How to bind SPI receiver with an ACCESS radio in D16. 📻✈

****Note, There have been some changed since this video. This will not work if you update your internal RF (isrm) or (XJT) module to any FW version 2.x or higher!****
This is not a new feature but the most frequent questions that i get is how to bind a new ACCESS enabled radio to a micro drone / whoop. This can be done with the newer breed of radios using ACCST D16 mode. Here I cover how to make that happen.
I still recommend going with an external XJT or multi protocol module to enable D8 mode. I have experienced a LOT of range and reliability issues with SPI receivers in D16 mode.
CLI SPI Bind commands based on different Betaflight versions:
For Betaflight 4.1.x type bind_rx
For Betaflight 4.0.x type bind_rx_spi
For Betaflight 3.x type frsky_bind

@@gabkimus7721 You will need to downgrade your ISRM (Internal RF) FW to 1.1.3 to use D16 with a SPI based receiver. You can find the FW at frsky's download page for your radio click the "history" link and you'll get the FW you need.

OMG!!! You don't know how many videos I went through to get my Taranis x9d+ SE 2019 to work with the TinyHawk2 and yours was it. Even bought an external XJT module for it. After upgrading the receiver firmware and following your procedure, I finally got it to work. Can't speak to the range question yet but Thank you!

Thank you again for your help! I was going back and forth with HappyModel and together we got the Mobula7 to bind with the Taranis QX7 ACCESS radio. Here are the steps I did: FrSky QX7 Radio: ISRM 2.1.6, BetaFlight: version 4.3.0, BetaFlight: Receiver Mode: SPI Rx, BetaFlight: SPI Bus Receiver Provider: FRSKY_X_V2, BetaFlight: CLI Line: Bind_RX (Lights next to USB indicated binding mode), FrSky QX7 Radio: bind in ACCST D16 for 6-8 seconds (Lights nest ro USB indicated a bind!), BetaFlight: CLI Line: Save, Disconnect USB Power to Mobula7 (FrSky QX7 Radio reported "Lost signal"), FrSky QX7 Radio: Bind off, Reconnected USB, BetaFlight shows bound via Receiver tab corresponds with stick movement on FrSky QX7 Radio!

As usual great video and thank you! Unfortunately, the XJT Lite modules on the shelf's now will not work for D8 mode. I asked Wayne at Aloft Hobbies in Novato, CA what was up as I could not bind any of my D8 receivers. He has a direct pipeline to FrSky and told me while D8 shows as an option in the XJT lite bind choices, it is not active due to D8 being illegal in Europe. One of our Multi GP club members has the iRange lite multi-module and that does work for D8 but costs over 1.5 times more than the XJT Lite and as far a I can tell only Bangood carries it so good luck getting one of those out of China right now! Sigh, I agree with you I love-love-love my X9 Lite and hate I have to take my big clunky Q7S to whoop races!

If you have a lbt radio then you need to use frsky_x_lbt but you can not be on isrm v2.x you need to be on v1.1.3

After watching 1st minute I thought You will going to tell us a way to use D8 natively on X9 lite. I was about to lose my hair since I have ordered XJT Lite for myself 2 days ago. Anyway, good video just 1 tip for others - if You are flying in EU on LBT stuff make sure you choose FRSKY_X_LBT as SPI Bus Receiver provider in Betaflight.

@@zuqafpv Yeah. I have the same. For me helps to change "PID loop frecuency" (In System configuration) to 2 kHz or below. Looks like the CPU on whoop overloaded at 8 kHz. But Gyro update freq still 8 kHz. And it's just fine for me.

@@timothysearcy697 I didn't upgrade my QX7 to ACCST 2.0, because if I'm right it will no longer work with receivers with original ACCST protocol, so the firmware version is: 2.3.9 , internal RF XJT D8 .Hope it helps.

Have you had any problems with arming if you use trim? On my x-lite-pro, if i trim it, then dis-arm, it wont arm again until I center the trims out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can certainly help you out. If your radio currently works with your th2 then your radio has access v1 fw on it. You will need to flash accst 1.x fw to your xm+ or upgrade the fw on your radio.. The down side to upgrading your radio is it will then be incompatible with your th2.

@@TweetFPV so I'm new to the hobby and that's the receiver I was told I had and I couldn't find a matching picture on the internet and come to find out it's not a XM plus even though I had bought a new one to install and replace in case it was broken. It's actually an rsxr .. one of the wires was broken on it and I tried to resecure it to the plastic clip or whatever that plugs onto the receiver but even though it's getting powered I don't think that s bus wire is connected well because I can't get it into s bus mode in the blue light will not flash it all no matter what I try so that's my theory on it and now I have the choice between messing with the rxsr or just replacing it with the new XM Plus. Sorry for the novel however just trying to explain in detail to avoid any confusion and asking what would you do if you were me. Thank you so much

Most likely you will experience poor range on d16 mode when bound to a spi reciever. A external mpm is a good idea for d8 mode.

Do you have any idea what would cause the Taranis to freak out? I got mine binded but after setting up the switches, it won't arm. The taranis is also constantly saying "Telemetry Lost" or "Telemetry Recovered" or "RF Signal Critical" and nothing I'm doing is getting the drone moving. Tried binding with both Telemetry on and off in the model settings, tried switching the Rx back to FRSKY_D (which led to it not binding at all) and I'm at a loss. Any clue what could be happening here man?

I just bought a new Taranis X Lite Pro and a TinyHawk S. I also have a new R_SRX receiver and a XSR_Sim modular , none will bind! I have Open TX 2.3.9 in TX and use Beta flight 10.7.0. Been working for hours with no luck, Got any ideas.

You need to make sure your bootloader is on the same version so 2. 3.9. Did you flash new fw to your internal module (isrm)?

Hey man great video! I decided to get an XJT module for my QX7 Access to avoid the D16 hussle, but it turns out that my QX7 module bay is way bigger than the x9d and I cannot plug in the XJT. Do you know of any other modules that I cant attach to the QX7? Thanks!!

The module bay for the qx7 and the x9d are the same. The x9 lite and xlite use the mini Jr bay. If you have the qx7 you need to look for a xjt module like this one www.amainhobbies.com/frsky-xjt-transmitter-module-frk-3030401/p1167046

No, its not a problem with openTX V 2.3 12. The issue you most likely have is that your internal rf module fw is incorrect. The highest isrm version fw that will work with these spi based receivers is v1. 1.3 it is also region specific. If your radio says isrm version x.x.x EU then you need to change your rx protocol in bf to frsky_x_lbt. If says x.x.x fcc then you need to change it to frsky_x

Hi there, Great video and explanation. I have tried everything and I can't get my Tinyhawk S to bind with my Taranis X9 lite. I followed all the steps (also in your other video on how to update firmware). I did it all except one thing. I updated to the 2.3.7 opentx firmware instead of 2.3.5 and I updated the bootloader to 2.3.7. Can that be what courses me the troubles? Or should it work with that firmware and bootloader as well? the boot loader not being updated can cause issues with binding. also the ISRM FW needs to be on v1.1.3 the V2.x WILL NOT work with the spi boards on D16

I'm spending second day to try get the TaranisQ X7 ACCESS working with my tihyhawk2. I use the ACCST D16 mode, the TH and radio are bind together, but in betaFlight and also during flight the RSSI often drops to zero (like every 10s). Any advice here?

The only recommendation I have for you is to get an external multiprotocol module. These radios and fc do work in d16 mode but they do suffer from terrible range and poor connection quality. Some work well others do not. Sounds like yours is one of the do nots.

I've been able to bind SPI receivers to the X-Lite pro and X9 Lite for a while now using the frsky_spi_autobind CLI method. We recently got our shipment of Archer RS receivers in from the factory. I was not able to register/bind them at all until I updated to ISRM 2.x, which killed my ability to bind to SPI receivers. Their "technical rep" sent me the link to this video, but it doesn't seem to address that. Is there a workaround for that yet, or will I have to flash the ISRM back and forth?

Typically you can. Most spi boards do have at least 1 uart broken out on the board but the soldering is very difficult as the pads are very small.

I'm using opentx 2.3.9 ISRM FW v 1.1.3 and this will not work with V 2.x FW. Your R9 fw is independent of your internal (ISRM) FW. so you can run older ISRM FW and current R9 FW at the same time.

You can try disabling telemetry, or re-binding but this is a side effect of using d16 with these spi boards. Some are great and some are terrible. It's a complete roll of the dice. You unfortunately might just have one of the bad ones. I highly recommend getting an external module for these spi d8 quads or you can add an external rx

So I got my 1s Mobula 7 bound now it was the new firmware not playing nice. But now the damn thing has no throttle response on the throttle stick everything including thr responds in bf correctly but when armed there is zero motor spin up except for pitch and roll if i give it right stick input i get the correct yaw/roll motor spin but no main power on thr wtf is wrong ?

I had the opposite experience with my x lite pro. When I bound my tiny hawks using D16 they had decent range but once I got the xjt external module and bound in d8 they have poor signal even when only a few feet away. Any ideas what might cause that?

This is odd. I would say you possibly have a faulty module. D8 in my experience is always better than d8 with the spi boards.

New to all of this and the Taranis Q X7 Access with a tinyhawk 2 has given me a bad introduction. Is there a receiver that works with the tinyhawk 2 without having to do all the mumbo jumbo?

There is but your best option is to purchase a external multiprotocol module for your radio.

Is access d16 the same as d16? I have the XSR Sim dongle and it's refusing to bind with my x9 lite. I assume that means they're different?

There is no access d16. Its either access or accst d16. It is possible to bind to your Sim dongle in accst d16 mode but you will need to make sure your internal rf fw is compatible. V1.1.3 on your isrm should be what works.

@@TweetFPV That's it. Accst d16. I was going off memory on what it was called. I'll have to check the firmware versions. That's probably what the problem is. I seen one guy say "I dint know why you would ever want to flash new firmware to your gongle" then I seen another guy flash new firmware to it and his radio and that made it work. I don't recall if I ever updated the firmware on my x9 lite or not. It's been so long ago now. Thanks for the answer.

I haven't tried it on emu. I don't see why it wouldn't work. You are probably missing a step ot don't have one of the setting correct.

Hi, a non-Frsky module multi-protocol does not work, but a Frsky ACCST module could work on ACCESS radios? I don't understand this strategy...

I have followed the same steps, but unfortunately it didn't go through. the qx7 access Tx operating system is up to date 2.3.9 Betaflight version 4.0.0 is uptodate 10.7.0 Configuration is Frsky_x in the CLI: bind_rx_spi, then put the radio on bind mode D16 then hit Save. nothing worked! :( Can you please tell me if there is anything I need to check

Still no joy. Set the ISRM to 1.1.3 and followed your directions to a T. I have the FrSky QX7 ACCESS and the Mobula7. Been beating my head on this for a week! I have been going back and forth with HappyModel as well, and still no joy.

Heeeey :) Thanks a lot for your video ! However, impossible to bind my bet65s with my taranis qx7 ACCESS... I flashed the 1.1.3 isrm firmware, I'm in eu, and the spi receiver is set to FRSKY_X_LBT. Also, I'm well on the 2.3.5 version of openTX... Don't understand what is going on. Any help would be welcome :) Cheers !

But basically same process but you select frsky_x_lbt in betaflight. If you don't see that then you'll need to update bf. Be sure to back up your betaflight settings.

I have found that other reviewers are taking the easy way out and not talking about how to get these radios to work and are just suggesting buying something else. These are really good radios one you figure out thier quirks.

Hey man I did what you said just getting into this hobby. This video seems a bit dated so maybe the newer firmware doesn't work? Did everything I said and I can't get it to bind :(. I noticed that when I created a new model I didn't get that option to select what kinda model either. Plz help I'll buy u a beer!

I had my tinyhawk 2 bound to my taranis Q X7 accst. After installing a long range module on the taranis and doing a firmware update I can no longer bind to my tinyhawk. Even when I turn external module off. Can someone help here??

You might have accidentally flashed over your internal rf moduel. Go to www.frsky-rc.com/taranis-q-x7-3/ and download the ixjt fw but select the "history" version not v2.1 copy that to you sd card and flash your internal module with that fw.

Have you tried using the frsky_x lbt mode in the bf config tab. I have to admit I have no experience trying to get a EU branded radio to work like this.

I got a betafpv f3 v1.1 board which has frsky rx via sbus protocol how to bind to it using frsky x9 lite. I have both d8 and d16 using xjt lite module.. new to this hobby kindly help me to bind to the brushed fc.

It's the same process but you can't use the cli command for binding you'll need to be in d8 mode on the xjt lite module

@@TweetFPV frsky fcc xm+. I sure there is one because i am pressing the bind button like all the videos am watching haha. the problem is the red and green lights are just solid when i press the binding button and connect the battery while my transmitter is on binding mode

@@jousiff91 Something isn't adding up here. If its XM+ then you aren't using an SPI board. which would make sense why it wont save the changes to the protocol like you mentioned before. Is the "bind" button you are pressing on the flight controller or on a separate board? Pictures would really help. Okay, now I'm having a different problem. After fiddling with a few settings on Beta flight, I decided to reset the settings and just create a new model on my TX. After doing so, Betaflight isn't preloading the range values for the AUX1-3 controls anymore and I'm not fully understanding how it was setting those up to begin with. No matter how I set the ARM and ANGLE, the Mob6 will not arm and I haven't found a way to create a "crash flip" control from scratch. Should I flash the board on the whoop or is there another way? I'm about ready to just throw this damn thing. I'll get more air time out of it that way. LOL j/k

Haha yea that's not how it works unfortunately. Did you back up your settings before you did that? Either way the channels are probably not populating because you need to go to the config tab and enable spi based receiver and frsky_x if you were running d16. Unfortunately this will just be the top of the iceberg of issues you might encounter from clearing the settings.

I have a Taranis Q X7s ACCESS radio and a Tinyhawk Freestyle. After flashing the ISRM module from v2.1.0 to v1.1.3 I managed to the bind the Tinyhawk to the radio in D16 ACCST mode but the signal is so unstable that the quad is impossible to fly. When I power on the radio and the quad the signal remains "stable" for about 5 seconds then it keeps dropping and coming back every 15s or so. The radio keeps saying "Telemetry Lost, Telemetry Recovered, Telemetry Lost, Telemetry Recovered... RF signal critical" etc. I have tried both FCC and EU (LBT) modes but the issue does not disappear. Does anyone know what the reason could be?

The reason seams to be an issue with the amount of data sent in d16 mode. Some boards are better than others. This is why i don't really recommend using d16 mode with SPI based boards. The XJT module is the only real way to get D8 for these models to work well.

That is not true. D8 works just fine with the XJT module just not the ISRM on newer ACCESS radios. There is a LOT of incorrect info out there by people who just don't understand how these radios work.

To help you I need more info. 1. what radio are you using? 2. What version of opentx? 3. What ISRM firmware version? 4. Is your radio FCC or EU? 5. What is your bootloader version?

That's an odd failure. Have you made any changes in betaflight from the stock firmware setup? What is your cpu usage when you are connected to betaflight?

Your doing it wrong then or you don't have your operating system and bootloader updated. There is a small gotya with the rf fw. You need to be on isrm 1.1.3. You can no be on 2.0 or newer.
