Punching, as well as blocking punches looks a lot different in the street. In this video we will focus on blocking. #selfdefense #blockingpunches #selfdefensetraining

I completely agree. I call it taking up his space; for example if he sends a right and you just cover then he has the space to also send the left. You want to cover while at the same time send a right to take up the space he would use for his left. The faster you go from defense to offense, the more certain you will win. If your attacker is not on the defense, he will win every time.

Excellent, realistic, and mentioning keeping the chin down, seen a few fights where chins end up pointing up and getting tagged, really enjoyed the realism of your techniques. thank you, keep on,

The elbow cover blocking is Great way to lower your chance of taking a solid shot while being still being in position to counter strike, great video!

Excellent exposure... the concept of closed defense and fast response is the key to avoid scaleted damage from the thread.

Your Kung Fu sound affects were perfect. 😄 I'm glad you mentioned movement, especially head movement. If anyone wants to see good head movement, watch Mike Tyson. Most people think of Tyson as a powerful puncher, which he is. However, he has very good head movements in his fights too.

In a recent short, you spoke about the value of sprinting. I can give you a lot of reasons why I don't do it at age 77. However, I will provide a slight alternative. I wear heavy, heavy work boots all day long. I wear them when I take the daily walk. Have two pair. It means that when I am up and dumping the trash, walking in the supermarket, going back and forth to the garage, I am exercising. At one point in my life, I walked for 6 months in boots. No sneakers. No flip flops. No riding in a car/train/plane. It took about two of those months to really get in shape. However, it does work.

I would like to see a part two of this video. Talking how to either block in a way to damage your attackers hands or legs for example. By either just a block or a block followed up with a quick strike to the attacking limb. I've seen these techniques used both in nonnweapon and some scenarios with blades.
@CanadaFree-ce9jn
@CanadaFree-ce9jn 8 дней назад
We have done such things in class, there is a lot of it in FMA, but it is a more complex skill to apply. Even using an elbow to bust a fist is a smaller target than hitting his head. Apart from actual limb breaks, you are most likely to just bruise or sting the limb than take it out completely. The head is the computer that shuts down the body (mind you, this is sometimes best done by dropping that computer on the ground). I do encourage you to check the various limb destruction techniques out and find out which ones you can get to work best for you. If a person is just watching RU-vid and not training in a school, then I'd suggest sticking with striking over fancy limb destruction.

Great video. Mid-60's here, earned my Black Belt in TKD in 2001. Our blocks are designed to break and are actually strikes, in my opinion. lol But I agree with you 100% on footwork being important. In my opinion, footwork is the key to successful blocking. Before entering organized Martial Arts in the early 90's, (in my 30's), I had been in lots of street fights since childhood. Bounced in a bar in my late 20's. Took a few beat downs. One thing I learned was to head butt the incoming punches, if all else failed. I train each day in my gym, and believe I'd still eat a couple of punches before delivering my damaging strikes.

Good video. Short and sweet. With your background I know its gotta be tough to put together a short clip on defense with any measure of depth and reality that will leave a viable impression. Nothing can take the place of a good training regiment. Realistic scenario based training is the best. Being completely honest with one's self on there health and physicality is critical. Situational awareness can be taught although its probably the least taught or even thought about. But I digress. Good video.

Keeping your head down reminds me of a fight I got into with a person who was a full 10 inches taller than me and about 80 lb heavier. I grabbed his collar with one hand and punched straight UP and into his face with a dozen shots. He was also hitting me. The result was that I had three or four lumps on the top of my head but no damage to my face; whereas, he ended up battered and bloody. Being short, I kept my head down and absorbed his punches on the top of my head. That was a LONG TIME AGO. As a senior, my best defense is situational awareness to avoid a fight, altogether. It pains me when I think of all of my diminished skills, as a senior. Father Time is undefeated.

Great video. I would like to see a video. With a theme of you in the house and get attacked by a home invader. And what things in the house you can use as weapons. For defense and quickly get you on the offensive.

Thanks for the video. I was once in a class where we spent part of a session blocking telegraphed, "haymaker" punches. The instructor said that if punch is coming in wild and is telegraphed enough that we can see exactly where it will come, we should block by throwing a forearm strike into the incoming punch. The idea was to strike the puncher's wrist with the hard bone on the outside of our forearms. As we practiced, I could feel that blocking that way wasn't bad but having someone hit my wrist with the hard, upper part of the forearm was painful. I found myself pulling my punches a bit as the exercise continued. Maybe this technique is considered bad overall. Ever since that exercise, I've thought that if I have time, I'd like to use that hard, striking block against a heavily telegraphed punch. If the contact is just right, the attacker's hand might get numb or tingly for a moment. If he is shocked by that moment of pain, I would have a chance to hit and maybe make him decide not to mess with me. If you saw a roundhouse punch coming soon enough, would you consider blocking by making a counter-strike to the puncher's hand or forearm?

I was a competitive boxer when I was younger, and just the habit of keeping my chin down prevented me from ever getting seriously hurt or ko’d in a street fight. I’ve had multiple people break their hand on the top of my head. You will most likely catch some glancing blows, but they are not even worth mentioning; they do superficial damage and you won’t feel them. The other thing is to never keep your head stationary. People underestimate how difficult it is to land a clean shot on a moving target. I’m not talking about bouncing around like a moron, just changing you level, pivoting, and slight head movement. And most importantly. Always attack. Do not stand there and block. You want to have defense, without being defensive. Most people on the street leave themselves wide open when attacking. If you can change your level a little while moving in, you can make them walk right into your punch, and then it is nighty night. It’s impossible for someone to actively defend and attack at the same time, so they are most vulnerable while attacking. Counter them as they attack. If you can do that, then even a jab can knock them out. The best way though is to have the situational awareness to notice the problem before you are attacked, and then preemptively strike.

Notice the covering demoed protects the orbital and temple and upper jaw--edit, obviously, any part of the jaw. The front and back of our skulls can take a lot, those other regions can't. Always love the content!

your content and teaching style is awesome man, very relatable and understandable. was wondering if you could do a video on defending against an attacker with a blade, including the variables such as if we have one or we don't. I apologize if you have made this already I posted this comment before looking back at all of your videos lol. anyway once again thanks for your content my man, I know I speak for everyone here that it resonates with the true men (which I believe are the ones watching your stuff). respect!

If you can't "Fight" don't try it. You don't know the skill level of the attacker. Attack him dirty. No rules. Don't go for a head shot, go low. Go first if he crosses the line before he hurts you. Surprise, don't play his game.
