Federer’s backhand in the past 3 years has improved inexplicably, no longer his weak shot. Watch Australian Open 2017, Nadal literally couldn’t keep up with his backhands the whole match, same goes for Wawrinka in the semis.

The racquet change was 2015- the colour changed in 2017 This is why there’s an argument for 2017 to be Federer’s peak- yes his forehand/movement was superior in his “peak” years but actually in the first half of 2017 his backhand improvements gave him an even more complete baseline game and he was more effective coming forwards than ever. Admittedly his backhand hasn’t ever reached those heights again but it’s now a far more offensive shot and a real weapon when he’s playing good (5-1 against Nadal since 2015, and 5-0 on grass/hard courts) his volleys remain incredible and he still gets a huge amount of cheap points with serve and volley- even on clay. The one shot that hasn’t changed (for better or worse) over the years is his serve, he hits it at exactly the same average speed (123mph) and still can dominate with it...

I’d like to add one here. You should’ve good passing shots in your arsenal. Federer likes to come to the net at crunch times to close the point quickly and that is where one needs to score. Novak has been doing this for years now. Also Federer doesn’t like rallies, so try to keep him in one and you can squeeze an unforced error

All good points. Federer likes to front run so an early break puts him at rest and he can rely on his serve. When you keep the score close to him though, he can break down. Not vs regular mortals - just the top 3. But Fed can get nervy, surely contributing to his B/P conversion. His backhand has improved though and no-one will forget his re-emergence at the start of 2017.

High bouncing backhands, as it's the most difficult of shots for one-handed backhand players.

One thing I think you missed is the role of topspin. Federer absolutely loves people hitting the ball hard and flat against him, so he can reflect the pace back against his opponent. It helps explain his success against the likes of Roddick and Blake. Players like Cañas, Nadal and Djokovic can get the ball up high, particularly on Federer's backhand, pushing him back and making him have to muscle the ball to generate pace. He's nowhere near as good from that position.

I remember in the early 2000's David Nalbandian (who was a bit of a pushover for any other Top 30 player) would inexplicably beat Federer 9 out of 10 times (usually a grand slam semifinal) consistently

The video is very interesting and well made. However since 2017 I think Federer made some adjustments to the way he hits the backhand, I think closer to the ball. It would be nice to see how his current backhand does against Novak and Rafa.

Great video, although I would reduce that 1% to 0,01%. The few relative weaknesses he has have been viciously exploited by Nadal and Djokovic over the years. Hitting deep into his backhand corner has allowed them to put pressure on Roger once his 1st serve percentage starts to drop . But I think that another weakness that you haven't mentioned is his return of serve. Time and time again, I've seen him not take enough risk with his return when he's break point up. Just blocking it or hitting a short slice has cost him a lot of missed opportunities. Still, when he's playing well, he's the best. He's miles ahead of everyone else in terms of quality.

This video is a bag full of mixed emotions.. first, the visualisation is great.. even if I am not a Tennis player by any means (I love tennis as a sport though), I enjoyed it. Then one of my all time favourite atheletes comes in the game.. Roger Federer. I was literally jumping with excitement! Then I reminded myself the tilte of this video and I was like, "Oh Sh*t!" Then he started explaining the weakness of the maestro, Roger Federer. It kind of broke my heart to see that. But then again the visualisation in the beginning came to my mind. Then the end statement, 1% chance. Man oh man, I didn't know if should be happy and smile or be sad and angry at this video. I'm still confused after watching it thrice tbh 😂 But you know what I feel is, it's very very difficult to beat RF.. only some of the best in world tennis could achieve that because, he adapts and molds his style of play according to his opponents. How can someone beat that?

Your insight is valid And i would like to add that the majority of his losses stem from a combination of two factors: a low percentage on the 1st serve and/or a high nr of unforced errors. The infallibility of the classic 1-2 punch is based on a solid serve and a decisive forehand and if those are not working , then his confidence will be low and that’s when you will start seeing the weakness on his backhand as the grinders will make it harder for him to take the ball early.

I could beat fed. He'd beat me probably 3/10 times, but I'd hold the 30-9 h2h. His backhand is so weak. All I'd have to do is hit a heavy topspin ball to his BH and approach and finish at the net. Easy wins. The 9 wins over me would've been when I was injured. He's free. Can't believe this guy held #1 that long.

You can’t beat talent... RF is almost unbeatable in his prime.

Easy..just be Djokovic, Nadal or Murray. They are all better players than Federer and all have winning records against him. Simple. Federer is definitely "NOT" the GOAT.

the analysis seems good one... but i feel its all about whats in his head during the match. i personally felt roger soaks lot of pressure during crunch moments as if he has to win for somebody else sake. His australian open final in 2017 showed how much he changed mentally and tactically. djokovic keeps winning from the jaws of defeat because he is so strong mentally. i guess coaching federer is all about giving him some mental conditioning and keeping him fit. He has all the beautifull and powerfull arsenal that a tennis lover would love to watch.
