The Japanese who passed the New York state bar exam this time entered the LLM of a university without studying law in his home country, and for some reason he was transferred to JD after that, and finally passed the examination on the third attempt. Many Japanese people have doubts about this fact, so I hope that you will take up this issue from the perspective of the American people. There is no doubt that viewers from Japan will be interested and the number of RU-vid views will increase explosively, so please consider it.

I got the book “getting to maybe” I’m planning on both being a lawyer and a doctor. I’m planning on getting multiple degrees and doctorates. But that’s just me. I also plan on going into the military after getting my first two degrees (planning on double majoring for both my law and medical degrees). And than after getting perhaps a masters in both I will go into military. (Should take me around 5-6 years, if I’m capable counting residency for being a medical doctor of course, and perhaps an apprenticeship with a law firm if that’s possible, but not necessary of course). Maybe just get a Juris Doctor degree in law, and an md so that I can become a general practitioner doctor.

Hello! First of all I would like to thank you for creating these whole series of law school related videos😊 It really helped me a lot! I'm a university student in South Korea who is considering going to a law school in States so the information that I can get access to are sadly relatively limited :( Anyways, If you don't mind, there are a few questions that I would like to ask. I know that the two most important factors in getting into a lawschool are your LSAT score & GPA but are there any extra-curricular activities that you believe would benefit in terms of applying or maybe even getting through the law school years? Also, I already took a semester off(this was basically to rest) and I'm currently planning to take one more for an internship. Do you think that it will be still worth to have some sort of work experience while graduating a year late compared to other students? Thank you so much in advance! (P.S I'm a non-native speaker so there might be some mistakes. Hope you'll understand it)
@Learnlawbetter
@Learnlawbetter 4 года назад
First, thanks for watching--glad that the videos are helping non-English speakers! Taking some time off to work is a great idea because it takes into account brain development. Human brains don't fully develop until we reach the age of 25. So by taking some time off after college, you are allowing your brain to get closer to peak development. Also, having some work experience will allow you to make more connections to the law--it will be less theoretical for you. As to extracurricular activities, many people do college debate. This can help you with developing research skills and learning to think quickly. Also, you need to practice your English. This means reading as much as you can and also writing. I've seen many foreign students fail because they just can't keep up with the reading, or on a timed exam not being able to write quickly enough.
@davidsoto4394
@davidsoto4394 Год назад
Professor, why do they not do the charcter and fitness thing first when a undergraduate who has earned their degree first and applies to law school it seems more logical and practical? Disclaimer: what I wrote here today is not legal advice of any kind whatsoever, it is not intended to be was not intended to be, and should not be interpreted as such. I am not a lawyer. I have never and would never claim to be one.
@Learnlawbetter
@Learnlawbetter Год назад
Because there is no guarantee that someone will graduate from law school. Also, many law students don’t know what State in which they plan to take the bar exam. Finally, if there are issues, each state bar would need to determine whether the problem should keep someone from practicing law. A few states have allowed convicted murderers to join the bar.

The key is to keep learning as much as you can about the law and law school. The more you learn, the more you can determine if becoming a lawyer is right for you. In the US there are several "value" law schools, where someone can attend for a low price. Some of my students this year are paying nothing for their legal education as they work a few hours at the university to cover their tuition.

This is very interesting and makes me wish I had done more with my life. I realize at 24, it could still be done. It is a little more difficult since I have wasted the last six years of my life. It is certainly something to think about. Is there any chance you can continue this with a part II? What usually happens once a person becomes a lawyer? I am sure they don't immediately start their own law firm. How does the career path usually work? At what point does a person decide if they want to become a criminal lawyer or civil lawyer? It appears there are many opportunities as a lawyer.

Great and informative video! For those applicants who have graduate degrees, do law schools consider graduate degrees (and graduate GPAs) when determining student admissions? Or, do they only consider undergraduate degrees and undergraduate GPAs when determining student admissions?
@Learnlawbetter
@Learnlawbetter 4 года назад
The only GPA that is examined is undergraduate GPA. However, a law school will look at a graduate degree if the law school is very selective in whom they admit (e.g., Yale and Harvard), or also at students with marginal grades and an improved track record in a graduate program.

I have a question, my last 3 years in high school were horrible, i have a horrible 2.9 gpa, im planning on going to the state college, would that affect me on getting to law school? If i do good in college, would that help me with the law school admissions and all that? What does undergraduate gpa means?

The college you attend doesn’t matter as much as it did decades ago. This is because the US News ranking system, which only looks at GPA.

You submit every grade to LSAC, the organization that administers the LSAT. They then create a uniform GPA that every law school uses. They don’t care if a class was hard or easy, which is why those that took easy classes have an advantage.

To enter law school in the United States you first need an undergraduate degree in any subject and score well on the LSAT. I've had students that received their college degrees in other countries before, so that's not a problem. The main difficulty for foreign students is English. Our exams are timed essays, and that is difficult for some from other countries. This means you need to work hard now mastering English, so read as much as you can and practice.

@Learnlawbetter

It depends on which State you live in because each of our 50 States regulate the practice of law in their jurisdiction. In many States you would need to earn a JD, but in others no.

@@Learnlawbetter This may sound strange, but is it possible that I will graduate with a bachelor's degree in international law and enroll in an LLM in the United States, but after graduation will I be able to enroll in a JD and will there then be a valid LLM?
@Learnlawbetter
@Learnlawbetter 3 года назад
It sounds like you are asking whether you can practice law in the US, with the JD from a US law school the traditional way most people become practicing lawyers. Each of our 50 States determines the requirements for practicing law within their borders. If your international law degree would allow you to practice law in your country, then some States would accept that degree without a JD. But don’t forget, work visas are hard to get, and US law firms rarely hire lawyers without a JD.

Learn Law Better , hi I’m a 26 year old guy and I live in Florida . People have told me my whole entire life that i would make a great lawyer ( I’m a good talker , I can win just about any argument, this & that , lots of reasons etc. ) . I’m just wondering tho does it always take 7 years ? And I’ve had a few drug charges , 1 was expunged , 1 I got a felony but wasn’t convicted , and I also got a dui ( but it was 7 years ago . With all that being said do you think I have a chance or what’s some advice you can give me ? , anyways tho great video I’m happy I watched it :) !!
@Learnlawbetter
@Learnlawbetter 4 года назад
Sounds like you are doing better-congratulations. The past problems with the law are barriers, but not insurmountable. What the bar examiners will want to know is what you are like today. As to educational requirements you first need a college degree and then the JD. Some law schools, like Northern Illinois University, have 3-3 programs. That means if you are in their undergraduate program and meet certain GPA and other requirements, you can complete college in three years. That takes it down from seven to six years. The key is to start with the first class and focus on getting good grades. Maybe that’s at a community college. Start with the first class and see what happens. Thanks for watching.

Law schools want to make sure you have a bachelor's degree that is similar to a US bachelor's degree. Generally, most European degrees qualify, even though they are three year programs. Each law school will make that determination for themselves.
