I'm married and while we prioritize each other I'm NOT his #1 priority, nor is he mine. We used to have a codependent relationship, but after therapy we've learned to put ourselves first and have healthy boundaries. Another person should never be the center of your world, attention, main priority, or the source of your happiness. Sure they are *ONE* priority, but if you make someone else your #1 priority it's so easy to lose yourself in the relationship. Not healthy. When you are loving yourself you glow from the inside out and draw others to you like a magnet. You can show up as your best self in the relationship. I want my husband to put himself first so he can be the best, loving partner for me, and vice versa.

I believe 1. Me first and 2. #1 priority are 2 different points. Matt said you put yourself first but when the other person is your #1 priority they still come after you. In my case my relationship with God is first so if I'm in a relationship the other guy is #2. That said, the only person that comes before him is GOD. I was married to another "Christian" but he was so incredibly selfish that over time my friends new he was a narcissist. We were so opposite, like night and day. But I was so young and met him in Bible College. I believed it was a good thing at the time but unfortunately they change when they get married. Now in my 40's and still not sure if I even want a relationship. People seem more dangerous these days, more selfish. I don't have the time or energy for games or selfishness. Movin slow.

Whenever I demand what I deserve (respect, quality time etc.), other women remind me not to be so "bossy" or I'll lose my guy and will be lonely. Wrong! I'd feel lonely with a guy who wouldn't care about me. And I'd rather get rid of someone like that and spend time with other people who really care.

I accepted crumbs for 3 years, I was 6th on his priority list, after his kids (I was ok with that one), then his staff, then his friends, his ex, his parents, then me. Plus when he saw me, he was always 1-2 hours late. My time was valuable also, that’s time away from my kids or doing self-care. I did a lot for him but got crumbs. I am now married to someone else. 😊

YAZZZZZZZ!!!! This was the piece I was missing, thank you Matt. I always meet amazing men and then things go south and really bad because I didn’t know that I needed to screen them from the beginning on what their #1 priority was. Because after getting to know them and thank GOD I didn’t get intimate with all of them throughout my life they would hit me with the line “I’m not looking for a relationship”. Up until this video I thought I was an odd ball and destined to be alone because I believed that I can manage multiple areas in my life as long as I time managed properly. By my being a construction & finance major I’m excellent at time management. Now I know I was just dealing with people where fun and or career was the #1 priority. Thank you again.

Love this advice! One question though. If a man wants to put the relationship first, but has a lot of work to do to reach his goals and ambitions, he is naturally going to be really busy and not have as much time to spend with you. How to know if he is prioritising you, but just has minimal time, VS he isn't giving you as much attention as he should? Hard to distinguish...

Hi Matt. Great video. A little over a month ago my boyfriend broke up with me because he said was too complicated and overcommitted given that he is a single dad of 3, hectic work schedule, clients on a side business he has, plus studying for professional license. He felt it was unfair and hurtful to me. Even though I appreciate his honesty, why did he go online in search for a relationship? Why did he ask me to be his girlfriend?

I am currently pursuing a master degree so it wouldn’t bother me to see him once or twice a week because that is all the time I got. However, it was disappointing to me that he ended things instead of organizing things in his life to make time for a relationship. He’s been divorces for 3 yrs and has never introduced anybody to his kids. He had asked me for time to get things settled and wanting me to meet his kids (i don’t have kids btw). I think he is a great guy and wonderful dad. I felt a special connection with him from the beginning. I don’t date men with kids. But I felt this guy was worth trying. I never pressured him, because again I am busy too. It was something in him, b/c I told him he was NOT hurting me b/c I have a lot going on for me too. What amazes me is that first he asks for time to organize his schedule, then he cuts me off saying his kids are priority right now and that he was sorry. Please let me know your thoughts. I am doing fine and want a man to treat me as a priority so I am not chasing. We have not spoken. Thank you Matt. Love your advice always! 😉

I also wanted to say thank you for the #1 tip about crumbs. I have a friend now who I took the time to get to know for 4 months (5 days a week, we weren’t co-workers) before getting intimate with. He made his intentions known 2 months prior to intimacy. But past experiences taught me that building an emotional connection was important first so I did. After becoming intimate 2 weeks ago he has now been trying to give me crumbs of his time. And It dawned on me 3 days ago what was going on, but We haven’t hung out in a week because I wasn’t comfortable with the late night calls, but because of this video I understand now how he was prioritizing me. From a LOA stand point you helped me to completely detached and not be hurt or angry because there is nothing wrong with people having different goals and priorities I just don’t have to accept it. Our friendship is more valuable. I had that conversation with him the other night and he agreed, but actions speak louder then words. Let’s see how the Universe works with this new knowledge.

What about those men who have kids but get them every other weekend and don’t know how to prioritize you when it’s his weekend to get the kids. In other words, he says he doesn’t have time for a relationship when the kids are around.

Well depending on how old the kids are, I mean and depending on where you guys are at in a relationship, it might be the completely right thing that the kids are his #1 priority on those weekends, I mean those are his children who more than anyone else deserve to be their parents priority, especially when they don't get to see that parent all the time. It's a process, but you also have to be prepared that every other weekend this is what it is and try to be supportive and schedule your big things together on those alternate weekends and weeknights. Kids deserve to have their parents attention and focus.

Matthew, you say you read the comments, so I hope you see this... When you give us real life examples, it seems the women are always able to snag another guy right off the bat. I just wanted to remind you that it's not that easy, especially for a woman in her 60s. Don't get me wrong, I love your videos; however, when we let a not so nice guy go, it could take years to meet another man worthy of our time.

No guru out there is going to make an existing man appreciate you if he didn't before. As someone who was in that position, being stuck on a guy that didn't appreciate me and getting crumbs from him in terms of time, I finally took the courage to leave, and move on. I then met the man of my dreams!! My new man is hotter, and treats me better than the ex. No crumbs, no BS. He makes me his priority. Let go of a shitty guy to allow a better man into your life!
