This is how to bend U-bolts. Use a VicRoc U-bolt bender. They are not a sponsor, but you can buy them here: www.vicroc.com/en/sous-categor...
Even tho they are not a sponsor, I really enjoy using my VicRoc UB-302 U-bolt bender. We use ours every day and bend over 3000 U-bolts a year with it. This is how we use it to bend our custom made Ubolts from threaded rods.

I would never have imagined that you could get a job shop type u-bolt machine! I'm pretty impressed with. I always imagined it was done in a far larger facility. This was pretty cool.

Your dad spent money wisely. I always used a di-acro bender and it took muscle and time to get every one right. The tool was low cost but labor was high. Wish I had a machine like yours. Thanks for sharing.

The flattened center area mentioned in the comments is a good feature, this prevents crimping the axle housing and, with the waffle gripper pattern feature, reduces slippage and weld breaking and/or housing "tears".

There is a shop 20 mins from me that made U-bolts from start to finish. I get my custom made pieces from them. They cut to length, put through a threading machine. If it’s a large enough diameter, it goes into a heater that heats them to red colour. Then it goes into a 1,000 ton press that squishes the center flat which allows easier bending in the same machine Scott is using. I’ve seen them bend rods without squishing flat also. It was pretty neat to watch. Especially when the press goes through it’s stroke. The floor shakes. 🤣

My local shop would always bend them a little tight, then rap the anvil to loosen it up. He said he did it that way to relieve the stress in the bolt. Don't know if it really makes a difference but it sounds good.
@simcoespring
@simcoespring 2 года назад
I almost always bend them too tight as well then just give them a tap to get it the right size. I don't know if it makes a difference it is just what works.
@gullreefclub
@gullreefclub 2 года назад
The old man who owned the shop I started working in when I was teenager taught me the same thing about bending them a little tight but instead of smacking them against the anvil he had a jigs (different ones for different sizes/styles) made up to slide the u-bolt that you bent a wack with a knockhronometer to spread end back out to “spec.” Additionally at that shop the owner would buy lengths of round bar stock and we had to cut them to length, face the ends off in the lathe and thread them before bending them.

@@DieselRamcharger Yes, lots of room for improvement. But remember, this isn't a machine that's designed for production use. It's a job machine, most of the users are going to be making at most four of the same size in a row, and very often only two. Setting up an end stop for every four bolts doesn't save much time.

@lukeporter8614
@lukeporter8614 2 года назад
@@DieselRamcharger that's not a fair assumption. I use this exact machine daily and sometimes to get the desired width on the first bend you need the outer rollers to be tight which causes flat spots on the sides of the bolts and makes them thinner. He also explained why he does it in the video if you watch it through.
@DieselRamcharger
@DieselRamcharger 2 года назад
@@lukeporter8614 he DID explain it. and i dont accept his explanation. i get it. trying to show the quality he puts into the product. i am however not convinced there is an functionable difference. just as setting the stop vs measuring to center on each bolt. time wasted. unless his supplier has irregular cut length. but i would handle that with my supplier not handicap my production to suite. i mean to each their own. Canada has the economy it does. For a reason.
@lukeporter8614
@lukeporter8614 2 года назад
Your machine looks almost new for its age. aours has many modifications and looks quite different to yours and is much, much slower.. not sure why. Perhaps management though it was dangerous for it to be moving so quick. Do your bolts come out with a twist in them that needs to be straightened? Depending on the bolt sometimes ours end up with about ¼ to ½ inch twist in them 🤷🏻‍♂️ Great vid nice to see how other people do them.

I had to argue with my boss about buying new U bolts. He wanted to cut and weld the old ones to fit and I said "you're fucked" It only costs $250 for new ones and they come with new nuts and washers. We spent a day trying to remove the old ones before he gave up and let me order new ones from napa. I can use a measuring tape and read so it was no problem and could have saved us a day of work if he had of listened to me!

the dealerships can charge and arm and a leg. We recently got a quote from the dealership for a set of 4 ubolts and they wanted $250. which we think is very expensive. same set of 4 here was only $55 plus tax. Maybe I should start selling them on my website.
