About to buy an akubra so looking at tips and tricks. Might use this tip to bash my dads 20 year old hat. Also, how has this bloke not been discovered by Tourism Australia / Mainstream Media etc. He’s a great fit.
Just had to comment and say thanks! I actually recieved a vintage Akubra sambrero from my father, and was looking at how to reshape it. I was a bit worried at the size of the brim, and how tall the unbeaten crown is... now that I have seen the possibilities of this hat, i will DEFINITELY be having a play with it 😁😁 thank you so much brother. Peace from brissy ✌️
Thanks for the bash guide! Just bashed my first Akubra Sombrero today and it came up a treat. Put a plaited kangaroo leather band on and she now looks like a proper Aussie bush hat.
Great tutorial bloke. I’ve been apprehensive about bashing my Rough Rider because I always thought it had to be done by a hatter but I’m confident to do it myself now. Cheers bud
Thank you for this great video... I love the character you put into your hat. I have an Akubra that I bought about 35 years ago and never knew how to shape the top and so I never have worn it more than a couple of times... Mine is the same color as yours and it is an Akubra Squatter Imperial. I really want to wear mine now, so I am going to experiment with how to shape mine... Thanks again.
I found this video extremely useful, I love the bash design you employ here. I have bashed my golden spur to try and replicate it, but with a more standard western brim. I call it the Bush Bash, so you can add Style icon to your CV 🤣. Big love from the UK.
Loved that review mate. I’ve actually Rebashed my Sombrero to have a flat brim somewhat similar to the Territory because the territory has a crown that is to shallow for my head haha. Turned out a treat
This helped me a lot. i got my Sombrero today after waiting for months for a restock. They don't make many of these anymore, and I was lucky enough to jump onto the Hats by the Hundred website on a day they had my size in stock. I did exactly what you showed here, and it came out great. My only gripe is that cow band! It's the worst band Akubra makes, and then they glue it on with Gorilla Glue or something and it's really hard to get off. I tore my first Sombrero trying to get it off with a knife, but not this time. (I still wear the torn one, but it always bothered me.) Anyway, thanks for making this!! G'day!
And I thought I wore a tall crown with my old gus crease Bailey! Looking forward to buying a sombrero and teying this crown style out here in the American Southwest!
Top tutorial video. Too right, there aren’t very many instructional videos on how to bash an Akubra. Yours was the best one I’ve watched by far. Thanks for emphasising to not apply direct steam to the inside hat band. I would’ve loved watching the whole video, without the cut you edited into the middle of the clip. Your old hat still had plenty of life left in it, but I appreciate that you made your tutorial before your old hat was completely cactus, so we viewers could see the desired shape you were going for when you were shaping your new hat to resemble your old one. How did you get into the Sombrero style?
Hey David thanks for the video, it's perfect. Which type of akubra hat is your original one ? I like the green kaki colour of your old hat. Thanks, waiting for the next full documentary !!
G’day Kevin, cheers for the comment 👍🏼. They are actually both the same hat and the old hat looked the same when it was new 😂. It’s an Akubra sombrero and only comes in one colour. I’ve been so busy out bush but haven’t had the time to put together another longer doco. Hopefully some time this year.
Cheers for the video mate! Really useful. Emigrating Down Under later this year and one of the first things I'll be buying is an Australian bush hat. Any opinion/experience on/with hats from Jacaru?
I have to ask, the colour change from new to old.... How long in wear & weather to get kind of colour or dye fade did your old hat take to get the santone colour?
I wore the old hat almost every day for three years including some big wet seasons of proper rain but it always amazes me looking back at how much the colour changes over time.
Gday Dave I hope you're well mate and thank you for the video. I just got myself a sombrero and I noticed at the 3:38 mark on your video the hat shape changes dramatically what did you so I can achieve the same look? Cheers mate
It’s just a matter of steaming and shaping, steaming and shaping until you have it how you like it. Careful you don’t apply too much steam to the band directly otherwise it can shrink. 👍🏼
The old hat is well past it’s days unfortunately. Up north in this climate the second you stop wearing an old hat it absorbs humidity and goes mouldy and horrible. The wonders of tropical northern Australia 😂👍🏼
