Well actually kids, Green Day is alt rock and their old stuff had some punkish influences. Dead Kennedys are Punk, The Misfits were technically horror-punk and Blink 182's old stuff was Punk Rock, their later stuff was Pop-Punk and their ST and Neighbourhoods were Alternative

"Pop" punk is def different from melodical punk BUT FYI green day was and has identified as pop punk multiple times in interviews especially in the mid-late 90's but when they first started out in the 80's they didn't have that genre they were just a lighter more understandable and melodically based punk hell even. Folks from black flag and the casualties and rancid have said they were punk in fact more punk.rockers from the 70's and 80's would even classify Nirvana as punk rock because grunge was genre created to describe that type of music at the time 5sos is a boy band like backstreet boys with guitars

mainstream just means popular music. Punk music is a VERY popular genre. Pop also means popular, but it isn't just upbeat, happy music we hear now. Our definition of pop today is different from the pop music 50 years in the future. Pop music is music that is catchy, and grabs from different genres. There are country, rap and electronic influences in today's pop music. Punk is.. well you know what punk is. Pop-Punk is those two things combined. Catchy music with punk influences.

5sos is a pop band. The only reason people insist that they're pop punk is because they're too big and special to admit they actually like some pop music. That or they are super into pop music and want to feel cool because they listen to a real band. The biggest reason they're considered pop punk is because they don't fit into the whole boy band mold as far as appearances go. If you wanna find some pop punk bands, so you can learn a little about it, you can check out Man Overboard or The Wonder Years :)
