How To Blend Patch Panels Into Factory Body Lines - 1930 Ford Model A

Over the past few months Matt has been chipping away at the rust repair on Aaron's 1930 Model A Roadster. One of the biggest battles is the inconstancy of aftermarket patch panels. Almost all patch panels will be slightly different then the originals and they even tend to have differences side to side. While this roadster isn't going to be a full out show car, Matt wants the patches to give the appearance of original sheet metal. Matt walks us through the process of blending the body lines at the wheel arch between the patch panel and the original line. The patch panel has a slightly larger body bead, which does not flow together well. Matt works his magic and gets the two flowed together nicely.

I'd say it was a job well done Matt. From the previous videos working on the door and panel, the door lines are great, gaps are even and the tweaking on this video should be a tutorial on how to get the lines to match. ❤️👍🍻

Nice work Matt, Aaron will have a great car when you are done. Please, please, please do a video on the rear corners on the roadster. The patch panels are awful and it is one of the great styling details on the body. Ya gotta get it right. Thank you for this video. The Roadster Gods are smiling.

Matt good idea with the hacksaw blades i must try that as they looked to work better than the body saw blades, good work on re sculpting that patch panel, its makes you wonder where they get there specs from when making patch panels. Cheers
@IronTrapGarage
@IronTrapGarage 4 года назад
The bad fitment is a mixture of inconsistent panel making when the car was made, and when the patch panel is reproduced.
@patmclean1951
@patmclean1951 4 года назад
Hey Matt, have you tried filming someting like this through a welding lens to see if we could see what you see during one of the welds? Might be cool to see how the metal/rod heat flows together.

Looks great! Nicely done. Isn't the tig weld easier (softer) to grind then mig?
@IronTrapGarage
@IronTrapGarage 4 года назад
Yup! That's why Matt tig welds all of his panels. allows the weld to be crushed with a hammer and dolly, and is easy to grind

I understood all you were saying on welding the gap cause I've been oxy/gas welding since Vietnam. I'm new to short arc welding except stick. I just got a Mig this spring. I know how I would vary the heat with gas while bridgeing the gap on the two pieces like you did but how do you do that with the TIG torch and maintain a arc as it doesn't seem like your moving your hand?

Frustrating that patch panels are so crappy. Manufacturers can just as easily make a perfect patch panel as a poor one. I had an old timer friend who would use the analogy of baking a shitty cookie. Why bother? Nice job BTW!

Its a combination of a lot of things. Im sure the body lines on the Model As were not all precision perfect leaving the factory. Makes creating patch panels difficult
