I also mention some nursing interview tips, but let me know if you guys want a separate video on a critical care new grad nursing interview. 😊💉

I don’t think people realize how important it is to relocate. If you want an ICU job you can find one if you simply move. I received a Level 1 ICU offer without even trying. Hospitals are so desperate you simply have to be willing to move. My part of the country does not offer critical care new grad, so I simply applied to an area where I know new grad critical care is the norm. Guess what? No effort on my part and 0 preparations and I got a job offer that I could’ve never imagined.

I needed this. I’m in a county that is saturated and the cost of living is expensive. 3 hours away, the cost of living is less. I’m moving for that purpose, with hopes of an ICU residency taking me.

So I’m an LPN for 16 hrs. YES. 16. However the last 8 have been in home care in New York City, with every patient on a ventilator, GTube, Foley, wound care. They come out usually from the ICU or RICU. Most are train wrecks. I LOVE VENT PATIENTS. I actually train many nurses who come out of school into my agency. Anyway I’m in RN school, about 1 yr till Im done. In NYC you need your BSN for the big hospital jobs, which I will get for sure! Im staying in school until it done. What I want is to find a hospital that will take me in with just my associates degree, with the promise to get my RN. I hope I can find one!

Our preceptor positions were chosen for us and I unfortunately did not get an ICU position. I have been so upset that I didn’t get that opportunity. Also due to COVID, the hospitals did not allow externship positions in critical care. Now I feel like it’s almost impossible for me to snag an ICU position.

Awesome advice! But I do have a question, what advice could you give someone who already works in ICU as a UC/Tele Tech and that just passed her boards, whos dream job is to be an ICU nurse? What should she do to get the ball rolling during the craziness of the hospital? Thanks in advance
@NurseChao
@NurseChao 4 года назад
Hi Joanne! Congratulations on passing your boards! That's amazing!! 😊I know it's hard right now because many hospitals are in a "hiring freeze" for a lot of new grads which is frustrating because the hospitals are pretty short staffed! I would say talk to the manager or director (whoever hires for that unit) and express your interest and see what availability they have to hire! Since you already work at the hospital they should hopefully give you preference to other new grads, but definitely let them know you're interested so you can gauge the availability! I would say apply to as many hospitals as possible to see if they're hiring in the ICU and then reach out to the managers to express your interest!

I would have to move to another location to be a new grad ICU RN. My student Debt is near $160K. I have signed on to work in L1 ED with sign on bonus of $26K after taxOver 2 years of being in the hospital system (do not have to stay in ED). I think it would make sense to stay in the ED and transfer to ICU after 6 months to still get the bonus and live with parents for the time being. Does anyone agree? Aspirations are to be a CRNA so ICU is what I need.

I've been looking for a Icu job but they all either want you to be a Icu nurse already or to be a step down or med surg nurse for 1-2years.even if you have precepted
@NurseChao
@NurseChao 4 года назад
Yeah unfortunately most places won't hire new grads straight into the ICU, and they typically prefer nurses that have some experience already. 😞If you're set on the ICU, working in med surg or step down for 6 months-1 year or 2 years wouldn't be a bad idea! It makes going to the ICU a lot easier since hospitals often prefer to hire internally!
@Astronomical1
@Astronomical1 4 года назад
@@NurseChao thanks...I'm starting to realize that.. a friend of mine said once she got her 1-2yrs experience.. everyone and thier mama called her for a job. Even places that rejected her in the past.. no employer wants to be the first job to give you the 1st year exp
@NurseChao
@NurseChao 4 года назад
Astronomical 1 Yes!! Once you have experience it gives you so much more freedom! It’s annoying that many hospitals don’t want to give chances to new grads when in my opinion it sometimes new grads do better in the ICU since they get to be molded by that unit right away!

Heres what I am not agreeing with: when i was in clinicals, i had nurses not only teaching me patient things, but, also the reality of things. And there is basically a game they all end up playing to get higher wages. There for 6 months, leave to higher pay, there for 8 months, repeat cycle, until finally they are happy. This of course after they tell this lie of i want to be there, team player, etc... where as I am a person who is willing to be loyal, not play games, and yes, i need ICU for CRNA school. I'm not going to play the games. So, wouldn't it be better to know the honesty up front, and me stay as long as it takes to get accepted without playing the games???
@dylanmills5878
@dylanmills5878 4 года назад
I'm in my 1st semester of a 12 month ABSN program and am dead set on starting out in the icu as a new grad. What exactly is precepting, is that just basically shadowing? And is that something your school sets up for you or is that something you do on your own?
@NurseChao
@NurseChao 4 года назад
That's awesome!! Yes you totally can do it!! Precepting is a little more than shadowing! It's typically in your last semester of nursing school, and you get to do a clinical rotation in a specific unit. As a student nurse you have a designated RN you're with (your preceptor), and you do as much as you can to have a full load of patients like a registered nurse (within your scope of practice under your RN of course). It depends on the school, but I believe most schools will set it up for you! 😊

How did you know you wanted to be an ICU NURSE?
@NurseChao
@NurseChao 4 года назад
Roxanne Noriega honestly I didn’t know what type of nurse I wanted to be until my last semester of nursing school! That’s when I did my preceptorship in the medical icu. I did a long stretch with my preceptor and we had the same patient every day. He was on the ventilator and on vasopressors and came confused speaking garbled sentences. We were able to get his vasopressors off and he got off the ventilator my second day with him. He was confused and combative at first, but after trying out different treatments/medications with him, he spoke his first non-garbled sentence since being admitted to the hospital. 😭 he was downgraded from the ICU 1-2 days later. This experienced inspired me to become an ICU nurse because I felt like I could make a big difference in patients’ lives! 🥰💉
