This will show you how to bleed brakes by yourself!
very simple process that you can do with very minimal tools.
Tube size: 3/8-Inch Diameter by 1/4-Inch Clear Vinyl Tubing
Disclaimer: Careful doing this on certain makes and models. The ABS pump can get activated and push out all the brake fluid. Which will cause the master cylinder to run dry. This will happen if you have your key on and in some cases, it can happen without your key on.
There's certain ABS pumps that will allow passive bleeding, which it doesn't need to be activated via scan tool to get bled. While there are others that need to be activated via scan tool to get all of the old fluid out of the pumps.
Like always, do your research before attempting any work on your vehicle and be safe!

I have been spinning wrenches for over 20 years. I have seen countless products and tools designed to allow one person to bleed brakes by themselves. This however, this has to be one of the best tricks I have seen. Definitely a good one for when you need to bleed a caliper or brake hose. Not sure how well or It would work bleeding a ABS pump but still a useful trick to know
@SlothKingGarage
@SlothKingGarage 2 года назад
Love hearing this kind of stuff! As for the ABS modules, as you'd know, there are certain pumps that would need to be activated with a scan tool to get all the fluid out from those. One work-around is to go to an empty parking lot and slam on your brakes a few times to activate the ABS module, then bleed the brakes again to get that fluid out. Not the best procedure, but it'll get the job done.

@natecaine7473
@natecaine7473 4 месяца назад
@@jgregg7100 The technique in the video used PRESSURE from the master cylinder to PUSH fluid. Once the bubbles are in the bottle, then any back pressure (when you release the brake pedal) will gently suck only fluid back up since the tube is submerge in brake fluid. No bubbles! In contrast the VACUUM technique, relies on a tight seal all around, and when you suck too much with the vacuum pump, you will suck in air bubbles from anything not 100% tight. This is inferior technique.

Another one man bleeding tip: Believe it or not you don't have to pump the brake pedal, just put on the clear hose on the bleeder nut and put a bottle with some brake fluid and the hose submerged in it and crack the bleeder valve nut and slowly the brake fluid will empty into the bottle, and just keep the master brake reservoir full, gravity will do the rest, you can even do all the wheels at once if you have a hose and bottle or can at each one.

It'll be a little hard to tell at first, but new brake fluid will be a bit more transparent yellow. While old brake fluid will have a darker yellow tint to it. Once you have some of the old brake fluid in the bottle, it'll be easier to compare the two.

I realize I’m a little late on this, but I had a question. When bleeding the brake, how will I know if there is air in the tube leading from the reservoir to the brakes. Additionally, after having started the brake bleeding process, how will I know when all air has been pushed out? Sorry, this would be my first time, and with costs piling up, I wanted to learn how to the do the maintenance of my vehicle myself.
@SlothKingGarage
@SlothKingGarage Год назад
One way to tell if you have air in your lines is if your brake pedal feels squishy. Like very squishy. When you're bleeding the lines, you'll see air bubbles get pushed out through the tube. Once you don't see anymore, then that means there's no more air in that line/caliper. Do it for every brake caliper and you'll be set. Just start from the rear and work your way up front, usually ending on the driver side.

@SlothKingGarage
@SlothKingGarage 5 месяцев назад
Well I said "pump the brakes until all of the air is out" lol. So when you're doing this whole process, you're supposed to do this while the vehicle is off. No need to have it on unless you're using a scan tool to activate the ABS pump to bleed the air out of it. (You can also activate it without a scan tool, but you run the risk of having the pump stay on and causing the master cylinder to run dry) Hope this clears it up!
@MURDOG2002
@MURDOG2002 4 месяца назад
Quick question, do you do this with the engine running or not running?
@AT-wl9yq
@AT-wl9yq 4 месяца назад
You can do it either way. However, if you start out with the engine not running, its easier to feel what's going on as you're pumping the brakes. keep in mind that this procedure won't bleed the whole system. It only works for air trapped after the abs hydraulic pump. Basically you're just doing the calipers and the lines connected to them.

No, you do it with the car off. It won't be hard to press since you're opening the bleeder valve, which let's air/brake fluid out. The only reason why the pedal is hard, is because the brake system is closed. Once any part of it is open, it'll be soft.

When replacing A caliper ....do you pinch the brake fluid tube with rubber tip lock plyers and then simply disconnect the caliper and replace with new part ? (To block the air) ... @@septsixquatredeux Yeah you can definitely do that. Good call on wanting to use those rubber tip locking pliers. Doing that will also help to reduce the amount of brake fluid that will drip out, so you don't have to rush to install the new caliper. Only other tip of advice I'd give you, is to not let the caliper hang on the brake line if you have to put it down for a second. Just grab something to suspend it, that way the weight isn't on the line itself. Anyway, have fun doing it!

Now if you can't bleed them, I would try putting them in the maintenance mode. Each manufacture has a different procedure to do that, so look up the process for your specific vehicle

@SlothKingGarage
@SlothKingGarage 7 месяцев назад
I would avoid using water, just in case it does get sucked into the caliper. Water is the last thing you want in your brake system, as it can lower the boiling point of the brake fluid and it'll cause corrosion to form in the caliper/lines. What I would recommend, is just use a little bit of new brake fluid. Just enough to submerge the line in the bottle

Can this be done with the Toyota Prius? Because i'm not allowed to open my door apparently while doing this
@SlothKingGarage
@SlothKingGarage 11 месяцев назад
After looking into it, you cannot use this procedure for your Prius. You'll have to get a hand vacuum pump. If you open the door on a Toyota/Lexus Hybrid, it'll activate the pump. If I had a Hybrid, I would make a video on how to do it. But "The Car Care Nut" has a great video on how to bleed the brakes on a hybrid! Go check him out, you'll be set once you watch his procedure.

Yes, start with the rear driver, rear passenger, front passenger and end on front driver side
@oliver_klozoff
@oliver_klozoff Год назад
Warning, do not do this with a Toyota. The second you touch that brake pedal the abs pump will activate and pump your master cyl dry in a hurry. Some will keep going after you let off the pedal to try to build pressure.
@SlothKingGarage
@SlothKingGarage Год назад
All I own is Toyotas, I haven't experienced that issue ever. Sounds like you have the key on when you do it, which you're not supposed to.
@oliver_klozoff
@oliver_klozoff Год назад
@@SlothKingGarage it depends on the year, but it's actually a handy bleed feature. Just have your assistant hold the pedal down, open the bleeder and it pumps it out. It is supposed to stop when you release the pedal. I've heard of that not quite happening and it pumping it down. Abs is always live, key on or off. .you should know that.
@oliver_klozoff
@oliver_klozoff Год назад
@@SlothKingGarage also key on is the only way some makes are able to be bled because you have to activate the abs bleed function on your scan tool
@SlothKingGarage
@SlothKingGarage Год назад
@@oliver_klozoff Yeah I know it's supposed to be on when you're using the scan tool, so the ABS can get flushed. But that's for certain ABS modules as well. Some will just flush without being activated and others need to be activated via scan tool. Which you probably already know. But anyway, not here to bash knowledge. My whole thing was how you worded the beginning, definitely don't want to scare people off by saying "not to do it on a Toyota". But a disclaimer, "hey careful doing it because....". Which I could totally add in my description as well, and will do so people are aware of it.

@@SlothKingGarage I bet that's what's wrong with my truck. It's nine years old and had the original tires on it so I suspect that the rubber lines are probably holding the original brake fluid.. how often should you replace your rubber brake lines? Thanks in advance
@SlothKingGarage
@SlothKingGarage Год назад
@@billkincer4256 Oh man, yeah that fluid is very old. You're supposed to change it every 2-3 years. (Your manufacturer will probably have a mileage interval. But 2-3 is what everyone goes by.) Since brake fluid is hygroscopic, it absorbs water. Which reduces its boiling point and can cause rust to build up in the lines. Since it's that old, I'd change it, then do it again about 6 months later. Just so it has time to break down any deposits

You really should do all 4, in the order specified by the manufacturer. Usually the furthest from the master cylinder first. Do you need to? Probably not. But who wants to gamble with brakes? Better to do it right and not have any problems. Most shops would probably bleed all four even replacing one or two.. you really should bleed all 4 any time a brake line is loosened or replaced. I'm not an expert mechanic though.

Hi. so i noticed my brake pedal a bit stiff after i refilled my brake fluids but did not bleed the brakes. Would this be the main cause of a stiff brake pedal? thanks
@SlothKingGarage
@SlothKingGarage Год назад
Hey! So it could be a number of things like, a failing brake booster, one or two calipers that are starting to seize up or a vacuum hose that's bad. Have you driven it around? If it's just stationary and you pump the brakes a few times (especially without the car running), it will feel stiff. Now, if the fluid hasn't been flushed in a while, there could be some small deposits that have built up. You can try flushing the fluid and see if it clears up the issue.
@cloudchaser9951

@SlothKingGarage
@SlothKingGarage Год назад
@@cloudchaser9951 Hmm, well, if the pads were worn down and you had to top off some brake fluid. That would also cause a stiffer feeling since there is more fluid pushing against the pads. Does the vehicle stop fine when you drive it? And also, calipers can last a while, depends if you change the brake fluid every 2-3 years. If it's not done regularly, they will wear out sooner due to corrosion.

In a way it is. Since having the hose submerged in the brake fluid initially, it won't allow air to get back into the brake lines while flushing. Which is what the speed bleeder does via the ball bearing inside of it.

If the ABS module is on the passenger side of the engine bay. You'll start with rear driver, rear passenger, front driver and end with front passenger side. General rule is, you start with the rear but just do the opposite side of where the ABS module is located. Then end on the side where the module is located.
