Here's an overview of this How To Be Alone by Jonathan Franzen, a story of how Franzen became a writer and sees the future of fiction. Essential to all Franzen fans and anyone thinking seriously about the future of classic fiction. Something for both readers and writers here!

My * ratings mainly reflect my estimate of accessibility/likeability to a general audience. Sometimes I award 5*s to less accessible books that I think have important messages and good morals.
* = Dislike (not recommended) ("failed")
** = Okay (recommended to select audience) ("flawed")
*** = Like (recommended to general audience) ("fine")
**** = Really like (strongly recommended to select audience) ("focused")
***** = Love (strongly recommended to general audience) ("fervent")

Great review. Completely agree, I read this after finishing corrections, freedom and purity craving more Franzen but ended up giving it a 1* on goodreads!

I remember you saying his essays were bad, I almost gave up early on but I stuck with it and liked some of the later ones. I think they'll only be interesting to people looking for writing advice!

I couldn't disagree more. I pretty much loved every essay and found Lost in The Mail fascinating. I think the collection is less about writing and reading and more about the state that America is in and its relationship with capitalism. Also, First City is about living in New York and there's not much to say? That whole essay pretty much rekindles Baudrillard's writings on American identity or lack of, through its urban and suburban sprawls, did you skim through that one?
