I’ve literally never played this game but i’ve seen this dolphin thing so much that I feel like it’s necessary to know how to defeat it, I don’t know when I would encounter it given I don’t play or intend to play the game but I just feel like my life will at some point depend on knowing how to defeat totsugeki spam
May player here too, and a good opponent will just let you gamble it away, you know that, right? It will work a total of 001 times against someone barely proficient at fighting games.
Well it's gotta be good since its an overdrive move and it costs bar, you know. Which one has access to 2 times per round on average. You wanted it to suck or be useless? Not to mention she could just aswell use said bar to RRC and still be her turn. Just bait it out and leave her naked or dont press buttons when she has resources and let her gamble them away.
I think it would also be great to have an option where the attacking player turns red or blue when blocked to communicate whether they're plus or minus on block. The intensity of the color could also be decided by how many frames it is. I think it would be a good way to introduce that idea to people who are new to fighting games without having to look up frame data.
@@BobtheX She actually does have a slightly different voice line for both. When she hits the slash dolphin it’s a very fast totsugeki but when she hits heavy dolphin she says it for longer. My friend mains May and it’s easy to distinguish when you’re used to it. But I still think having a visual cue would be better
I mean if you're getting combod it doesn't matter which version she does. If you are on defense it absolutely matters though and you should be looking out for it, particularly after a string of normals when you KNOW she is gonna do a dolphin.
this is late i know, but the fast one is 7fr and the "slow" one is about 25frames. well within the common person's reaction window but it is still fairly quick. I know personally i have trouble reliably reacting to moves around 22ish fr so don't feel bad for not noticing right away
@@AstralTaurus I will say that since then I've actually started to stuff the dolphin, and the last couple of days I've done it more than expected tbh. Of course then you have to not press for fast dolphin, but you're usually in block stun by the time you would lol. It's still hard but it doesn't always wreck me.
@@AstralTaurus The fast dolphin may as well be instant since you cannot react to 7 frames. It's not about reacting to the slow one per-say, it's about expecting a dolphin if you see the May randomly down backing and preemptively sticking out a fast normal. The only time you have to "react" to the slow one is if it's in a block string (where you can stuff it)/after you already blocked it since you definitely cannot hit a button after blocking it, and it's more of a retrospect thing of, that dolphin HAD startup thus it was the slow one, as apposed to the one that is basically instant. Also fast dolphin is negative on hit, so throwing out a quick button preemptively isn't very punishing even if she punishes you. Just don't throw out a slow move that can get clipped early and lead into a counter hit, because then it's party time for the May (I mean, she gets like a 2S>Dolphin which is good poke damage or 5K>3K which is knockdown). Note, good May's will hide their charging cleverly, but good May's don't spam dolphin, and there is no quick and easy way to beat a "good" player anyways since they will be responding to your responses with layers of strategy. At that point it's up to you to find an answer to what they are doing (though if you cannot deal with dolphin spam, then they will probably dolphin spam you).
Just started playing online as May, went on a massive winning streak and reached floor 10 with dolphin spamming. It's laughable at how abusable this is at the lower ranks, people don't know what to do against it.
That's due to people not knowing how to play the game in general. It's still early access. I also got to 10 with her basically only with fundamentals and barely knowing the game's systems proper. I played on the safe side, dolphin only on confirm and still I got 6P'd several times (beats it clean). So yeah, as time passes it's highly doubtful it will stay like this. It's not that strong at all and a very easy read depending on positioning and the situation. You just know its coming. Or should.
@@tiguilherman_plays Made it to Celestial floor, starting at floor 10 I've noticed people are catching on and knowing how to counter it. Yet some people still do have trouble with it even at the highest ranks. If I realize my opponent knows how to counter than I adjust and counter him back, and wait for him to whiff his 6P for a punish. It makes them scared to consistently throw out that 6P.
Just here to say I'm glad your channel is growing. I'm a long-time lurker of your content. Your genuine passion for fighting games and your laid-back and chill attitude about everything shows in every video. Keep doing you JM, I'll watch this 'til you hit 1 mill and beyond.
Yeah, dealing with Dolphin spam is the least of the issues with fighting May. The dolphin spam is really really annoying but there are many moves that may players have to make up for any of Totsugeki's weakness. You block the dolphin or you counter the dolphin, That is great! However this only blocks one moveset, and believe me may player's will use dirty dirty tricks to make you think. Your free from sea world, only to punish you then assault you with it all over again. Remeber when fighting May, dolphin spam helps her, but if its a component may player they will trick you with Tostugeki spam. Because they know you will counter/block it. Also fun fact May has the most disjointed hit attacks then any other character in Guilty Gear Strive.
I don't get it, she is only -5 on block and most characters only have P that is that fast and it won't reach. Does that mean it isn't punishable it is just a turn switch? Man that is rough if so, so much pressure for like, no risk.
Turn switch. You have to chase her because she will be out of range. Sometimes they will throw out a attack if they notice you charging in. its a small 5050
More than Totsugeiki I loved how you briefly showed other examples of this moves, since like you said there are a lot of them and it is hard sometimes to realise which ones without labing
Dude, this was so helpful. I'm really happy that you're playing Strive now and not just DBZ. Tbh I burnt out on DBFZ forever ago but your new Strive videos have brought me back to your channel.
I just saw Justin reviewing this. I haven’t had to deal with it yet and it’s something I will hit the lab with. So glad they didn’t launch with bazillion characters so while its young I can actually lab stuff. Nice video and thank for your work.
I just played against a lvl 300+ May when I'm just just a little lvl 70 Potemkin. I lost 27 times, and only won 1 round (not match, just one round). It felt like no matter what I did, nothing was safe. Her air attacks ALL counter mine (literally nothing I can do in the air would harm her ever), her anchor hurts Pot's arms whenever they clash, and the dolphin spam comes out so insanely fast that not even low punch comes out fast enough. But the deal with this that bothers me even more is that when I interrupt her dolphin somehow, she's just barely out of reach for me to do any significant damage, meanwhile May gets her meter built up so quickly that she can just throw whales at me all day long. You say that the 6P is a good counter move, but Potemkin's 6P feels so damn sluggish, it never ever comes out in time to stop her, and after her first hit it's already too late and I'm in the corner, taking half my HP in damage. Please, tell me there's a better way to handle this, I don't want to abandon my main or dodge Mays.
Always play'd with May in GG, with Strive I could say they kinda "Charlottaified" her? Also people I fight struggle a lot with the normal down slash, getting them all the time, and after that... well, you know.
I will never play May online in her current state now. My goal will now be to learn to counter op Dolphin strategies and destroy scrubs who spam it. Make them scared to even attempt using the Dolphin so they have to actually start playing the game. Then everyone can have fun again on more equal ground. Always the same. New game, scrubs spam unbalanced op strategies for a while until every other player universally knows the counters and the strategy is made invalid. This applies to most all pvp gaming.
People complaining about May never played xrd, no longer do you have to deal with the otter's slow screen control bouncing ball or trap dolphins. And that walrus spiking a beachball is no replacement for the otter in anyway, would trade it back for the otter in 5 seconds.
As an Anji player i'm still figuring out how to deal with May players. The best thing I could do after the S dolphin is S -> Fujin. But even then it's blockable and really just a way to regain a bit of momentum. However I can't contest May's normal attacks as Anji as most of them time I'm the one getting counter hit. And it kinda feels unfair as an Anji player that May's moves are mostly safe, while Anji's are risky. UPDATE: Apparently what I just said above doesn't work. After blocking the S dolphin, May can back dash and dodge Anji's standing S. And there's nothing in Anji's arsenal that can reach May when she does that. They really need to nerf her dolphin.
This video just confirms how broken the move is. The game is good (probably a B- imo), but the dolphin is easily the worst part of it as far as match-ups go. It's not so bad if you character can actually reach her after the blocked dolphin. Characters like Faust however are forced to sit there and hold all of that though.
As a may player I am In pain. They took away all the tricks with half of her special moves, we don’t wanna do this it’s just what we have to do, why Jm why
Had early access thanks to pre-ordering but, ironically, almost no time to play the game yet due to work, lol :( Looking forward to NOT getting dolphined though ;D
man its one thing to be able to interrupt that move in training mode but I don't think I could ever pull that off in an actual match when that is one of a million potential things I need to be looking for. I don't get how people do this.
just remember this, she has to charge the move, if she is walking forward she doesnt have it charged, so assume wherever she inst walking forward (attacking you with a normal included) she is buffering the move and can do it at any time, so throw out buttons like a fS or 6p preemptively to catch her, or jump and whiff punish.
the dolphin is cute and a great move but, some people using it are just crap. The day that goldlewis was released i went online dont even knowing how to use it but i was having fun learning on the go until I encountered a certain guy using may (Corgi I will not forget your crimes) he started to spam totsugeki as soon the figth started and was pretty much the only thing he did. totsugeki cheese players are the only ones that i couldnt stop.
See my problem isn't that I can't recognize May's dolphin strenght, my problem is that S dolphin is only 2 frames slower than her jab which, maybe I'm slow but i feel that is impossible to react, and it's -5 which yes is punishable, if it wasn,t because she lands far enough to not be within jab range. FYI for those who don't know: pretty much every jab in the game takes 5 frames to activate (except for sol which is 4 frames because Sol, and Faust is 6 because fuck Faust among probably others) So no i do not buy that May's S Totsugeki is "unsafe"
also btw remember she HAS to charge the move, if she is walking forward she doesn't have it charged, always remember that, just assume that if she inst moving forward she is buffering totsugeki.
The problem is with heavy, you are afraid of fast one so you are just waiting to block it, but you don't realzie on time that it is heavy one so you don't move forward and quickly attack her, so after heavy you are locked into blocking her next attacks. So anyway the heavy version is almost safe because while doing it you are in safe medium distance position and opponent will not know in time if it's the fast one or heavy one. If she hit your guard she is in safe distance anyway. It is the easiest move to overuse. It is hard to realize that, so the move is automaticly top tier, and should get some nerf, maybe remove of heavy one or making a lot different animation to make it clear which one she is doing. So I think only pro players will know how to counter it. It will be hell for new commers and also for medium players, they may rage quit the game because of someone spamming those moves, which is not fun and fair.
Even pros have said this move is too strong,Justin Wonggg himself said it multiple times & not in a Joking way,all these youtubers & May mains in the comments who can't beat the move either are just talking out of their asses
Cant wait for people to learn how to play against day 1 may so i can start actually going for command grab and more interesting mixups. Floor 8 and people still be falling for s.dolphin~s.dolphin on block lmao.
