My 3 year old cousin was with my uncle and she accidentally found half of a 150 inch deer. They walked about 250 more yards and she found the matching antler.
I absolutely suck at this. Every late winter/spring I think to myself "I'll go walk the deer trails near me and look for sheds" and each year I find absolutely nothing lol.
Look next to fences. Bucks will jump over and their sheds will fall off when they land. Look for rubs on trees too, the bucks want to get rid of the antlers and you can see rub on trees so search around there. Take it slow, I once stepped right on top of a shed because I didn’t look
Ill tell everyone the best kept secret to shed hunting. All you need is about 2000 acres of property that no one else is aloud to hunt or trespass on. Youll find them anywhere and everwhere. I'm yet to find a guy w a truck bed full on public ground.
I watched your video before I went out looking for sheds, and after about 2 hours I found my first shed. And then I found the matching shed less than 10 yards away. Thanks for all the tips, they really helped!
It's simple have good land that holds bucks and lots of food. Very difficult to find antlers without these things no matter where or how much area you cover.
Used to find a lot of shed but because of RU-vid and social media shed hunting is ruined boot tracks everywhere trespassing everywhere hardly any sheds to find anymore used to be 50-100’sheds a year now barly find 15 it’s a joke
Binoculars are definitely a MUST lol. Didn't have mine one day an fell in the river like mid February tryin to walk across some logs because i thought i seen one on the other side. Ended up being a stick an by the time i made it back to the truck i was seeing purple. Could have been a very bad scenario if i would have been farther out.
Fellow Pennsylvanian here.❤ Thanks for the video. Love the Shed Hunting tips! I'm subscribed! This will be my first year actually actively hunting for sheds. I live in Waynesboro, near the Mason/Dixon line in Franklin Co. Where are you in PA? Keep up the great work. Also Penguins or Flyers?😀
I live in Ohio and the land I hunt is private on the land I hunt to the right and left of the property right beside each other is two sets of rr tracks it's also surrounded buy cornfields but it's all been cut and I don't have permission to hunt that the property that I hunt i don't think has a ton of food source but has tons of giant rubs and scrapes and heavy trails the deer bed along the track I found one old small 4 and a huge fresh 4 point side I guess what I'm asking is should I just stay to the trails or just look everywhere any advice on how I should approach hunting sheds on the property thanks
I live in whiting NJ live in a privet 55 older community, My back yard is a bedding area for 8 to 12 deer, I have been watching 3 nice bucks and want one of their sheds, so should I be able to find the sheds in my yard? This morning I saw the herd one buck with out sheds rr so I guess this is the time to start looking
In Idaho, a deer or elk won't always winter in the same area. So some spring shed years will be very different. Ive had years I put on 100 miles to find 1 shed. Other years in those same exact areas, like this last spring, I found over 20 sheds throughout the season. Frustrating on the bad years, but getting out is best definitely on cloudy days and binos is a must. Great video.
I am one thing to correct this guy in the blue shirt about snow. He said to wait until the snow melts oh that makes it so hard to find if you ask me because they’re the same color as the ground not only that but the squirrels in the mice get to it and start chewing on them. It is February 24 today and in yesterday and the day before I found a total of six sheds in the snow just staying on the trail. we had about two Feet of snow just bring a Walkingstick make sure you stay on the trail and I found most of them in the pines Lebanon eating on a lot of Pineneedles this year during the winter. My point is find a good deer Trail in the snow and stay on it and some wander off in different directions bring helpers with
Shed hunting isn't necessary with the advent of trail cams, so don't feel bad if you aren't successful at it. The intell from trail cams regarding mature buck feeding and bedding patterns during the October and November hunting seasons is much more valuable than the intell you get from finding sheds outside of the hunting seasons.
@@gheft762 Interesting. In that case I'd probably just look for sheds while walking to my late season bowhunting stands, but wouldn't shed hunt during the bowhunting season, just to shed hunt. The mature bucks on my place wouldn't put up with that for very long and I don't like pushing bucks to the neighbors, hunting season or not.
I actedently found a two point whitetail antler on a walk on my 40 acres. Then I went out 3 months later and a I found nothing. Edit: I also found the antler in November does this mean that it was from the year before?
To clean it: I’ve found that using both a toothbrush and toothpick help in removing bark and dirt from antlers. To preserve it: You don’t really need to do anything. Assuming you will keep your antler indoors, away from fungi and rodents, it will pretty much last forever, and will not decompose any further.
I find a lot of sheds while snowmobiling in late December and January. Deer and moose travel the snowmobile trails, mostly at night, and drop antlers right on the trail. The only trick to finding them is to get out early in the morning. If I find one I'll follow his tracks and often find the other one.
