Hey Chris!!! Thx for all the tips!!! I live in Hong Kong and it was the Chinese New Year festival so a bunch of relatives came over to eat. I did the 2 minute stand on toilet thing, the "I'm in charge" thing, the finger squeeze.... and I absolutely NAILED it. This video really helped me a lot. Thx so much!!! Oh and when will you "make" a new deck? Cuz I love your deck designs.
Thank you for this Tipps i Think they are very helpful :) and I also thinking that them will help me on my way to fell much more comfortable in performance
Things that make me confident when I perform: 1. Good outfit. When you feel good about your looks, you just seem a better entertainer from audiences perspective. 2. Great tricks. I know tricks that work best for me and I only not know how to do them but I also know how to perform them. 3. Showing off. Do flourishes and suffle a deck or just play with rubber bands etc. Makes you seem more mysterious. They may even ask if you're magician. Be bold and flashy. 4. Knowing your environment. I usually perform on a local mall or cafe. Those are places where I hang out with my friends and they make me relaxed. 5. Nice crowd. My audience is usually either my friends or random-ish people who are like my friends friends friends or something like that. Connect and ask names. Look into their eyes. I've been practicing for 1,5 years now and I start to feel good about my performances. Chris' videos have been a great help
The 3rd one works really good I did it once and people just came up to me asking if I was a magician and then I showed them a trick and blew their mind even though it was a simple trick
Chris, I've watched videos about approach anxiety before and all I've ever seen in those videos were people telling me to just be more confident. I never felt satisfied with those videos but in this video is giving me the bump in courage I needed to take to take my finesse to streets! Thanks for amazing content as always.
thanks so much for making this kind of videos, its nice to see your expiriences to help us to get better in magic, or more important, life in general. love from venezuela chris, big fan
I have tried to explain this to some friends many times but they just can't keep it in their head when it comes time to not cave in or back down or etc.. idk how or why but I used to be extremely shy as a kid and teenager but then idk what happened but I started realizing exactly what you were saying about how others follow the leader and it has pushed me very far in my life, it's not having to be the biggest chest in the room but a simple acknowledgment that I'm not one who folds or is just going to blindly get in line and follow because I have a brain and I try to keep it sharp. It's sort of crazy just how dull the world has let their brains become and I cant help but feel that it really shifted when everyone got online everyday and saw others supposedly doing better than everyone else. When in reality a lot of those people's lives are way more crap and twisted then the people who feel belittle from seeing those posts. Always tell yourself that no matter how bad you think it is, it's really not a big deal in the grand scheme of things and that there are way, way, worse things that could happen than someone saying they don't have time to see a trick or they were floored by your magic ❤❤❤
Same, but the worse thing is that it happened on the FIRST freakin' day of class and the one that confiscated it is not a teacher but the freakin' PRINCIPAL!!! DAmn straight!!! After that day I live with humiliation until the very last day of class but now I think the whole class had forgot it by now... *P.S. It happened on my 3rd year of highschool :(
I perform magic for my friends on a daily basis, even though cards ain't allowed, I always create magic and see if the effect has a good response. Anyway, WHY ON THE TEACHER. lmao
This video and this channel brought me from that kid who knows a cheesy card trick to a pursuer of the Art of sleight of hand and card manipulation. I still have a long way to go but I've never been so passionate about something, I only wish I found it earlier in my life. Thanks Chris!
Spot on! I'm a Hypno-Therapist, among other things, NLP is something I use ALL the time. Not to control people as much as for clear and simple communication. I got over stranger anxiety by taking the mental attitude of having something important to impart, something someone else needs to know. It usually takes the form of a sincere compliment to break the ice. You've done a great job Chris!😎
I haven't ever really had problems with performing for people but a few of these tips I feel like could still help me so I'll make sure to keep them in mind next time I perform for someone.
This was an awesome video and it was really helpful! One thing to add though, when you are apeaking to a person or a group, dont speak from your throat and mouth, use your chest and gut instead, it really helps me whenever I am performing for someone
i like how people comment "first" even before they could have possible ever finished watching the video first. do you think they even watch the video after commenting? anyway... non hat wearing nerdy Chris is as on par as ever... good job bro.. amazing
I totally agree with what you say man 👍, i still suffer the magic shakes lol, but one thing i can say is, don't be afraid of failure, because failure is a part of learning magic, the more you fail the more youl get comfortable with messing up, youl be able to fix it over time youl have to understand failure to overcome this, remember if you mess up just act like (DOH) so the audience think this was ment to happen use this to your advantage and work your way around it make a little comedy out of it, 1 tip I've learned is go to pubs where people are drunk, it has dark lighting, because these people probably won't remember you the next day lol, so this is easier on your mind mentally 👍
Chris, once again you show me how its done man. Thanks to you I was able to establish myself as a person at a restaurant yesterday when I brought my family and friends. I did every single thing u said and I got caught int hr bathroom standing on the toilet by some random guy but it all worked out and eventually people started asking me to do more and more. Keep up the amazing work man. Oh and nice hat👌👍
hey chris, could you make a video sometime about all the different types of card stocks and card finishes? i know many people are interested in eventually producing a unique deck of theirs but the differences between all the types of cards are not clear. if you know a place where we can find answers that would be great too. most places ive checked are either incomplete or too indetailed/vague to provide enough value. thanks!
What a great and inspiring video! It actually helped me not only perform the same day, but actually socialize easier. Here is an idea, make a video of Chris (the awkward version) perform magic for people in the street with a camera that isn't visible by the audience... That way, he will be like the average new magician and I personally thing that will motivate many people to actually try and perform for strangers.
This is AWESOME! You mix acting as the 'rookie magician' (which is hilarious) and you give out good tips. I love how you incorporated that! This was surprisingly helpful, and I hope you do more!
Hey Chris thanks for this vid. It helped me a lot. I preform magic around local bars in my area and I never wanted to walk up to strangers. With your tips, I dragged my buddy with me one night and started standing straight and I must have preformed to 30+ that night. Wasn't the greatest tricks I've done but it was a start. Thanks man.
Great tips! Realy best tutorial for begginers. Not tricks or cardistry but how to aproach people. For many and me personaly this is the hardest part. Thanks for that. Oh and amateur Chris is awesome. You have some acting talent. You guys are like Clark Kent and Superman :) Keep up the great work!
usually everytime i try to do a magic trick to my family or friends i start shaking for no reason but hopefully with this tips might help me to overcome my fears thanks Chris
awesome tips! I watch all your vidoes. I'm known around my college as the magic man, people come up to me and ask to see tricks! also you have the best deck collection! totally jealous
Thanks so much Chris, i have always wanted to preform street magic but ive been a bit nervous up to now. However, i really feel like going out and giving those tips a try.
Chris, this is the most useful video I've seen so far. I'm a young magician and I have never performed for some strangers, I think I'll start thanks to your tips. Thank you!
I'm not sure if anyone has added this bit, but smiling goes a long way. I worked in retail and sales and I'm currently going to business school and something that I took from my classes and work is that you feel a lot happier and more relaxed when you smile, even if it's just for a few seconds. It can completely change the way you carry yourself almost instantly and you'll instantly be more approachable to other people.
Man, i just love the way you present your stuff. How you creat a persona or a character to show a point or give exemples, it is funny it is awesome. Love your work, i'm aways been spired by your videos, your uncommon aproach of things (good stuff) and i hope that maybe one day i will find my own way/style into magic just like you did...but for me oc... haha Keep up the great work! :)
Was going back and watching some old videos and this actually really helped! I'm currently in a public speaking competition for school and I couldn't have seen this at a better time!
Thanks, Chris! I've been waiting to hear what you had to say about approach anxiety. I have social phobia but have been practicing card magic for about two years. I've performed for all of my friends and family but just can't get over my fear of others. I've decided to have my next "performance" be at work. There's about 10 people in my office and they know I work with cards. The moment I pull out a deck, I know I'm going to have a bigger audience than I've ever had. So I've been pretty nervous about it - and I know these people. I'm going to take all of your tips seriously - I may even try a stranger before I try it at work... if I can summon the stones to do it. Anyway, thanks again! Love your work, I'm a big fan.
Hey dude I just wanted to add something. If you go to a social event i.e. Bar, restaurant, party etc... always look the part, because if you look like a hobo at a restaurant no one will feel comfortable or might even want you near them so say if you go to a bar just wear something like casual clothes (e.g. Jeans and tshirt), restaurant suit or nice clothes just look the part so that you can fit in and people will feel comfortable
Thanks for the tips, I actually was able to get out and do some magic at an informal event hosted by my girlfriend's company. It was a huge hit, and they asked me to do walk around at their spring auction!
This is great advice for any human! Love it, life skills. I don't watch your vids for puzzle solving and magic alone.. you have something special upstairs and I do thank you for sharing what you've learned. Ha.. keep calm and solve a puzzle! Great channel!
an other advantage for having the "wingman". When I go out with my friend in a social event, I don't always feel like going up to people and aks them if they want a magic trick, it sometimes feel rude, so I just practice a few movd on him and people seing this and are interested come up to me to ask " oh, do you do magic?" so it become easier to say "sure! would you like a trick?" :) ..thank you for the videos, helpfull and inspiring :)
6:48 made me feel very positive although I don't have the anxiety issues. To approach people in the streets I start by doing a shake change up in the air then a cardini change down to the ground so I gain their attention then I tell them I want to show you a trick and 100% of them agree cuz you 've amazed them at the beginning and after a while you will gain confidence and nothing will matter if they reject you do as Chris did in the last vid he said i am denied and had a big smile in his face cuz it doesn't matter he knows what he can do. I hope this helps you.
One small gripe: we as magicians often make the error (in my opinion) of assuming implicitly that magic is for kids, hence the "it's for my nephew" line. I would change that to parents anniversary or some other adult event because I think we do ourselves a disservice when we present our art as if it were best suited to kids.
I really enjoy your videos. your sense of humor is really funny, you know you're making fun of yourself, and it's pretty great. wonderful entertainment again Chris. I also want you to know that these tips help me in my current job working in retail. keep up the great work man!
@chrisramsay ...you explain things so very beautifully.i have actually forwarded this video to many people i know ,not jst for magic but even for a normal person. These things actually do build up confidence and i have tried these in front of quite a lot of people. Thanks a ton for this video and the tips that you taught me
Hey Chris very nice video. You know I don't see a lot of these kinds of videos (that and presentation/showmanship stuff) I very much appreciate it thanks! I would like to add one thing....you also got 3 sec to approach when you have "locked on to a target" -the person smiling and full of energy haha- if you don't you will never approach. You will be consumed by the natural processes of our bodies, the anxiety could overwhelm you and you will be left standing there smelling up the room with anxiety :0 ...3 seconds is all it takes to become overwhelmed, and to give off a creepy vibe haha. Short circuit that with an instant approach as soon as you have located the "target," so you won't over think it and end up lookin like a creep haha. Aaaaand don't forget to just have fun! Approach instantly. Be witty. Show vulnerability. And be relaxed. ;) (I hope this helps at least one person out there because that's what I wish I knew years ago!!)
Funny story, my leadership class in hs, which I'm going to an event for in 5 minutes (ironically), has a teacher and before I was in the program, I was doing a magic show for an event and the teacher said to do a power pose. I wasn't nervous (I barely get nervous anymore), but it's so funny that I see this video as I'm going to work with that teacher.
Chris your tips are so helpful I was in my local talent show I was doing card magic for my whole school I'm in middle school it was like 900 to 1000 people and I ended up winning the talent show you are a big inspiration to keep doing what you do my name is Isaac piece
today, i tried to cancel my gym membership. I go into the gym. I talk to the guy behind the desk. "Hi, I want to cancel my gym membership." guy says " well, actually the membership is a year long contract. do you want to talk to my manager?" me "no... it oka..." leave. goddammit i needed this
I am a prey to this whole anxiety thing... i am learning magic about 4 months now....and am quite capable doing magic.. but till now i have shown my magic only once.. i just lack tht thing that makes u approach.. .am very introvert.. but am super addicted to magic... this whole thing makes me frustated.. to say the least....this video was good though..
Thanks I've been waiting for a video on this topic for a while. Once people know you do magoc they will ask you tobshow yhat trick over and over. But you can't repeat a trick unless yoir showing it to someone else. Soon you have a ceowd of people watching you perform your favorite trick! 😎😎😎
This def helped a little. I still am not very good at some tricks/routines and have tested them out on my girlfriend who will call me out if she notices something funny or out of place. Ive been using her to practice on. ^_^ Thanks for the good tips.
I've recently gotten back to cardistry and magic and your videos are really helping out. I have regional workshop in a couple of days and plan to try some of these tips out. Thank you for the advice
Hey chris your my favorite youtuber cause cinematography and magic are two things i really like . Could you make a video about your video gear and process of making your video. Mabey with peter mckinnon?👌🏻
