Hello my friend Chris, Thank you for showing melamine edge banding application in woodworking. Good job. Congratulations. See you. Great greetings. Warm hug. Stay healthy and happy.
Look at the size of that pile! You weren't kidding... and here I am procrastinating over a few drawers ;) Good luck mate, can't wait to see the final build installed.
That's the small pile, there's a bigger one behind me. There's no video for this build otherwise it would have taken me 10 times as long. I'll post a few pictures when it's done. Cheers mate.
Thanks brother. Saved me a fortune. Was building some massive cabinets in the garage and they wanted to charge me $3800 for 10 doors. melamine with a banding is my answer thanks again
G'day Chris, thanks for this upload, I recently helped my son by doing some edge banding as I did in my own home years ago. I would have appreciated those two handy dandy edge tools though! I used edge banding in a different way when someone asked me to make a sign for a factory. I chose a straight edge letter font and made a white letter out of black background and it is ok today three decades later I believe! A steel hole punch will work with it too allowing adhesve circles to be made - I needed to do that but such is my memory I cannot remember what I used them for! :) Another use has been for jigs when an easy accurate slide is needed. You probably know and do all this and more anyhow but that is my experience. I could never be bored by one of your videos Chris, liked the bit of fun at the end. Take care and keep well mate, Eryk 👍🔨👍🔨😀
G'day Eryk. Glad you enjoyed the video. Those handy dandy tools sure make a difference. I'm sure your sign will last long after we're both gone. Are you sure you weren't just a little bored, because I even bored myself a little. Look after yourself Eryk. Catch ya next time.
@@BuiltByChris Not bored Chris because watching you I think of all the things I could do using ideas based on what you are presenting. For instance a project board with some edgebanding like a picture frame would stop things rolling off the edge. I also thought about heating glued edge each side of thin strips of wood to make spacers for bookbinding. Nope, no boredom Chris, plus with yours and Dirk's distinctive characters the fun is just below the surface even when you are being professional. Thanks again for inspiring ideas. Just one more; how about gluing a strip of edge banding to a tape measure for a partialy flexible ruler for difficult measuring circumstances or along the side edge of a workbench? Keep safe :)
In my experience i wouldn't sand the new edging the way you do, i would expect that to sand the entire banding as well as the sides. I always used a block and arrised the edges gently. But we all have our way of doing things. I used to use liquid white out to repair the small chips on the edges but there is a product that is designed for use on Melamine called Mend Paint and a little dab'll do ya! Cheers, great to someone else doing what i did for years.
Thanks for the advice Michael. I gave your method a go, and you're right. It worked well. I always take advice on board. I've been using Mend Paint for a while now and it's great stuff. Thanks for watching and I really appreciate the advice. Cheers mate.
Practical tip mate, this is something that not everyone does & I’ve been educated to how it works although it feels like I witnessed this in livestream 🧐😳. Ok carry on old boy & tally ho 🇦🇺🍻👍
Hi Chris, just looking at needing to do some edge banding on melamine and found your video brilliant. Please could you give me some more details about the two handy tools you have as to what brand they are please. I live in the UK so hopefully I should be able to get the same brand or a equivalent. Thanks again Anthony
Hi Anthony, glad I could help. Try this link, these are the tools that I use. www.amazon.com.au/Trimmer-Woodworking-Trimming-Carpenter-Hardware/dp/B07CH1C97Z/ref=sr_1_3_sspa?crid=1G5U0ZGE0EYBW&keywords=edgebanding&qid=1663593949&sprefix=edgebanding%2Caps%2C246&sr=8-3-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFaWVREMk9BVDVVVTgmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA1NjAxODIzUVE2R0gzOVhERkwxJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QUVEVDJVVTVUR0pXUyZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=
Simple video, but just what I wanted to know. I don't work with melamine a lot, and usually when I do it's framed out, but I'm building a work table tonight, and have to band the edges, since a wood frame wouldn't be tolerant to the uses of the table.
Hi Ben, I would definitely use solid timber edging for a work table. The melamine edging is just ironed on and I believe it won't stand the rigours of a work table.
@@BuiltByChris hey mate. As soon as i touch the iron on the edging it starts to stick. I assumed it was the iron being too hot. No biggie. I just use baking paper. Thanks thou for your quick response. Btw. Love your scrap wood challenge entry.
Did the edge already have a melamine cover? Does this method also work on bare particle board edges after cutting the melamine sheets? Thank you, loved the way you presented the tips!
If you want to edge band all around your piece (or at least 3 sides) do you do it with 1 single strip of edge band or you make 3 strips, one for each side ? Thank you
hahaha 64k, man that's one huge wardrobe!🤣 What did the trimming tools set you back, mate? 🤔 Oh, and thanks for thinking of us, even if it was like watching paint dry! 👍🏾😉😆
Thanks Bill, yeah mate, it's a bit of a monster. Kind of regretting taking it on. I paid about $90 for both those tools. They make life easier, I can tell you. I hope I didn't bore you too much mate. lol
@@BuiltByChris Cheers for that mate, appreciate it. Never boring, always entertainment in one form or another on your channel, love it.👌🏾 Good job, Chris.👍🏾
I never realized how easy edge banding was. I thought there was some mysterious fenagling involved, with expensive mechanical wizardry required. But nuh ! It's just an 'iron on sticker'!!.
@@rohitgulyani3696 That 150 mtres will probably last me anywhere from 9 months to a year. I don't really use that much, and I'm slowly moving away from making these cabinets.
