ACCST 2.0 is the latest bad decision FrSky has made. It creates a schism where D16 is no longer compatible with itself, depending which firmware version you're running. Which versions of D16 firmware are compatible with which radios? That's what we'll figure out today.

Hi Bruce , I am an original Frsky customer from Australia , I have never had a single issue . After watching Joshua's Video I will never buy another genuine Frsky receiver . As far as im concerned they have lost me as a customer , Jumper and other 3rd party companies who produce excellent quality frsky compatible gear will get my cash .

Live by the sword, die by the sword. Cloning was always Chinese business method. So it’s even funny to see how they deal with a problem that western world has for many years. I think in few years China will introduce kind of IP law. If economy would be a reason one would buy multi-module for 30 bucks and preserves investment. But hobby is always about emotions so now people will switch to another cloned radio with multi-module inside for at least 150 bucks. :)

Josh, thank you so much for this video! I recently bought a few tiny whoops which are frsky D8 and I bought a jumper T8SG just to fly the tiny whoops with but them I bought a 5 inch drone and bought frsky xm plus receiver and after 3 days of trying to bind that receiver your video explains why it would not bind at all. I have over 40 drones but they all are spektrum and that is why I did not have any experience with frsky and I was actually thinking of buying the latest frsky transmitter but now I am convinced that I don't want to buy products from a company that has such a bad behavior. thank you!

Bravo Joshua! It needed saying and you said it for all of us. I chose Frsky when I first got into this hobby because it seemed to be the most widely used environment. I contemplated Spectrum, but didn't want to be locked into their stuff. After all, Frsky worked with my whoops, all of them, and that satisfied me. I've spent a lot of money on Frsky stuff and this really pisses me off. The choice, I guess is to either change to their new universe or get left behind. I don't want to add extra weight to my whoops, so I guess I'll be a dinosaur on the pre V2.0 ACCST. Please keep us posted on new developments. And, as always, thanks for the video and for the way that you advocate for the hobby, not the manufacturers.

They also did this on the R9 system. R9 is no longer just R9. Get an R9M X-lite Pro transmitter and you will learn it only supports R9 ACCESS and not the more widely deployed R9 ACCST protocol. Not very PRO if you ask me. If you don't want a paper weight then you must update your receivers to ACCESS. Problem solved right ? No, if you own other transmitters with JR bay R9M modules they wont work and CAN'T be upgraded to ACCESS. The solution is to buy the R9M 2019 version to replace the R9M you already have to use a protocol you don't really need but are forced to use. The "R9" ecosystem is now an incompatible mess purposely made to push you towards access and buy more stuff. No more FrSky for me.

Owner of two X9d's, a ton of X4R's,XSRs, R-XSRs... I just found some cheap D16 Rx's, the one's branded Jumper on Banggood for $10 on Hobbycool. Only to hold me off until I purchase my TBS full crossfire, and Jumper T16, and start replacing all my Rxs later this year. I loved FrSky, then they started doing things to protect themselves against cloning. The reason why they are in Business in the first place! Let's not forget the X9D (along with all X9D "like" Tx's) is a JR clone (JR 9503)! One of the reasons why the long time company Japan Remote Control closed their doors is because FrSky was able to copy them. WE STILL call it a "JR Bay"!!! Lord, TBS is a company that has its own downsides, but they have always been fair, they have always been pushing for this hobby and without them, we would not be where we are!

Yeah, I found the other flysky dude, high five! This is exactly why I went with fs-i6 (forward and backward compatible with AFHDS 2A and non-2A protocols so I have a big selection of receivers to suit my needs), since my Turnigy 9x was showing it’s age since most micros use the newer one. Not sure I’d really need anything different any time soon, it just works and does it well especially after minor modifications. It used to use anything from an old cell phone battery to a 6s pack for powering the transmitter but now I’m just using old 3s packs since I have a 2w booster on the back (FCC technician license KG5YRN), so I was going to go for crossfire or R9 but really there’s no need now and no firmware or setting changes at all for any of my models like my tiny whoops to my planes, everything just works every time, it’s nice!

@@jakegarrett8109 FlySky did the exact same move as frsky last year. They released the AFHDS3 protocol together with all new radios which are no longer backwards compatible. Just to get control back over the protocol that they put all their work and R&D money in. Which is totally fine and well within their right.. just like most of what frsky tries to do is well within their right and justified. This entire drama around frsky is pretty dumb. Sometimes, the people in this community feel so entitled. Why do they think that frsky should continue to support bootleg unlicensed receivers.. Or that they should be okay with multi-protocol modules being able to run their intellectual property? Imagine the tantrum that TBS would throw if they were in this situation..
@jakegarrett8109
@jakegarrett8109 4 года назад
@@yekt3805 The bad thing is its turning your stuff into bricks. Its like if Windows stopped supporting 32 bit applications**. Also, controllers from FlySky have been that way, I don't know if you knew, but AFHDS2A is not backwards compatible with AFHDS, however some/most controllers could run both protocols: which is why I bought the older Flysky i6 and not the newer i6s, because the i6 out of the box you can switch between the two and it saves that with your model, so no changing my receivers out of my old planes or quads because it can run the new protocol like my Whoop runs 2A (with voltage telemetry) while my old stuff mostly has AFHDS non-2a receivers. So the protocol has never been backwards compatible to my knowledge, but that didn't mean the controller couldn't just natively run it (which I would think is ideal). So that's not really news worthy that 3A wouldn't back support it. **which has been debated in Linux and Mac ecosystems, but of course with Linux you simply install the small package back in and youre fine, not a huge deal, but if Mac does it, then its forced fed down the throats of all Mac users much the same way WIndows force updates and removes useful features or ads stupid ones like Grove music/3D Viewer/Maps/Weather/Candy Crush/Xbox app and how they took away the most useful thing ever "sticky notes", and hey, just checked today and that's back even though they removed that a long time ago maybe in windows 8...
@yekt3805
@yekt3805 4 года назад
@@jakegarrett8109 Sry for the confusion but I said that the new *radios* are not backwards compatible and won't support the 2 older protocols. I never said that any protocol itself is backwards compatible with an older protocol.. And windows might not be the best example since there are so many companies that are (or were) stuck on older OS versions like XP because their in-house programs and workflows would no longer work in Win7/8/10. Ofc it's bad for the customer, but in my eyes it's kinda what you get if you buy a product that runs non-legitimate hard/software..

I don't understand where the hate is coming from, and you as someone with a background in software development should know better: 1) The new firmware has a new major version (2.x) so you shouldn't expect it to be backwards compatible. You could argue that this should be a new protocol altogether (D16-2) and I suspect this is what it'll unofficially be known as, but from Frsky's perspective this would require coordination with OpenTx and it'd be a lot more painful, whereas to the end user (of their official products) it has no real effect. 2) Frsky has no obligation to support non-frsky firmware. This is like hating Microsoft for releasing a Windows update that breaks compatibility with your pirated version of Office. Now I would understand the frustration if you could proof that the only purpose of this firmware is to break that compatibility, but do you have that proof? What if it turns out that it legitimately fixes a bug that requires a breaking change?

I'm annoyed with FrSky not just for this one thing, but for a series of anti-competitive decisions they have made. The first one was changing a component on the QX7 (inverter) so that Crossfire stopped working. I don't remember any announcement that this had been done. Just.... on the first shipment of QX7, Crossfire worked, then suddenly it didn't, and TBS had to dig through the PCB to find out why. After that, they left D16 mode out of ACCESS radios, which I believe was an attempt to create this exact same kind of schism, where users of 3rd party receivers would be forced to upgrade away from them. There was no technical reason to do this, and the proof is that, after a huge uproar from users, they added D16 in via firmware update. So now you argue this compatibility break might have been necessary, but FrSky hasn't earned any benefit-of-the-doubt here. They have demonstrated that they will break compatibility in order to force their customers away from 3rd party hardware, sometimes without ever announcing that they have done it (inverter). P.S. let's also not forget that some vendors claimed FrSky had threatened to cut them off if they sold the Jumper T16, and most vendors don't carry the Jumper as a result. This is despite the fact that the Jumper infringes on no intellectual property of Frsky. In fact, it is based on the same open-source software as FrSky's radios, and has equal right to use it.

@@JoshuaBardwell You raise some fair points about them having lost the benefit of the doubt. At the same time, I can only put myself in the shoes of their engineers. You're expecting them to support 3rd party products they have no control over, the module bay thing with the QX7 is kind of the same issue. Do they advertise that this module bay is for using with a standard, or with their own modules? As for the lack of D16 in new radios, why would they put in the effort to support an old protocol when every receiver they've sold in the last 5 years will get an access upgrade? Again, the only reason is to support non-official hardware. I think the issue is pretty clear, they don't advertise support for 3rd party receivers and they won't make any effort to take them into account when releasing upgrades, new products and so on. And why should they? Are these 3rd parties paying any licensing fees to them? Ultimately what they're doing is no different than what most technology vendors do without us questioning it, but we had all collectively fooled ourselves into thinking Frsky was akin to the Apache Foundation when they're actually Oracle. Us as consumers are free to buy from a company like Jumper, but then you might as well buy Frsky and just not upgrade if you want equivalent functionality? PD: I do agree the move to intimidate sellers was shitty. That's a different matter though. And thanks for putting in the time to make this videos and reply to random people in the Internet like me with well thought out responses. I just don't agree with your take on this particular issue :)

Has now completed my shift from FrSky. Sold my Taranis Q X7 radio and my quads above 250 gram weight. Have purchased a Tango 2 and converted my Emax TinyHawk to Crossfire. I have also an FPV Cycle BabyTooth, which still has an XM+ RX on it, but will get converted to Crossfire as well. I will not go back to FrSky for quite some time now, I would reckon.

I’m loving ACCST 2.0!! I’ve got it on all 18 of my RX’s (10 different models of RX’s too, with the majority being R-XSR’s & X8R’s) with zero issues. People are forgetting you need to upgrade the OpenTX firmware to 2.3.X, then the Internal XJT module to ACCST, then the bootloader to ACCST and then each one of the RX’s to ACCST. Works 100% and the latency reduction is superb! I do feel for all the tiny whoop 3rd party Rx fliers though.

Also, it's probably an option to spend more money with FrSky and fit an external module in the back of the Taranis that's pre 2.0.0 and update the internal module to 2.0+, then in the open tx menus you can pick internal or external module. at last that way you'd not need 2x transmitters and have both 2.x and pre 2.x compatibility.

Burning bridges helps build bigger better ones in the future! & as some one that was sold in to frsky wen I started flying multiroters from a closed loop ecosystem like spektrum this dose suck, don't get me wrong I love my x10s but from here out I'm done paying for closed loop bs without a huge pay off I guess I'm just going to pay the extra price and run crossfire on everything so I get the best of it in a closed loop I can at least trust to be worth the pain. 🍻cheers🥃

Good news is that the open source 4in1 jr module firmware now supports the newest and current ACCST 2.1 protocol. This is great because it means that the encryption has been broken. :-) Bad thing is that we now need to relate to yet another protocol.

An issue was uncovered in Germany that has required FRsky to amend the ACCST protocol to correct lost frame error. You can find full details on the rcgroups web site. Presently the v2.0.1 is an early release fixing the lost frames bug but has also introduced some telemetry bugs. I would wait until the next release before upgrading to v2.x.x There is nothing wrong with FRsky protecting its own IP. So if you want to continue flying your Whoops don't upgrade your radio to v2.x.x

Thanks for the video, i started to go crazy... Scew frsky. I think i will upgrade my whoops to elrs (+0.5g -.- ), upgrade the firmware chunk in a elrs module and never look back. Next radio will be no more frsky. Lesson learned

I am a “happy Frsky user”, but I bought my transmitter right before the shenanigans really started to happen. I’m not looking in to replacing a brand new transmitter that works fine, but I will not be recommending Frsky to any new pilots. I’m really hoping that smaller DJI options eventually are available. When the DJI system came out, I thought it would be a long time before anything smaller than the original air unit would be available, then the Caddx Vista was released.

Your integrity as a reviewer above all, Joshua. As a former PR rep at a hardware manufacturer I can assure you that it's for the best. Your not selling their products, you review from the customer perspective. And that also means burning their bad decisions, which they probably not all agree upon within the company itself. In the end they depend more on you, than you do on them. As soon as they got something new and groundbreaking, it will end up on your desk no matter what you've said in the past...

I bought some FrSky receivers because they are good but thats the end of it --- bb

I was now choosing my first serious radio to buy, and almost settled on buying FrSky but after watching your and few other videos explaining situation, I decided against it and ordered Jumper instead. As a software engineer I'm too much familiar with a practice when a company intentionally breaks compatibility, APIs or protocols to tighten the grip on their customers and how much it hurts users and industry in general.I'm not going to support such behaviour.

Do you have any idea how many hours of my life I've lost trying to figure this mess out? I've invested so much of my hard-earned money into an open platform that has now turned into a locked out ecosystem which I don't want to be part of. I love my Q X7. I pimped it out. I upgraded it. It's mine. It has always worked flawlessly. It never let me down. That is until I started messing at updating the firmware on a new R-XSR receiver in order to get telemetry through 'super-duper' FPort, and then sh*t hit the fan, and now I feel totally stuck into something I wasn't clearly told I was getting into, given the sheer magnitude of it's impact on a FrSky-ish RC fleet owner. Was FrSky acquired by Apple or what? What a mess, man. Very bad business. Currently looking at the Jumper T16, I'm only hearing good things about it. Thank you for your work; I'm glad you vented it off before going to bed cuz I really feel you on this one.

I tried that update on my internal TX off my Taranis Q X7 some days ago. Did that as I found the update while adding a R-XSR to my new BetaFPV HX115 (because I was missing telemetry / BF Scripts with xm+). I was really happy that I had "the newest and best" software just to find out that 4 other of my quads didn't work anymore. Not fun and I think FrSky is on the wrong road with that decisions.

If other companies could get it right, this would be moot point for our part of the hobby. We need crossfire built into whoop boards (I know, betafpv, but you know what I mean) and for the Tango 2 to have a bigger screen. TBS would dominate then. When I first saw the screen on the new radio, I was like "I'm supposed to setup models looking at a postage stamp sized screen? Seriously?". I'm sure in the heck not going to setup models while wearing some hefty reading glasses or a magnifying glass in one hand. I guess TBS thinks everyone has perfect 20/20 vision, my watch screen is 2x the size of the Tango 2 screen. I understand smaller means more comfort and better battery life, but c'mon, that screen is too darn small. Can't hop on the hype train, I'll stick with what I have.
