I got sick of eating bad food at tourist traps in Nepal, so I went out to find authentic Nepali food. I'll show you what I found, and I'll give you tips on how you to can discover home-cooked authentic food while travelling in Nepal and India.
What I found was Khaja Ghars (Snack Houses). They serve fresh homemade food, just like your mum would make. They're the same dhabas in India. As you travel around Nepal, make sure to eat at Khaja Ghars to avoid the disappointing food that many tourist restaurants serve.
Ramesh and Renu's "Bhedasingh Khaja Ghar" (भेडासिंङ्ग खाजा घर) is on Google Maps goo.gl/maps/Afo4tZyj9xqka8t49. Go eat there and leave a review.
I've also featured them on my blog "The Best Cheap Eats in Kathmandu" blog.karlrock.com/the-best-ch....

@@elpatron4950 I found the history online! This is so interesting, somehow I feel happy because we share the same food even though we live far apart 😊 “Through examining the etymology, the similar sounding name strongly suggests that indeed acar was derived from Indian achar pickle. Indian achar was transmitted in antiquity to the maritime realm of Southeast Asia, which today recognized as acar in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, and then on to the Philippines as atchara. The adoption of this vegetable pickling technique possibly took place during the Srivijaya period between 7th to 13th century.”

A great advice to anyone visiting Nepal : Don't go to fancy and expensive restaurants and cafe for eating pizza, burger and foods you usually eat in your country. Instead, try to go to local and cheap restaurants to eat Nepali foods. They are so unique and delicious that you will feel lucky to try those foods at least once in your life. You will enjoy Nepali foods for sure. Not only Nepal, whenever you visit other countries, try their local foods and items. Enjoy their culture.😊

Nepal was my first trip overseas because my Nepalese friend was getting married. I went for a month and stayed in a few different places, but our hub was in Kathmandu on one of the main streets where we stayed with my friends parents. Nepal is an incredible country, very lovely people - but I suspect my experience was a bit different as I was with a local and his family are quite well known. We rarely got hassled for tour guides/taxis etc cos people could see we were with a Nepalese person. We got to see the best local known places for really good prices, and when we went to Thamel which is tourist spot we knew what places to avoid. I’m very lucky for the experience I had, but man if you can travel Nepal with someone who speaks local language your experience is enhanced ten fold. The people are incredibly friendly, we found ourselves travelling through cities (like in the old city district in Bhaktapur) and asking people if we could see into their homes. Multiple times people just let us in and walked us through and let us ask questions. We always gave people money to show thanks, or gave them a gift of some kind as I understand money can be a bit rude. People more often than not just were happy to speak to us. Beautiful country.

I've been a chef for so many years. I've learned, no matter your culture or your environment. Food is life. Good food is a happy life. Food is a universal language, and I love to enjoy every aspect of it. I would love nothing less than to spend a day or a week, cooking with these people that know what truly matters in life. We can certainly teach each other. I wish to run a food truck, so I can bring these ideas to people. Thank you for reigniting the passion I have for food.

There is one thing that I have noticed about you Karl... Your approach is so respectful and wholesome. Even when it comes to scammers and con artists, as much as you want to reveal the truth, you never dehumanise them. You just provide tips on how to avoid being duped, and don't try to emasculate them as people. I take my hat of to you sir!

Good tip on avoiding touts! When I visit Asian countries I look for a line of local people outside the restaurant. If locals are waiting to get in, I can always count on delicious local fare at a great price.

Yes and we noticed in Malaysia that if a Malay restaurant like Satay Kajang for example has many non Malay customers it is good whereas here in Australia if an Asian restaurant, Indonesian, Malaysian, Indo-Pakistani, has customers from its own ethnic origin it's likely to be good.

I like that they have a sign in MANY different languages. That makes me think they are considerate and smart. Sometimes when you go to a restaurant its not the restaurant itself that is bad. Sometimes its just the employee who is trying to hustle, or just doesn't really give a fk or doesn't have the right outlook. I went back to a Chinese restaurant I haven't been to in about 10 years and it was under new ownership. The Chicken Balls were amazing this last time I went. Which caused me to go back lol. Before under the old ownership the chicken balls were terrible and you/we only got about 7-8 of them. This time or the same price, 20+ and amazing.
