Ummm actually Kim Jung Gi is the god of art not Sam and y’all nene to bow down to the true art god, Kim Jung Gi is art god. (this is a joke obviously, but in all honesty, I wouldn’t say he’s the art god; art king sure, but not god)
How to be Art God: 1. Put white circle on black background. This creates contrast, a range of values, and a creative approach because it leaves the viewer to use their imagination. It doesn’t over complicate the scene and the black background creates a perfect outline for the object of the circle. Bam. You’re welcome
Seeing Sam's palette while he moved around the canvas was extremely helpful in helping me understand what he was talking about. For sure one of the best art teachers on RU-vid.
Love this video! Also, something that guweiz does that makes values look so on point is that he first paints in greyscale and adds colors after with layer modes. It's really helpful when you paint something that relies more on values than colors. But you can definitely do it without that step, or just have a b&w mask that you can toggle on and off while painting, I found that works for me. Thank you Sam for this study!❤
Ahh I've never seen a video of yours within the first hour, especially on a guru exposition video! 😍 Anyway video commentary: I think my main problem with my art is I try to jump into values and lightsources too early in the first stages which is why it never gets a semirealistic look I like that Wlop, Axsens, Nixeu, and so many others have mastered over time. I love when you do vids like this because the dissections really gives others an idea of how they should review their work ❤️❤️ Question: Could you do an Art God video for Yuumei? If you've seen her art style it's very unique and I believe you'd have fun "exposing" her secrets lol ✨
Some of your illustrations really get to my heart because it's almost like looking in some parts of my diary when I was younger and it's like a memory came back alive 😭
Thank you for giving me motivation to draw, your work is amazing. You’ve really made me want to draw especially after my studio closed. The community is super grateful to you❤️
I love this series of yours! For the next artist could you do one on Yuumeiart? They're art style is so stunning, beyond words. It would be interesting to see you replicate their style. Keep up the great work Sam❤
I was floored when I saw you were going to apply your analysis to your own work, including the real-time commentary while you worked. To borrow the turn of phrase used in this video, you, Sam, are an art god in your own right. Thank you so much for sharing all your hard work! 💖💖💖
I'm loving this How to become Art God videos! I can kinda tell why I like an artist's art, but when I watch and listen to your analysis it's so much more clear and I learn so much more!
I love how you observe and explain in these videos. So helpful and informative. I really find their style and techniques interesting, and I learn more. Also, you're an Art God too and we like you!
Thanks so much for the breakdown! It really helped a lot, especially since I am trying to get back into art and further than just crappy doodles on papers
Hi Sam. I didn't expect your video went this way. Often times, people highlight other artists and talk about what consider good from them from a technical pov, just like you did in the first half of the video, and that's it. But seeing how you also admitted you don't feel comfortable working in a certain way (using darker values), which in itself demands to be very humble to accept, and then _you actually went_ and did it... I was so not expecting that. "I'm really going against all of my instincts", because you knew it was going to be uncomfortable, but you still did it. I'm always so scared of trying something that I'm afraid it will end up bad. So seeing an artist like you in an uncomfortable position, but then you dare to challenge your own instincts, it's actually the best inspiration to actually push my own limits and go out of my comfort zone. Can't thank you enough for this video, it really caused a positive impact. 😀
Wow- I couldn’t tell it was gonna be a plane, that was awesome!! Another cool artist you should REALLY check out is Tamaytka. I cant express how much I am in love with her style!!! she has inspired me to do cool earth tones too :)
I took Krenz's class and heard him talked about Guweiz and then the day after I saw this video! :o Guweiz really has a unique way on coloring, there is so much to learn to become an art god
You can just paint with your usual range of shading and then apply a sub-layer to adjust the intensity of the dark values, as much as you like, 'overlay' and 'multiply' are the best digital buddies.
I absolutely love your style, and watching you having a go at Guweiz' artwork yielded an amazing result. Wish I had an iota of the talent and patience you and other creators have. I'm only adept at drawing tornados :P
That looks like such a fun study to try! Doing it on digital would so much easier than reduction painting on a canvas from black because once you swipe it off, it's gone 😱
The progress is amazing to see knowing Guweiz only started drawing in 2014 and had major struggled in learning everyday and now they're on of the best :)
Not gonna lie, when i first saw your work i got depressed as much as I got motivated. For you sir i started working digitally regularly( I'm basically a treditional artist so i started digital for few months.) But i also just keep wondering how can someone say lots of lots word with this simplicity. I mean how. Having you quite a blessing sir. Thanks for your helps.
I think an important thing to take from Guweiz's work isn't necessarily exactly how he uses specific values, but how he uses contrast - you could invert his value set up and get the same impact but a completely different mood. Something he also likes to do is add high contrast elements to his characters, he definitely doesn't do it all the time, but he has more than one painting where a mostly dark character is wearing a brightly glowing earring.
Guweiz has a boldness that borders insolence, and I love him for that. For a start, he had built his entire style on something that an artist should never ever do, which is to mix ancestral Japanese/Chinese elements and clothing with modern ones. Now, if someone from the realm of the mortals does that, it's gonna feel jarring, but he somehow, he manages to make it work and make it work beautifully at that. Then, his compositions are incredibly risky, at times. I mean, look at the piece at 4:31. That pink color he chose for the characters on the entrance door of that building is madness. It's so bright and vivid, it's a miracle it doesn't distract the eye from the center piece of the canvas. And yet, it doesn't. It's perfectly fluid and readable...In fact, it helps to make it more visually pleasing (look how it frames the lady's cigarette). I don't even know how he managed that, it's basically magic to me, that man might as well call himself Houdiwei.
Digital are is nice but I'm more impressed with traditional artist but a breakdown in any artist work is a valuable learning moment so I appreciate this.
Sam I'm 27 I have no instinct when it comes to art at all. I like to write, but I now would like to dabble even if it is just background art. You inspired me. I would like to make backdrops at minimum for my stories.
Hey, I think it's really awesome that you tried this. I wouldn't be comfortable illustrating in all darks, myself. I should give this a try sometime. Great work!
