My writing "superpower" that I'm working on is crafting realistic and engaging dialogue. That's been one of my top complaints when I read books now - so many good authors with world building and emotion and character and then BOOM dialogue just falls flat to me. So that's what I'm trying to craft

Thanks for your insights into what many of us find to be a very difficult and frustrating industry. As a writer who has had multiple deals with traditional publishers, including Penguin and St Martins, I’d be interested in hearing your perspective on maybe the most frustrating aspect of all: publishers who acquire and publish your book, but don’t sell it. By that I mean they don’t make more than a token effort to get reviews, advertise, promote word of mouth, etc. Instead, they seem to expect the author to do all that for them. Which is ironic, considering that authors seek the traditional publishing route-and give up a lot of potential royalty income-because those houses supposedly have resources we as individual authors lack. Why do so many published books get “orphaned” by their publishers?

I have asked a successful indie author what she did, and now I'm reading few books on how to write better and how to make ads on Facebook and Amazon. The latter are the problems I have. At least it's an cheaper option than some expensive course which seems to help most authors. I keep on writing and wont give up that easily. I know there is always something to learn and your videos have been a big help too.

I read in my genre and I underline words I don't know or am not confident to use yet in my work. I then put the words down in a separate notebook and try to learn them. I'm not a native English speaker and there are usually around 3 words on EVERY PAGE that are new to me. It's a bit intimidating and it makes me feel like my vocabulary is very limited. But all I can do is read and keep learning. I really wish to be traditinally published in English🙂
@bodine219
@bodine219 2 года назад
You'll get there. I'm in a writing group with a few non-native English speakers and a couple of them write with more fluency than most of the native speakers. Surprisingly, most of the trouble doesn't seem to be vocabulary. Tense switching is a lot more common, but that's something an editor can help with. Your youtube comment sounds like a native speaker.

Really helpful video. Thank you. I have traditionally published three books in the non-fiction, dog behavior, genre. Besides my knowledge of the field, I discovered my writing superpower is the anecdote. So I am starting a narrative nonfiction work of stories that will convey important themes of the human canine relationship.

As usual, extremely helpful tips! As I come closer to making contact through your website, I am stricken with a nearly paralyzing fear that encompasses many of those you already discussed, and moreover, sadly, deeply aware of how 1 comment made 40 years ago has massively damaged a lifetime of hope for success. It's strange how sometimes we don't realize how broken we really are until someone points it out. But you can't fix something until you realize it is broken, and therein lies the rebirth of hope. So, thank you for that. :D

Thanks for the tips. I especially liked the idea of not being discouraged about a book not selling as well as hoped. My first novel (and only so far) has not done much of anything as far as sales. I'm hopeful that it will reach a broader audience in time. Keep doing what you do. It does help! I have incorporated several tips from your previous videos in other projects I've undertaken.

I've noticed that word of mouth is a key figure to many bestsellers. In fact, the way that I first heard about Harry Potter, Twilight, and The Hunger Games when they were brand new was by word of mouth. It's one of those things you can't control, no matter how much you market.

Hi Alyssa! Your videos have been a tremendous help as I learn about traditional publishing! Do you happen to have any tips specific to poetry within the traditional publishing landscape? If you do, I would love to see a video on that!
@AlyssaMatesic
@AlyssaMatesic 2 года назад
I'm glad they helped! I haven't worked with poetry before, so I don't have a video out on poetry in the traditional publishing industry. The biggest tip I know is that many small independent presses offer poetry contests, where poets can send in book length manuscripts for potential publication + a cash prize! So that's something to look out for.

I listen to audio books every night to sleep, when driving, etc. If you don't have time to read you can make time. Also your public library probably has an app where w a library card you can check out audio books free! Just fyi if you can't afford to buy audio books etc

To me, the advice to read, is...only for certain authors. If ypu dont know what you want to write, reading to get know what sells is good. But for me, i already know what i want to write. I dont want to write what sells, i want to write the stories that fill my head.

This was really encouraging, and I think there is one other thing worth mentioning. Just because your book might not sell well now, it doesn't mean it won't sell well later on. The only book that comes to mind that turned into a movie is Dune. From memory, it's a very old book, but picked up popularity as a movie later on. I'm not sure what the difference in time frame was for other well known titles, e.g. Harry Potter, Hobbit, LOTR, etc. But they are there. Heck, technically Disney took a lot of the tales from the Brothers Grimm series and adapted them to the classics we love today. So don't lose heart if the initial reaction isn't what you expect! As for 'writing superpowers', I think I've only just recently found them. There seem to be two: 1. Educational and entertaining - the books I write tend to have some type of theme that the reader can learn and apply in real life, but it lets them explore the theme safely within the book to help them understand it; usually something philosophical in nature. The first novel I wrote demonstrated the importance of critical thinking through the characters, and the importance of not taking bias at face-value. 2. "Deep characters" - I find that I end up writing and wanting to know the backstories and consequences of the actions of the characters, all the whys about that character. For one in particular, I actually ended up in tears writing the chapter, and I was really heartbroken for what that character went through. Tears came out again even on reviewing and editing it.
@AlyssaMatesic
@AlyssaMatesic 2 года назад
Yes, thank you for the Dune example! Publishing is a fickle business, and what seems to be selling low now can become a household name if you give it the time it needs.
