Pretty much. Windows update has never been easier, just restart and wait for 4 hours until the update is installed. There's never been anything broken with windows update. My pc is quite slow because of many services running in the background but who cares, i need it. PCs in the future will be better obviously because everyone will have a 4K ultra HD camera shipped along with its windows installation! How convenient is that?
@@nobleradical2158 To be fair to the Microsoft community, it's an ancient and time-honored tradition. As soon as you boot up your new Windows device, you fire up IE (or now Edge) and execute the one voluntary Bing search that computer will ever see in order to download a halfway decent browser.
I must be a real Linux user because I can't actually grow much facial hair but I can grow a perfectly thick neckbeard. I used to chalk it up to my Korean genetics but now I'm 100% convinced it was Arch Linux running on a busted plastic budget laptop for several years.

The most important thing is to always ALWAYS mention that "that isnt a problem on linux" whenever someone is having some minor inconvenience on any other os, even mobile. But then also to blatantly ignore anyone who asks why you spent 6 hours debugging & changing your window manager because it wouldnt do its one job i use arch & i3 btw

When developing Unix-based software, don't forget to make your docs as hard as possible to understand for Windows users, and just make it not beginner friendly at all, dont forget to NEVER add links to the 38 other softwares and command lines people were supposed to download beforehand and just assume they did it already.

@@WK-47 Like I said further up, seems to me like these stereotypes mostly apply to desktop hobbyists. I know loads of 'corporate' server admins who do this for their day job and basically none of them have beards or a lack of bathing water at home. Most corporate enterprise shops I've seen are built on Oracle or CentOS or RHEL, _sometimes_ an LTS Ubuntu build. These distros are designed to mostly just work without too much black magic or ancient runes. Compare to Gentoo, which is like specifying a kit car and assembling it. Mind you that's still child's play compared to Slackware.
Much more important for any real Linux Professional: Write your own package manager ASAP. And name every standard package different from what they are on other distributions. And please move your package repository around every few months. That is the hallmark of excellence! There are just too few ways in Linux to manage packages. Bonus points if you create your own distribution as well.

The ancient ThinkPad is SO accurate. I knew someone just like that. But in my experience these stereotypes mostly apply to hobbyist desktop Linux users. I work in corporate IT, many of the Linux server admins doing corporate stuff for their salaried day job are _generally_ a lot more normal. Or at least they appear to be while at work.
Been here for many years, I used to make my living fixing Windows computers, but had enough of that crap back in 2006, and went to managing Mac and Linux servers, until Apple made a mess of the server version.

vi and nano both are great editors. to be a true linux user you have to prove that EVERYTHING can be done on linux, including configuring and answering an IP phone call using command line.
@@dragonsaige That's not even a challenge anymore. Unless the developer is a dick like Epic or Bungie and purposely not letting a game run on Linux. You just slap proton on everything and run it. I've only had a couple games that required me to do an extra step and those haven't been hard and it's all documented on a central website. I mean the Steam deck has been a thing for a year now and it's playing the latest games right now.

Unironically, while I think GUI options are nice for those who are allergic to the keyboard, the terminal is always gonna be faster so I want it to always be an option. Also open source is just good. Full stop.

To be fair, most communities actually embrace that kind of self-deprecating satire. It's more akin to affectionate parodies, which may make fun of the source material, but come from a place of appreciation. (As opposed to just mocking it out of spite.)

I completed my first base Arch install when I was 17 and started taking estrogen 2 years later. The programmer socks are cool but you gotta get the programmer dress, programmer lavender body wash, programmer push-up bra, programmer panties etc.
With a bit of luck the programmer push-up bra becomes obsolete after a few months of programmer-E...! Never really wore mine, and only started wearing bras with some regularity now that my programmer-chest is approaching C-cup...!
This is surprisingly accurate. However, I don't have special socks - instead I have my fingerless gloves. Also: Don't use nano. It's total crap. Once you got used to vim, it's actually super efficient and powerful. Yes: I'm fun at parties and I am aware that I just massively checked off the point about vim, so as a contrast I might want to throw in that I also use VSCodium a lot. ;) With the right extensions installed, it's actually a pretty good IDE and editor. When I started using Linux back in the days, all IDEs on Linux were basically crap, but nowadays you have VSCodium, IntelliJ, PyCharm, and probably some more IDEs which can really add value and efficiency to your programming work. PS: Yes, I also use Ubuntu. I need a Linux that "just works". Sorry, Arch users.

I think the entire video is hilarious, and a great reminder of things we shouldn't do. Although let me say there is one of these things that's actually good for the Linux community if we didn't take it too far. If you want an inexpensive machine to run Linux, you could do worse than a used Thinkpad. They generally have good support for Linux, and seem to be fairly durable.
And in the comment section of this comment we see the linux user in its natural habitat, debating which old laptop goes best with using Linux, statistics show that 3 out of ever 4 of these beautiful creatures are using arch linux on their machines at this moment! How exciting

I'm a longtime Linux user. Sorry to disappoint anyone but I love the outdoors, sunshine and fresh air. I've got a wife (40 year relationship) and two kids (now adults). Had a few friends along the way (some died, some moved away). I have a beard but it's trimmed close and I shower at least once a day. I'm so sorry to let the Linux community down by not adhering to convention. 😂
@@Emp31 Funny how Arch is something I've never really tried out. All of the hardware I have is hand-me-downs. My first real contact with Linux started out over a decade ago with Puppy Linux. From there, I mostly tried all kinds of Ubuntu derivatives. Currently using Peppermint OS and MX-Linux for the most part. At this point, spring is my time to stay outdoors as much as possible but still trying to get over my COVID symptoms. This thing doesn't wanna leave my system yet. Ugh, not much fun.

The main thing with the "old" laptops is not that they are old. Those Lenovo X200/ X220 laptops just had great keyboards, far better than the crappy keyboards on laptops nowadays.
This is absolutely true. I can't stand using any other laptop keyboards. The layout is almost always off in some way too, on top of feeling like hot garbage to type on.
Well, you would think so, but I happen to use mostly RAM-disks, and dual RTX3090, in text mode. And I wear long furry socks. By beard knows what to do by itself, I need not disturb it.
Story of my life: I bought programming socks as a gag. Knew nothing about programming at the time, only ever used Windows, majored in Humanities. Well, SOMEHOW, life just bended around the fact that I now owned purple programming socks, and by the next Christmas I became junior developer at a local IT company.
I know that this is designed to be newbie friendly but it grind my gears that we started to forget that virginity has always been the one condition straight from arch terms and conditions page that had been hidden away for the sake of "inclusivity".

I really felt like I was starting to get the hang of it when I started getting mad when I saw people using Chrome and told them to install Firefox. Once I did that I really felt apart of the community.
But Firefox has something like a 3-6 percent market share. To be a true Linux user, you simply must use some obscure Firefox fork, preferably something that is only the standard browser on one distro or better yet, a command line browser.
One more important thing to do as a Linux user in Linux community, is to click on every videos that are about Linux so that everyone will know you're a Linux user base on your RU-vid's recommendation.
The stickers on the ThinkPad are ULTRA accurate. My X220 literally has ALL of the same stickers on it as in the video at 1:12. Those stickers are from the $1 Linux stickers pack from StickerMule. This video made me feel my heart in my throat because I miss those days. I used Xubuntu and Mint and various other random distros exclusively for 7 or 8 years and the only reason I switched back was because my work gave me a W10 laptop and, eh, I didn't hate it anymore for the first time in almost a decade. Must haves for the new linux user includes anti fungal cream, a dental emergency kit consisting of super glue and tooth pics, wipes (to wipe around the eyes during summer) a wire clipper for podiatry self sufficiency, artificial tears and some rubbing alcohol for skin emergencies. Permethrin roll-on is great for personal pest control. A supply of stimulants can be very useful if you are the type that may lose interest in food, or if you feel that you can not survive on 240 minutes of sleep per day.
To avoid having to help people for free I used to say "Sorry, I only use Mac". As more and more people in my vicinity are using Macs these days i've moved on to "Sorry, I only use Linux". Works like a charm.
