Just today on the News our local Walmart (Buckeye, AZ) had a shoplifter trying to get away from the Police - a good citizen was able to pepper spray that person so the Police could contain them. Really appreciate this trick sir. I would call this "the core-technique" of aikido.

Definitely great advice, moving into the outside of the punch is optimal but if need be to the inside you try and get in about 3-4 inches from the attacker and strike as you demonstrated, this is what I like to teach. Thank you for sharing.

3 options... punch first, move in then do whatever, step back out of range... they all work but the first two you must take their center. The real secret of aikido is to strike first. Also the other guy is at his most vulnerable from the time he's decided to strike until the strike is completed 100%... during this time you can take him out easiest. Seems weird that he's at his weakest when he's striking, but it's true.

If they want to "take you down" then the stupid fools need to STOP punching altogether!!! Punching is STUPID-- boxing is STUPID--- open hand strikes are much more effective- and safer for the one doing them--- and you can take someone down a LOT more efficiently with them.. or an elbow.. (I use my cane-- and can EASILY handle multiple attackers with it).
