If you are starting out and hear him say that you need to do everything right and just showing up to your workout is the bare minimum: Please know that it's okay to improve slowly. You don't have to do everything right the minute you start something new. We all learn as we go, from experience and advice. We get better as we go along and find challenges more enjoyable. Don't put too much pressure on yourself starting out because starting is the hardest part!

I agree. Showing up and giving it your all is still discipline even if you miss times or need to adapt the workout.

100%! For most people Showing up and getting it done is definitely enough. Once you get a bit more competitive then sure what he said makes sense. But for most, discipline is getting out of bed and getting it done.

So the 5 yr old was up all night with a cough. The 3 yr old didn’t fall asleep until midnight. And the 1 yr old didn’t sleep through the night as per her usual. But I got up at 4:45am to do my workout cuz that’s mom’s only time to do it. It wasn’t my most amazing workout ever but I got it done. But according to you, “showing up is the bare minimum”. Thanks for that. Very encouraging outlook. Guess we’ll just have to have our own definitions of discipline 😬

Hey man, I really really like your stuff, but I gotta say I really don't agree with what you said at 6:00. For a whole lot of people, just showing up is discipline. For a lot of people, the mentality that you have to be 100% from the time you wake up until you go to bed is the thing that really hinders their progress and ability to grow. A lot of people aren't where you are, and the baby steps they take isn't the "bare minimum", but a whole world of dedication and hard work. I really hope you get to read this message. I think it is really important for people to know that it is ok if they aren't at "100%" levels yet.
@zacpowerleon
@zacpowerleon 2 года назад
I absolutely agree with you, he’s said in podcasts and other videos in the past where its more important to be “consistently good rather than occasionally great” and I really resonated with that. For some people, waking up early in the morning and doing their workout when they absolutely didn’t want to is their version of “good”. Hitting their metrics and doing everything properly in their workout is “great”. For him to say that just showing up is the bare minimum is kind of contradicting that whole statement he’s been saying in the past. I think that doing the workout when you didn’t want to is much better than not doing it at all, and that people should be proud of themselves when they had 0 motivation to do it. And I disagree with him saying that’s not discipline, because that absolutely is. Maybe in the future that’ll be their bare minimum, but for someone just starting that is a step in the right direction.
@erinhoril7217
@erinhoril7217 2 года назад
Yup. That left a bad taste in my mouth. No one nails their workouts 100% of the time. If they do, the workouts aren't hard enough ;)
@srcstcgngr2905
@srcstcgngr2905 2 года назад
Yeh exactly, you doing 0-10 effort will build to 10-20 after a week and then 20-30 and then it’s a couple months later and you’re consistently doing 50 versus trying to go 100% for a few days failing and then the cycle of starting again. Consistency I think is always more effective then going 100 all the time

I started running in college in the late 80s. Didn’t have any aspirations of competing in races. Came across The book Ultramarathon Man and that lit the fire. My first race ever was the Heartland 50 mile in Cassoday Kansas in 2006. I ran 50-70 mile weeks and never had issues with fatigue or burnout. But something in that race broke me. I had breathing difficulties for years after and running was an extreme chore. The life and spring in my stride was and still is gone. 830/ minute miles turned into 1030 miles in an instant. And those were a struggle. I saw specialist after specialist after specialist. Never an answer or cause.

I have been following your advice on heart rate training for running and it is definitely working. In 3 months or so I am running miles up to 1 min faster with the same heart rate that I had at 10min miles. Now 9min flat or even 8min30sec a mile is achieved at a 145 bpm where before I was over 160bpm at that pace. Great shot dude. Can't wait to see you maul Buffalo.

You are right on the money with burnout. The most difficult thing I'm facing now is having to take recovery days now that my mileage is up to 26mi/wk and I've added rucks. My endurance has tripled, I've changed my diet to be performance based, started rolling out, my RHR is between 48-53bpm. I struggle because mentally I want to go go go and get that endurance training in but my body cannot keep up e.g. IT band soreness, calf soreness, foot blisters. I think I'll drop my weekly mileage volume to accommodate, it just sucks mentally to take time off to recover. I'm sure others can relate.

Garmin Tip: Add those workouts to your Garmin schedule in Connect. Then when you open that workout type, such as run, it’ll automatically ask you if you want to perform that workout since it’s on the schedule. No more searching for your workout on your watch.
