While I was a monk, I noticed that 95% of western tourist didn't know how to behave in a monastery. Due to the fact they didn't have the chance to spend enough time to get to know the Thai culture but because also most of Thai people don't speak English.
I want to give opportunity to anybody to realize that when they come in Thailand, there are so many precious gifts that have no price but must be seen by an heart which is ready and willing to see.
Those are guidelines and advice to how to behave in a temple but also how to behave with monks.
If you want to know more or if you have any questions please be free to leave a comment. Thank you

I've been teaching meditation for the last 12 years, I used to work in fashion as a model for 8 years until I decided to switch and change...
I open a meditation and massage center in Copenhagen for 6 years until i finally decided to realize my dream.... Being a monk.
So I went to Thailand for 6 years where i stayed in the forest, jungle and caves to deepen my practice.
Today, you can follow my daily quotes, posts, movies .

1. Take off shoes before entering 2. Wear nothing on head (hat and glasses) 3. Do not wear a shirt with no sleeves (cover shoulders) 4. Dress modestly (no cleavage, shorts) 5. Phone must be on mute 6. Bow to the Buddha statue before you do anything else (take your time, don't do it too fast) 7. When bowing- get on knees, palms together at chest, hold for a couple seconds, lower head and body while still on knees for a couple seconds. Repeat about 3 times. 8. When speaking to a monk, get one knees and bow 3 times as well (some monks ask you to stand) always have palms together at chest 9. When giving something to a monk, hand it with both hands (on knees as well) and get up once monk instructs you or leaves 10. When praying or receiving a blessing, keep palms together at chest 11. Do not run 12. No shouting 13. No cursing or speak I'll of someone

I am new to the practice of Thai Buddhism and I found you video very informative! I especially enjoyed your humble style of delivery. It is said you never get a second chance to make a good first impression and you did a lot to make a pleasing intro to the Thai culture. Thank you and Namaste!

I would like to add a slight correction that was taught to me by an Ajarn that is of great importance! When you bow to a monk or Ajarn, bring your hands up to your chest, pause bow your head slightly as you bring your thumbs to your eyebrows in a wai then bring your hands down placing the right hand first on the floor then your left. The right hand shows high respect to the monk. Place your head on the ground then raise up with your hand to your chest, back up with thumbs to eyebrows and repeat 3 times. One for Buddha, one for Buddhism, one for monk. A wai with your thumbs to the eyebrows is the highest respect to a monk and is the only appropriate way. The same wai is for police and royalty. Doing so may get you out of a ticket or fine. Bringing them up as he shows is appropriate for an elder or showing happiness when you meet someone, but not appropriate to a monk or symbol statute. When approaching monk inside a temple, lower yourself below them if they are sitting as soon as possible.....it's OK to crawl to them on your knees with hands in prayer position before beginning the 3 steps of bowing.

This was very helpful, Gilles! Thank you! After driving past for a decade, wondering what happens at the local monastery in rural USA, I found their website, and learned that they invite lay persons to join them in chanting and meditation each evening. It gave me the courage to visit last evening. I found three monks and three nuns, and I was the only lay person there, as well as the only non-Thai. The whole group was welcoming, despite my bumbling. Even those who speak no English made me feel welcome. I could tell that there is much I need to learn to behave properly, and the desire to do so helped me to find your video. I will behave very differently when I return! You explained how to greet and bow to monks. Is the same practice correct when greeting and speaking to nuns?

Speaking to nuns, you may need to respect their distance and use anjali when you start speaking to them. You remind me how I started going to Buddhist temple... Eventually monks and nuns will show you to adress them but to start i suggest that you show them that you know a bit their customs and traditions.

Well, living in Thailand, you will see and observe many religious practices sometimes influenced by Chinese or Indian believes.... Even within temples... There, it is part of the culture...

Same question here, but is this thing only about sunglasses or are glasses forbidden at all, which would be very sad as I prefer watching temples in clear view.

In the Name of Allaah the Most Gracious the Most Merciful. The True Originator of the Seven Heaven's and Earth and all in between sent Prophets and Messengers starting from the first man Adam to the seal and final Prophet Muhammad with one main message to the nations and people and that is there is No True God worthy of being worshipped except Allaah Exalted and Most High. Jesus son of Mary was a Messenger of Allaah and his real name was Eesa ibn Mariam the Messenger of Allaah and his real name was Eesa ibn Mariam the Messenger of Allaah. The Qur'an is a confirmation of what came before it and is the real speech uncreated by man from the Lord of the Universe. Indeed Glorified is he above associated partners in worship to whom we will return on the Day of Resurrection when the Judgement shall take place for mankind. Kindest regards from heart.

Caller to *Allaah* Exalted & Most High. My brother, the Buddha is our one and only creator. Allah is a moon god the Arabs worshipped in prehistoric times and today. The god of the Jews and Christians is a corrupted form of the one and only creator, the Buddha. Peace be upon you, I will pray for you and all the unfortunate unbelievers. 🙏
