Thanks Gena for your very informative videos! Growing out my naturally curly hair has been a challenge for me as I have always had short hair and never had the education on taking care of long curls! so thanks again! I did want to ask your opinion on product application; Should I be layering moisturizing products before the protein-rich products or vice-versa? Will it make a difference?

Hi love! Would love to hear your take / updated video on Protein & what products you would recommend? I’ve recently learned I need A LOT more protein, I was only moisturizing my hair which was coming out gummy and limp. I do have Olaplex 3 but tbh it’s not been my favorite product so far. Would love to hear your take & if you could do a comparison video kinda like how you explain the different proteins & what they do etc, I would be forever grateful!

Hi Gena ~ Juli here > a curly hair newbie. For years I purchased every product you can imagine to MAKE my hair curly or even wavy. Then my awesome hairdresser cut my hair to great layers that revealed that I have wavy/slightly curly hair!! WHO KNEW!! I very much like your videos, you are clear and not overwhelming with information, thank you for that. I did the float test, and twice my hair did not sink from the surface of the water. Do I need protein or not?? And how do I know what products contain protein??

Hi Gena thanks for your amazing videos!! I just watched your protein overload video and you said it can take up to 4 weeks to re balance your hair. I am in a severe protein overload since weeks because i did too many rice water rinse :( Now I have been using protein free stylers since 2 weeks and my hair feels a little better but it have no structure and my hair dont curls. Do you think it is time for me to incorporate some stylers with protein? Will it help if i cut a little my hair? I am soo desperate i miss my healthy curls :( I hope you can help me, thank you❤️

Hi so I have complicated hair and I need some advice. On the outside my hair is just wavy probably like a 2B but then underneath and random pieces are a 3b. Are there any products or solutions anyone can recommend to either make my 2B hair more curly or just for it too look better? It’s rlly long and gets super frizzy and knotty all the time and I have to restyle every day or two. Any recommendations will help🤗

So excited to see you try out the Curlsmith foam! I've been using it with the Noughty Thirst-Aid spray as a base and my curls are so bouncy and nourished! Would you say the foam is moisturizing enough that someone could use it by itself without a moisture base? I have thin 3a/b curls so my main concern is limiting products to avoid weighing my hair down.
@GenaMarie
@GenaMarie 3 года назад
I don’t think the foam would be moisturizing enough to be your only moisturizing products if your curls tend to get dry. I would try the Curlsmith weightless air dry cream if you havent already. It’s a great light weight leave in conditioner bit.ly/36q5DB5

Hi Gena I have a question. I do not color or anything and have fine 2b hair. Lately due to thyroid issues I’m noticing more fallout and my hair seems to have no life. Dry, thin 🤷🏻‍♀️. Hi Gena! Would you mind helping me with this question on protein? My hair likes protein so I always use one styler with protein, either my leave-in or gel. I watched a video about moisture/protein and the lady said that gels are not absorbed into the hair.. I am so confused because I am always looking for gels that have protein, and if this is true why do gels then have protein in it at all?😊

Hi Gena I love your videos!😁 I have 2C-3A curls and I do the same hair routine you do except I use the weightless air dry cream first before the protein cream for extra moisture. I do not use the foam because my scalp does not agree with it. how would you refresh this look? I try to leave the cast for next day and then scrunch but I notice that later in the day my curls dont hold the definition and it gets frizzy..

For my next day hair, I just added some water and a little of the Air Dry Cream to my ends to add some moisture back. I like the Air Dry Cream to add light moisture instead od added more protein cream in. Then I diffused on low heat for a minute to bounce them back up. By day 3, I needed a bit more hold and needed to detangle some so I used the Air Dry cream again to finger detangle, added some more of the Souffle for hold, and diffused again. Hope that helps!

I just got it..haven’t used yet. Wondering your thoughts? Also, do you use any type of oil as a finisher or sealant? Have you ever tried Verb Curl line or Ghost line as well as the Aveda Be Curly? Ty for your reply. 🤗🤗🤗

Happy V-day!! Yes I actually featured the Air Dry cream in my last video here about how to dry your faster: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oqastjzGHWo.html I love it! Also, I don't usually need oil to seal when I use a strong hold gel. I find they just break up my cast too much and I like to keep some in for lasting hold. I have used the Aveda Be Curly line wayy back in the day, before I was more strict curly girl method. I don't currently use them because I prefer to avoid silicones (for my hair type). Maybe one day I'll try it again :)

Hey Gena. So grateful you did this video. I have SEVER damage from Proteins. It been a lil over a year now since using any kind of protein. the kicker is I mean ANYTHING that mimicks a protein aloe vera coconut flaxseed any extracts unless it specifies it's an oil. I've recently discover this about my hair my hair. Seems like I can not learn enough about proteins yet. I'm having a really hard time particularly finding a cream or a gel that doesn't contain any kind of protein a Panhenol Glycerin Potassium Sobate . Film Foaming humectant is supposed to help but sometimes it can do the opposite and create more frizz depending on the weather too. Any suggestions... Thanks so much
@GenaMarie
@GenaMarie 3 года назад
That's a tough one! It sounds like you have learned a lot. There are so many ingredients that mimic protein that I've been learning about too. One I discovered when researching this video was pumpkin seed, an ingredient in some Curlsmith products that aids in protein absorption. Have you tried using some super moisturizing deep conditioners with heat to help them really penetrate?
@nicolestanovich1723
@nicolestanovich1723 3 года назад
Thanks. Again. I know right I'm always finding out more and more about these proteins. I'm determined though because my hair is me. If there anything you run across please keep me in your mind. Anything that MIMICKS. And oils. Not sure something saidt be careful of coconut of course and believe jojoba. Not sure still working on that one. But I emailed you a while back asking about flash drying and it can be harmful to your hair depending on what condition it in. So in my case it bad. Have much less fall out and less breakage now that I'm not using aleo vera and you will be surprised besides how many products contain this. I'm working on something else . I'll have to share with you privately that might help lotsss of us out. Thanks so much.

Can you tell me what the logic is behind deep conditioning following a protein treatment on the same day? I had always been told to do them on separate days so the hair can more fully benefit from either but I'm wondering if maybe doing them on the same day would help me see results I like better.
@GenaMarie
@GenaMarie 3 года назад
For me, deep conditioning after adds the moisture and softness back after a protein or a bond treatment. If not, my hair can feel stiff and I get flash drying when trying to style. It re-balances the moisture
@trishgoudreau5082
@trishgoudreau5082 3 года назад

I was wondering.. if I only wash my hair once a week. Is good to do one week a protein treatment and the next a moisturizing treatment. (And each week balance with the styling products). Or it would be better to do both a protein and a moisturizing treatment the same day?
@GenaMarie
@GenaMarie 3 года назад
It's up to you and how your hair responds to protein. For my hair, I need to follow up a protein or bond treatment with a deep conditioner that is moisturizing or else my hair feels brittle after and I get flash drying. After using a moisturizing deep conditioner after the treatment, my hair is hydrated and has the great effects of the protein treatment. However, I would still alternate and not use the protein or bond treatment once a week. For example, one week you could do the Bond Curl + deep conditioner, then the next week do just the deep conditioner.

@GenaMarie

I think you focus on mainly moisture and then incorporate some protein maybe once a month. Go for a deep conditioner that has some protein ingredients in it but is also moisturizing. You could also use a styler sometimes with mild proteins like amino acids.
