He is almost certainly referring to his friend Joe, who jumped from the Menai Straits brigde. Joe's body was never found. Ren has said that was alerted by a phone call from a friend that Joe was threatening to jump. He ran to the bridge but got there too late.

Several reactors have said “I am not okay” after Ren finished that last hit. It gets me every time. About a month after For Joe released I lost a friend to a self inflicted overdose of prescription medication. He was going through a divorce and could not beat his demons. He survived a hellish tour in Iraq and 17 years on the local police force.

It is an unexplainable musical intimacy & to love them in their darkest gives me a splinter of hope.

As you have read 60 times before me, this song was about the pain of losing someone to suicide, with the very last verse being for Joe Hughes, Rens best friend, as are the songs Suicide, For Joe, and Freckled Angels (the song and the entire album of the same name, because Joe was covered with freckles, and you'll actually hear Ren break down when he performs that song). They're all amazing, but yes, they will tear your guts out. Also, if you want to see how amazing Ren is on piano, his song Mackay, is a piano instrumental dedicated to his friend with that name. Finally, if you want to laugh instead of cry for awhile, and see how talented Ren is, across all genres, check out Love Music 1-4(don't let the titles fool you, they are NOT romantic songs, lol). You really can't go wrong with Ren, just wanted to hear you laugh awhile dear. Keep it up, you're awesome, you RENegade!

thank you for such an empathetic reaction, i relate to this song so much, i have totally forgotten how to be me. in the last few years my beautiful daughter Aleisha passed away at 17, i miss her every second of the day (our last pic together is my profile ) my husband and my supposed best friend of over 30 years had an affair with his brothers wife and imploded our families. i now live alone with my 2 furry best friends, i have a degenerative disease which has took my mobility and leaves me in chronic pain, tbh the list goes on, but finding Ren and the renegades has truly helped me to feel less alone xxx

That part about not feeling safe in these halls, there are bruises on the walls... Think about Ren laying in a bed at hospital with no ease of suffering in sight.

The "Joe Trilogy" is Freckled Angels (about 10 years old), Suicide and For Joe. The third one calls back the first two.

Also, i don't know if you are already aware but Ren's first solo concert in 4 years is coming later this month during the Secret Garden Party Festival in the UK July 25-28. Do not know yet what day Ren performs.

He is talking about his friend Joe who committed suicide. He has other tracks that are related (e.g. For Joe and Suicide). But be prepared -they are truly heart-rending.

Ren and Chinchilla (Daisy Bertenshaw) wrote and released the studio version of "How to Be Me" in 2019. This live version was recorded in fall 2021 in Brighton, on the roof of Seaside Studio. It was around the time that they worked together on the studio and live versions of "Chalk Outlines" and went out busking together on Bond Street in Brighton. For Ren, "How to Be Me" is clearly about how he felt after his friend, Joe Hughes, took his own life. Here's the story, in brief. In the early hours of 28 December 2010, Ren got a call that Joe was on the Menai Suspension Bridge (between Anglesey Island and mainland Wales). Joe was depressed and talking about jumping. Ren raced there, but he was too late. Family, friends, and RNLI volunteers searched for a week, but Joe's body was never found. Ren wrote the song "Freckled Angels" in honour of Joe. He released the first version on RU-vid in June 2011, on what would have been Joe's 20th birthday.
