames, the end point will not be between two frames. I think the frame is perhaps being added to fix a "rounding error". Just a guess.

Hey Ben, I used your technique in the editing of this video a few times and it always worked out great. No added frames. Only one of the speed ramp made it into the video as I was taxing to the runway. I was filming in 30fps and is actually 29.9 or something. So I set Shotcut to the 29. And not the auto or 30fps. So not sure if that is the issue but I will make sure I check the clips for the added frames just to make sure. Thanks again and hope you like the video if you get a chance to watch it. hey Ben I have Question .. whenever I want to slaw down a clip it overwrites the next clip .. it wasn't like that at first but not sure what is the problem another Question lets say I zoom in a clip and I want to cut it in the middle some times the 2 mini clips stay as is zooming in sometimes when I split the clip the first part stays (Zoom mood) while the next part goes back to the original like it was before zooming in ..... why ?
@BenEspanto
@BenEspanto 3 года назад
When you slow a clip down it makes the clip longer. If you have a clip immediately after that, it will overwrite. Make sure there's space between the slowed down clip and the next one. The zoom (keyframe) only applies to one clip when you apply filters directly on the clip. Try applying the zoom filter on the track instead to apply it to all the clips on that track

There is a filter called time remapping that can accomplish it if you master it. It's a little clunky for me, but it can theoretically do it

Can you teach how to get a smooth slow motion by decreasing the speed from properties?
@BenEspanto
@BenEspanto 3 года назад
It's almost the same thing except reverse. I would gradually, set the speed all the way down to (.4x)
@fruitpunch4338
@fruitpunch4338 3 года назад
@@BenEspanto So, if a video is 60 fps then the slow motion would be at 24 fps, then it would be smooth if exported in 24 fps?
@BenEspanto
@BenEspanto 3 года назад
@@fruitpunch4338 On a 24 fps timeline, you can only slow down a video originally recorded at 60 fps down to a setting of (0.4) speed. 60 X .4 = 24 fps

So chop it up and increase the speed on each bit. Wish there was simple, smooth way of doing it.

Nope. At this point we have to do it manually.

Cool technique! Summary: 1. Have the two clips next to each other in the Timeline. The transition will transform the last 7 seconds of the first clip into 3/8s, and the first 7 seconds of the second clip into 3/8s, for a total transition time of 6/8s. 2. Seek to the end of the first clip. 3. Seek back 4 seconds, and split. Set the speed of this 4s clip to 32x. 4. Seek 2 more seconds back, and split. Set the speed to 16x. 5. Seek 1 more second back, and split. Set the speed to 8x. 6. Repeat steps 3, 4, 5 in reverse order for the second clip. I.e. Split at 4, 2 and 1 seconds, and set the speeds to 32x, 16x, 8x. 7. Remove the blank spaces between the clips. Note that each of the ramp sections lasts for 1/8 seconds: 1s @ 8x, 2s @ 16x, 4s @ 32x

It's most likely not a bug, it's just an adjustment based on the number of frames

Although this may be a progressive video format, I came across a video where some talked about interlacing. It had to do with field order. He modified how it extracted the frames. I'll try and find the video. His fix resulted in a smooth play back without strange jitters (judders). Found it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sn_TDa9zY1c.html Listen beginning at 15:50. This may be the issue or not the issue at all, or maybe it will provide insight to some other video handling.

so is speed ramping a thing yet? I do craft videos and no one wants to watch me paint for 20 minutes however they want to see I painted the whole thing quickly lol! I know In Canva you can speed the video clips up on another site would that be faster for shotcut as well
@BenEspanto
@BenEspanto 2 года назад
You can easily speed things up in Shotcut using properties, but it's just the gradual speeding up with speed ramping that's a pain

No keyframes? Interesting. Still. What is a 'key frame"? You're still picking a frame and unlocking a feature starting with that frame.
