How to prepare concrete for epoxy (polycuramine) coating for 2021 formulation of Rustoleum Rocksolid for my dream 4-car garage. Rocksolid changed up the mix and components compared to pre-2021 videos. There is no more metallic mix to deal with, its all self contained in the burst packs.
This is for the silver bullet metallic gloss coating with marbleized look. I ended up using 12 kits plus two kits of clear topcoat for this dream garage floor.
Here is the list of products/supplies needed:
Rocksolid Metallic Silver Bullet 2-Pack Kits: amzn.to/2Q9V2EX

Rubber Squeegee: amzn.to/3tJVrLX
Acetone: amzn.to/3tFRV5B
Paint Mixer: amzn.to/3fawap1
Misc:

Thanks for the sharing! Wish I had watched your video before I did my garage flooring. We ran out of paint mid way, now paint on some areas is rather thin. Worst yet, 25% of our garage is not painted. Now trying to get the kit again and will finish up the remaining 25% later. Your sharing covers important things to note, and is very helpful. Looking forward to more projects / sharing!

I installed a crankcase vent filter on my 07 IS250 and noticed that the fuel trims immediately shot up to 20%. Did your fuel trims shoot up as a result of your crankcase vent filter? I have the other end that the hose would typically go into the intake tubing closed off and airtight so im not sure why my fuel trims shoot up so much after installing a crank case vent filter. I used the KN 62-1560

Nice garage! With rollers we wrap masking tape around the roller like a mummy lol (leave an edge at the end) while the roller is on the stick you grab the edge you left and pull it fast to unravel the masking tape. That should help with fuzzys in the rollers, just do as many times as you see fit. No matter the brand all rollers will be a bit fuzzy🤠👍🏽

Good tip, my de-lint was a light tape pull, didn’t think of full wrap and unwrap of tape.

Looks great. How did you get the “moon” look? Did you just spray on after you rolled or did you spray and roll together?
@TunerwithKids

Roll it then spray to disperse the metallics.

What do you do about the little pebbles between the concrete slabs? Do you fish them all out?
@TunerwithKids
@TunerwithKids 2 года назад
Can’t really do anything about it. Unless you can vacuum and get every spec of dust out it will always be there. On older coatings with the flake, it’s hard to notice but on this smooth shiny stuff, it is inevitable.

I’ve used this product in my salon in different areas before. I never used the spike shoes. Do you think they helped? Did they leave marks? I love this product because it adheres to different surfaces. After ripping up carpet I was left tons of glue and some areas have tile some have concrete. What would you use to get glue up? Although, once sanded flat, the epoxy adheres to it just fine.
@TunerwithKids
@TunerwithKids 2 года назад
spike shoes help you work over areas already coated, to ensure even coverage. The epoxy just eventually flows over the holes as it cures/settles. For any concrete, I would recommend a big ass floor grinder rental, it guarantees proper prep and all crap removed, you can also skip etching if you grind. If I did this again, I would rent a grinder and skip the etch. A grinder with vacuum/dust collect is needed to minimize mess. Only thing is making sure you get all dust cleared before coating.

@@TunerwithKids I actually did a giant grinder with Vacuum in my main salon and hallway the glue was so bad I has to go over it. I was going to just polish the concrete but with the glue epoxy was recommended by a friend that does this type of work since it adheres to everything. It’s been 4 years. Holding up well. I have more smaller areas to do. The floor has uneven areas and at least the glue levels it out. I’m just going to sand it flat. Definitely going to get spike shoes too.
@TunerwithKids
@TunerwithKids 2 года назад
Yea if glue is adhered and you can scuff it, the epoxy coating will do fine.

Looks really good! I think I’m going to copy this exact concept. I’m not a fan of the paint chips that come in most epoxy kits, but I’m worried about even coating of the solid color, so I think the acetone trick is perfect to show that effect is intended. How much of the 8oz acetone did you use? Also, did you just lightly mist some right after applying the epoxy or did you spray a fairly good amount?
@TunerwithKids
@TunerwithKids 3 года назад
I only filled my 32 bottle like half or less. But I had 850 SF to do. I would recommend misting it about 3 ft high and letting it drop right after you finish a section. It dries fast and lets the epoxy flow out. The alcohol dries slower and when I sprayed it late (after 20 minutes) it created the craters that didn’t flow back fast enough cause it was already hardening.
@TunerwithKids
@TunerwithKids 3 года назад
Also, I’m questioning if I should have grinded the floor after doing it. If you want to be 100% about adhesion, maybe renting a grinder with diamond pad and vacuum will be the best prep. You can skip the etch using that method. But my old epoxy with flake floors have lasted 9 years with zero lifting or pickup issues.

@@TunerwithKids The house is a brand new build so it’s completely fresh concrete - I’m hoping that will allow me to use the provided etch without any issues
@TunerwithKids
@TunerwithKids 3 года назад
You want to let it dry for at least 30 days which it probably will since it takes more than 30 to build the home. The thing I’m worried about is the veneer coat that they sometimes do when the floor isn’t as smooth as the builder likes it. But it’s at mercy of the quality of the floor.
@P_Weave
@P_Weave 3 года назад
@@TunerwithKids that’s a REALLY good point. I didn’t think about that. I’m definitely going to ask the builder about that.

How is the garage holding up after how much time has it been?
@TunerwithKids
@TunerwithKids Год назад
It’s been 15 months. I got lifting near the entry last year. Moisture and water bubbled up in two spots. I got it warrantied (new kit and small clear) but haven’t had a chance to cut out the sections or do the repair in the spot. The rest of the floor is good, but signs of wear though. It was obvious from beginning I knew that with the shiny finish.

Man it would've been so helpful if you talked more about the acetone and isopropyl alcohol mixture ratio and how you sprayed.
@TunerwithKids
@TunerwithKids 2 года назад
I just sprayed it straight (90% IPA) using the sprayers from HD or Lowes. For acetone I got the Zepp Pro bottles in case the plastics in the cheaper bottles might melt. Just mist it and let is settle. Don’t over due it cause it flows out and evaporates to give you effects
@Rahmi1103
@Rahmi1103 2 года назад
So you sprayed the 90% isopropyl and then sprayed the acetone in a separate bottle? So 2 separate applications but simultaneously basically?
@TunerwithKids
@TunerwithKids 2 года назад
Two separate bottles. Each gives different effects. Acetone gives craters. Alcohol gives flowing streaks.

After a year has passed, how is the floor holding up?
@TunerwithKids
@TunerwithKids 2 года назад
I got some bubbling near the edge/door. I think the prep needed to be better there. Like grind the concrete. I also put a thick layer on. It got water under during heave rain last June. Rust oleum paid for a new kit and sent me clear to fix. Otherwise, normal wear and tear at the door due to high foot traffic. Kids keep dragging their toy vehicles on it and causing scratches (as expected).

Can I fill in the concrete slits to make it even and flat throughout?

You can but not recommended. They are for expansion between seasons. You can fill with a flexible epoxy but coating may crack over time.
@dc6233

No, those are control joints, do not fill them with any epoxy or Polycuramine or your floor will crack somewhere else...

Bruh, I just bought the same stuff with the same idea.....came to RU-vid to search for a video to see if anyone else did it so I can get tips, and voila...thanks for the video. You guys did excellent and I love the work you did. I love your acetone idea. I'm gonna do that as well. So, did you say just use acetone, no need for the alcohol? And what technique did you use to make the marble affect with the acetone?? It looks excellent bud!👍👏✌👌 And, I believe the rough texture as an anti-skid is 100% meant to be. That's how I want it. I was saying "that's perfect! It's perfect, dude!" the entire time you were pointing out the final results. Lol
@TunerwithKids
@TunerwithKids Год назад
The alcohol and acetone do the same effects. Alcohol produces a longer running streak vs acetone since acetone evaporates very fast. Acetone probably does the craters more than streaks. Random action of the roller creates the marble texture look. The rough texture is definitely the dust balls off the rollers. I should have cycled more rollers but it’s hard and messy to do when your in the work flow. I used like 2 or 3 for the 12 kits. Should have used one for each kit to keep it dust free but oh well, inadvertent anti skid. I never use the anti skid powder. I’ve got like 6 bags from all the other garages I’ve done.
