I've done Motorsports up to Formula 4 for, in a whole 11 years. I've bedded in numerous brake pads and was always interested the technical sides of the car. But somehow I never asked why brake pads get "glassy" from too much heat and what the process actually does. Thank you for clearing that up 😂 Very nice video

Thanks for posting this. Question: can I still bed in the brakes on my new Tallboy if it’s been used a few times on the trail? I had no idea about bedding them, had them bled which helped but they’re still way too spongy! -thanks

Yes, as long as the rotor and pads are 100% clean

@@hardtailparty thanks I’ll give it a shot. They should be clean. If not, do you know if I can I spray auto brake cleaner on them?
@JamieR
@JamieR 2 месяца назад
@@davids6652 Worst case if it doesn't work; You can clean the pads / rotor with isopropanol or brake cleaner. Sand the pads and rotors (fine paper, very lightly just to clean off that thin layer). Re-clean it and make sure it's all evaporated. Then assemble and re-bed. Apparently if you take some water on the pads, then rub them together before drying off and assembling. Then adding some water on the pads while bedding, it supposedly goes way quicker. GMBN Tech and some other bigger channels said this. Can't confirm that last one with water as I've not tried it myself.

I'm thinking of upgrading from my kona mahuna to a norco fluid fs 3, but I tested it out at the bike shop, and the brakes are terrible. When I say that, I mean if I only had one finger on the brake levers I can't stop. How much of a difference does bedding them in do? I don't think that its just bedding them in, because most people say that the brakes on it aren't that great. Any thoughts? Thanks
@hardtailparty

Bedding brakes is super important. Brand new bikes need to be bedded in.
@clmfilms8103
@clmfilms8103 3 года назад
@@hardtailparty ya, but when I got my kona mahuna it wasn't nearly this bad. The brakes on the norco fluid fs 3 are made by some company called tektro. What do you think?

Thank you! I just order new front brake for my hardtail :) (I'm wondering, if I need to change the disc or maybe just clean it with alcohol...)
@hardtailparty
@hardtailparty 4 года назад
No need to change it. Provided it is straight and doesn't have any dents/dings in it. I would definitely recommend scrubbing it with steel wool and rubbing alcohol to remove the old pad material (especially if it has glazed onto it). I do this every time I get new pads.
@hardtailparty
@hardtailparty 4 года назад
Are your pads rubbing when the brakes are off? You may need to re-center your caliper. Also, did you switch to metallic pads, or are they both organic pads?
@hardtailparty
@hardtailparty 4 года назад
@Skots Trails I'd try rinsing your brake pads (while still on the bike), and cleaning the rotor. Some pads make more noise than others. Metallic pads can sound a little more "gritty" than organic pads.

Any time you get new rotors you should do it. Also, if you change brake pads from one type or brand to another, I recommend doing it again. It takes 5 minutes and makes a big difference.
