This video demonstrates the process of perfect binding, also known as Lumbeck binding or double-fan binding. The video is intended for complete beginners and will enable you to bind a collection of single sheets using PVA glue, thus enabling you to bind your own thesis or other documents.
NOTE: It has been pointed out to me that, while I am using the term perfect binding as synonymous with Lumbeck or double-fan binding, in the strict sense it refers to hot-glued binding that is used for commercially bound books. In this strict sense, what I am demonstrating here can be more properly called Lumbeck or double-fan binding.
For more on a basic introduction to case binding, see my series below:
• Case Binding
For more on the Wibalin paper that I used for the other cover:

@@AnnesiBindings I do laugh at the term "PerfectBound", because looking at my disintegrating paperback with cheap acid-paper, it seems far less than perfect. 😊 I'm pondering over what to do... if I were to put a strip of cloth or paper down the spine and glue it in place, it will then make the text-block too wide for the existing paperback cover. Hence, the pages will be protruding beyond it. What can I do about that? Thanks.

I bound my first book using this technique, it works very well. I used a bit too much glue sticking the front and back end sheets to the cover, this caused some rippling, but generally was really pleased with the result. Thanks again

This is gonna make them look so much nicer at a relative low cost. I’ll make sure to watch your other videos on the subject to get all the other details left out! Thanks again!

Tip, place yor clamps one third of the distance from each end and tighten. Doing this means that the pressure exerted by the clamps is equal across the entire length of the pages to be glued. Tip never whip glued items end to end. Always wipe from the middle to the end using a diagonal movement. This method ensures that all air is removed from under the material being glued.

Howzit, thank you for sharing! I wonder if you have advice regarding paperback reading books? I have several books +- 50 years old. ( paperback story books) The front/back pages are coming loose..not the cover although some are quite flimsy! Is There someway to repair these pages? I don't want to use tape. Cheers🌻

@JackieLinh
@JackieLinh 3 года назад
Would you recommend this method for books that are thicker, as in 300-500 pages?
@AnnesiBindings
@AnnesiBindings 3 года назад
You can use it for thicker books (although if you have the option to stitch them that is always better, especially if they'll be used a lot). However, for a thicker book it might be a good idea to add an Oxford hollow to give extra strength. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YFn881MYiEo.html

I'm curious why you made the spine board width of the spine +4mm? I've always been told width of the spine + 1/2 the thickness of the boards (or 1 board thickness). Also I love your paste paper! It is very lovely.
@AnnesiBindings
@AnnesiBindings 3 года назад
Thank you! The measurements were ones I had worked out for this specific project, and I confess that I usually just go by my instinctive feel. But giving a formula like yours would probably have been better as people may have different board thicknesses.

Hello ! In this case is it good idea to make signatures from separate pages with connection strip tissue paper and paste two separate pages in one folio ?
@AnnesiBindings
@AnnesiBindings 3 года назад
Apologies for not replying sooner! You certainly do that, but then it would be a different kind of binding. Also, something like that would be more suited to a book with not too many pages and thicker paper. If you did it with many thinnish pages, it would lead to thickening at the spine (and be a lot of work!).
