This video describes how to bikepack Korea, how to bicycle tour South Korea, the simple way, using the Four Rivers Bike Trail. The Four Rivers Trail stretches across Korea from Seoul to Busan, making Korea incredibly bike friendly. This is one of the best things to do in Korea, if you like biking, of course.

Good to know information about the paths from Pyeongtaek not linking to the Four Rivers. I completed the XC route from Incheon to Busan in 2015 and will be back for more Korea touring later this year. That brown section you pointed to on your bike passport has the most climbing on the entire cross country route. Your FS MTB looks sweet, but you might want a lighter bike if you're going to do the entire trip. Also, some portions of the XC path, including the brown section, are on shared two-lane roads where the blue line might have worn off. Another sleeping option for folks are Jimjilbang (which might be closed/reduced capacity due to COVID) and Yo-gwan (mom and pop overnight sleeping). Both are very affordable and will reduce the weight you have to carry throughout the duration of the trip.

Weather in Korea needs to be considered. It is recommended to ride a bicycle from March 15 to June and September to November. There are typhoons and heavy rains from July to August. It is very cold from December to early March. Most of them are convenience stores, but there are no convenience stores in the countryside. Whenever you see a convenience store, pack your food. Sometimes there are no convenience stores. But... there will be a number of convenience stores within 10km. Of course, there are thousands in the city. If you can speak Korean, you can have chicken delivered on the street. Any food can be delivered wherever you are. You can also call a call taxi if you have a hard time going. The call taxi number has a contrast in the authentication booth. Also, if you need help, Koreans will understand because they can read even though it is difficult to hear and speak English. Of course... most Koreans understand if you speak slowly in English. It is better for you to learn simple Korean. Even if the Korean pronunciation is weird, everyone understands... so you don't have to worry about pronunciation.

THANK YOU! you're so helpful! I'm planning to do Seoul to Busan solo. It'll be more fun to join a cycling group though.

That's right. On the Ocheon River path that this gal was trying to reach, there is virtually no convenience stores. Which is nice, because it means it is really quiet and empty. So pack water and food for the day. In addition to climate, one also needs to consider prevailing winds on the East Coast path. When I did it from north to south in May, I was battered rather constantly by cold head winds from the ocean. There are also more climbs than in the Four Rivers path so there's that too.

I so badly wanted a bike in Korea. Enlisted life near Wonju was a little less privileged. I'll go back for sure. Best year of my life spent in the ROK.

Very cool! I shipped my bicycle. Not sure I'm quite up for the 40-95 km a day though. I'm more of a "let's bike to brunch" type. 🤣

Haha. That sounds like a good way to live life. When you get here, the bike trail runs outside the gate of post. Cross the river, turn left onto the bike trail on the opposite side and it takes you to great coffee shops and a bike cafe. Perhaps that will be right up your alley :)

Thanks for this vid, Erin. My wife, 2 adult children, and I *were* planning on visiting So. Korea this summer to celebrate my son's university and my daughter's graduate school graduations, but COVID-19 will likely force us to table this trip this summer. But, my son and I want to do the complete Incheon/Seoul to Busan ride 1 week ahead of my wife's and daughter's arrival (they're not at all into the ride. :-), so vids like yours will help us plan out our adventure. Thanks! Liked and subscribed!

1:50 Pick up a disease from what? 3:26 Ok, one doesn't need front or rear suspension anywhere for the official bike paths in Korea. In fact, I did the Four Rivers on a non-suspended 20" folding bike. The terrain and surface is, overall, smooth and paved.

1:50 From rodents. 3:26 You right. I used the bike I had, not one curated for the ride. Your bike sounds far more efficient for the flat riding.

Erin McShane what’s makes your video stand out was you mentioning the blue lines on the bike trail, once you find it your on the right path. Every other RU-vid video just say “you can’t get lost” I look forward for your next video, to be honest, I can’t find one RU-vid video where they actually mention the spot where they start and spot where you finish, all say they say is Incheon and Busan 😅

I too was looking forward to part 2. I had to read the comments to this video to find out about no part 2 video. I'm not much of a cyclist, I'm more of a runner. Nonetheless, it is something I would like to pick up as a hobby. Any suggestions on bikes and where to get them here in Korea? I just got to Korea and I am currently in quarantine. I've been watching your videos to gather some info on the area and things to do. I appreciate all the videos you have posted. I needed on info on the Senior barracks and gyms around it. I will be working in Suwon so I have a decision to make as into whether I want to live in Camp Humphreys or off post Suwon. So thank you very much ma'am.

Welcome to Korea! I look forward to your Suwon/Humphreys decision. I don’t have info for you there. Facebook marketplace is one spot for bikes. Honestly, people abandon their bikes on post all the time. I wonder if you politely asked the person at the desk of the MP station whether they would give you one from their impound warehouse. If you want to buy new, platoon cycles is right off post, great bike store. Very fair prices for bike repairs.

Thanks for the message, it made me realize I needed to link the PDF map in the video description. Here it is: m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1164095307073648&id=138112479671941. I rode the teal blue trail West to East to link up with the brown trail on that map. I recommend starting at Hapgang Park, 40km from Camp Humphreys. With a friend dropping you off. Your other options are to bike there on lesser traveled roads (5hr according to KakaoMap) or use highways/higher trafficked roads, inherently way more dangerous and less fun.

Hey, Thanks for your comment! I’m glad you like the videos. Thanks to your comment, I adjusted my publishing schedule and finished a video with the top 5 things you must know before you PCS here. It will be published at 8:15pm EST today. One thing I did not put in there is to be careful in your first two weeks and be careful who you make friends with. Statistically, people are most likely to get in trouble in Korea within the first two weeks of arriving. Remember, there are cameras everywhere across Korea: on streets, in buildings and transit, everywhere. If you are with some folks who are likely to get you in trouble, it’s easy to get caught. At the same time, though it’s easy to get in trouble, it’s also easy to set the example and get promoted quickly when you work hard here. Best of luck to you at Humphreys and in your career! Welcome to the Army family.

Erin McShane thank you so much. i appreciate it a lot and look forward to going to korea. just watched your video on the 5 things to do and i definitely plan on traveling a lot. i’m mainly looking for more outside things to do and what kind of “freedoms” i’ll have when i get there like places to go on hikes and best places to go see while i’m there and stuff along that nature. i tend to like to dive into a new culture and not see all the touristy stuff but what the locals really enjoy doing you know? but thank you again for the great videos!

Thank you! As for your starting point question: Check the link in the video description for the map of the trail. Find whatever stop along the trail where you would like to begin your journey, find the Korean translation for that stop and use KakaoMap or another App for step by step directions to that location. For the passport: go to any bike store in the country to pick one up.
