At the age of 64, I've been a white belt for 19 months. I passionately love doing this, but occasionally a very fit and strong beginner can defend my attacks. I have severe osteoarthritis in the hip, but I keep on regardless. with the confidence that eventually I will learn enough technique to be able to hold my own against even a really strong, bigger youngster with less training than I have done.

+Nick Urbank - - Gracie JJ is first and foremost about defending yourself against a violet attacker. We always want to improve, of course, but keep in mind that if they aren’t able to have their way with you...if you have the skills to survive, then you’ve already won. The offensive stuff is the cherry on top.

Started training 1 year ago at 36. Was training 3 days per week for about 5 months and got my first stripe. Went out and competed and placed third. Since then, added 2 more days per week of drilling with some strength and conditioning and it’s upped my game tremendously. Got my second and third stripe at the same time 2 weeks ago, next tournament is in 2 months. Long story short, I thought I started training too old to be any good at this, but it just means I have to work a little harder on the P and T. Great video, Happy New Year!

I agree! I'm 44 and just started 6 months ago. But I would say also that I'm not in shape at all. So I could still raise both parts of my game by putting focus into additional exercise and eating better. Maybe that will be a New year's resolution. Haha ya right. Keep it up professor!

When rolling with a 74 year old at my gym, I try to match his level of physicality; that way it's a match of technique v technique. I get subbed because his technique is better. Don't want to rely on physicality in my 30s as I'd rather have my bad technique exposed and corrected, so I improve faster.

Do you think 62 is too old to begin training?
@KamaJiuJitsu
@KamaJiuJitsu 6 лет назад
it depends. i want to say no, but everyone has differing limits. you would want to definitely check out a school first. if they have several people within 5 years of you, then i'd say go for it. if the next one down is 10-15 years younger, then i'd talk to the professor and see.

In my case I use the strategy to level things up. Now a days a prefer slow pressure pass and never try to follow the fast game of my opponents. My game is slow them down, giving no space and good weight distribution. Oss

Hi Ryan. Thanks. Absolutely agree about importance to develop further technical level. But I would argue to stop focusing on strength development as well while aging. Why not? Maybe it would be good to take more seriously gym (bar bell/ kettle bell), so it would help to slow down decrease in muscle power and will be excellent supplimentation to BJJ. It's only matter how to make correct balance between BJJ & gym activities, so the aged-one could continue BJJ skills development and use benefits of gym. This is no more than my humble opinion.

Cobrinha Charles is 38 years old and won the Pan-Ams, ADCC, European, Worlds and the Brasileiro this year. His technique is sharp and he has maintained solid physicality.

38 isn't old and now that I'm in my 30s it rings truer than ever. However, he's beating guys 10-15 years younger than him in the most prestigious grappling tournaments in the world. That's outstanding. On a personal note, I've rolled with a 54 yr old black belt and got schooled. He wasn't the most athletic, but he had great technique and was 3-4 moves ahead of me. Something I aspire to in 20 years.

I really appreciate your thoughtful videos! I am not a BJJ practitioner, but I like BJJ principles and philosophy and apply them to the combat arts that I do. I am still improving after many years. One, I stay very fit, especially aerobically and anaerobically. Two, I concentrate on improving and maintaining techniques that I can do well, and three, I look for strategies in what i can do that will exploit weaknesses in my opponents. Thank you! . .

Great video! I was wondering if you could do a video about asking higher belts to roll, why that is taboo in some schools and your thoughts.

I would have a hard time keeping up standards and staying motivated if I thought of my BJJ as a game (rather than as a martial practice or lifestyle).

Great video as always. I have a kind of random question which came to me when I noticed you're left handed too. Do you think it's important when you start training to try and be ambidextrous? I've only been training a few weeks now and I've noticed that myself and my training partners tend to lead with their dominant hand for grips and takedowns etc

+ Kama Jiu-Jitsu - - you alluded to it some at the end. What do you think about the “Boyd Belt System” named after the late John Boyd, a black belt of Gracie Torrance and a Vietnam vet? For all who don’t know, he was a black belt who (while in his 60s I believe) expressed concern about no longer being able to submit younger guys of lesser rank. I think it was Rener who explained to him that every decade of age (younger) or 10 lbs of body weight (heavier) between two opponents = a belt level higher. So if “Uncle John” was sparring against a purple belt of similar weight (160-170 lbs I think) but the purple belt was in his 40s, then it would in theory be an even match. The same would apply if their ages were the same but the purple belt was 20 lbs heavier. If I remember the story correctly, this insight along with the realization that these younger guys would kill him in a street fight if he didn’t know Gracie JJ and yet he’s forcing them into a stalemate, which = WIN!

nah, i like our Secret Formula of Jiu-Jitsu better. that boyd belt "formula" doesn't make sense to me (but it may make sense to you). every 10 years equals a belt level? every 20 lbs equals a belt level? shoot, that would mean i'm equivalent to a 165 lb 50-yr old brown belt? or a 155 lb 40-yr old brown belt? or a 135 lb 30-yr old purple belt? damn, this "boyd belt formula" is confusing. frankly, it's not that simple. in the end, just realize when you get older, you're not gonna be able to keep up with the young guns. they know that. even if they don't, you do. even older bulls must step aside and make room for the young bulls coming up, lest they get gored in a fight. think Ali vs Holmes.

Right. It’s just a rule of thumb. People (often, but not always) like for things to be as objective as possible. Sometimes that means inventing a measuring stick that actually can’t be invented. I’m a physical therapist that mostly deals with older, sicker folks: “How long is it going to take me to recover?” One that I use often is: “a day of bed rest takes a week of training to regain your strength.” Not necessarily true but it expresses a reality and makes things more quantifiable for folks, but I see your point too. Nevertheless, I would probably change the 10 lbs to 15-20 lbs.

I stand corrected. They say 20 lbs or a decade of age difference = a belt level. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FGk_urw1_hA.html
