Big booklights make for big results. We had multiple interviews that needed different looks. The 8x8 booklight was perfect for this shoot. Paired with the Aputure 1200D, we had the output needed to overpower the windows and also allow for soft lighting.

Looks nice. I've shot in that space many times over the years. Whenever I shoot into the large sliding door, I like to put a furniture blanket behind it to cut the light from coming under the opening on the bottom. It's definitely a good space to film in and you can get a good variety of shots with it.

Suggestion. A bottomer piece of duvatyne skirted and grip clipped to the rolling book light that can help take some light off subject legs and spill onto floor and therefore concentrate focus of light to subject. Also, my favorite light in these setups was the use of the accent light! A very overlooked light in quick interview set ups.

I was waiting for somebody to say this exact thing! I feel the reflections from the windows matched the booklight. So we rolled with it. But great point and idea. Adding a skirt of duve or flagging the bottom would help reduce the spread over the lower part of the frame. Yes my legs are white, but everybody else had dark pants! lol

I really appreciate that some find the Booklight an attractive method of lighting but I find them an unnecessary amount of effort for a result that can be easily achieved with a 7foot Westcott umbrella and diffuser. I’ve worked in the industry for 30 years and seen it all, but given the amount of gear required and excessive set up time I really don’t see much advantage of using a book light on most interview scenarios, especially if one alone. Fair enough, bigger productions, with big crews may justify the time and effort involved but in most smaller projects a big umbrella, coupled with a diffuser, are more than adequate. The only real advantage of a booklight is if you are using hot lights, as more heat can be expelled with a book light but with modern cob lights the limited heat generated is much less of a factor.

I can see the many scenarios where the 7' umbrella would play well. I even use the Aputure 150 dome if I can get away with it. The times where the big booklight setups play well is when you want more control. If you see the image at 4:08 , the light is favoring one side and then has a gradient as it goes outward from the hot spot. If the umbrella is fixed to the light, the hot spot would be in the center and the output would be reduced on the edges. So it could reduce wrap if you can'r get it close enough to camera. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and leave feedback. I helps me and others get new ideas and better each other. It was as far as we could go to wrap and stay out of frame. The head to toe wide makes it tough to light soft.

Love your videoa man! Super helpful! Question. How would you light a two person interview sitting next to each other? Ill be facing realtively tight place and I dont think I can pull of something like a book light. Would a lantern work? Flag the unnecessary spill? Curious about your thoughts? Chris

Please explain why you use a booklight in this scenario? The bigger the light source in relativ to the subject is what makes it soft. If you move your 1200 further back and fill out your 8x8, you get the same soft result.

The amount and type of diffusion also plays a factor. The ultra bounce helps to scatter the light which then hits the front diffusion.

I agree with the type of diffusion, and that the ultra bounce scatters the light to fill out your 8x8. Which again makes the source bigger, and thereby softer. But i disagree on the amount of diff. The amount can remove light intensity, but it does not soften it. Filling up youre 8x8 to the edges with light does soften it. But in this scenario, it looks like you could move youre 1200 back and get the same result. Dont get me wrong. i use a book light often myself, especially in a small space where it makes sense. You should make a comparison :-) @@PDMokry

Great stuff. I appreciate you showing how you work. Also, did you drive up to Nashville for the shoot or did they come to you? I made the drive the other way for a job in Dallas a few weeks ago when it had snowed in Nashville and it was a long day of driving to make it down on time!

I'm surprised 1200d is necessary for such setup, but I guess because this is really big space. I'm usually having my 300C at 2-8% :D.

So the big factor is the windows. If we did not have to fight the windows, it would not require such output. Also the booklight was setup in a way that allowed a lot of spill. So we lost output there. Then bouncing and diffusing all cut output. If it was just a light dome 150, we could get away with a 600D at times.

I'd love to see how you custom white balance with the FX6. Still my #1 issue with it. Are you using a light meter, or doing the obnoxious "in camera" white balance?

So if you manually change the Kelvin, there is no green or magenta adjustment. You want to fill the frame and do a custom white balance before you start the interview. You can see me bring in the floppy just to use it as a white card.

@@rossthomas4738 So make the frame smaller. Get some black foam core. Cut a square in the middle, smaller thank your lens. The camera will only read the white part.

Thanks for the video, Piotr. Which picture profile were they using on the FX6 bodies? I noticed that the levels would be low if shooting in S-LOG, so I am guessing they weren't shooting in LOG. (Normally, for S-LOG, it seems that exposing around 65IRE on the bright side of the face helps to reduce noise in shadows.) Second Question: How important is it to own Sony bodies (specifically the FX6) to get work? It seems that lower-budget and middle-budget projects want Sony, and specificially the FX6. Am I right that there is a big demand for the FX6 in particular and Sony in General?

So there is a lot of back and forth when it comes to exposing SLog3 on the new Sony cameras. I follow Allister Chapmans recommendations, which is zebras at 52 +/-1 on the bright side of the face. This seems to give me the best results. The LUTs I use have two versions and one has a higher exposure than the other. I am not a colorist or expert at editing. The FX6 has helped me land many gigs over the last year. Everybody is team Sony these days. Thanks for the comment!

65IRE is way too hot for skin in Slog. And you can see from the camera monitors in the shots that they were shooting log. Log isn't difficult to expose, and the FX series are low-light beasts. The native ISO is 650, so you don't need a ton of light to get good exposure.

At night, yes. But otherwise, it is not enough power. Even more so when double diffusing the light.

Do you ever bring fake plants, generic artwork, floor lamps or other such props to these shoots? I'm also a one-man-band trying to do the best under tight budgets and deadlines, but I feel like some of the rooms we get are lackluster and even a single well-placed prop would make a big difference.

Most of my shoot are smaller scale, so adding another task would slow me down or throw off my flow. A lot of the times, clients will help dress things up. But art dept does take things to the next level!
