I live off grid in Denali Alaska. When I go into the bush, I carry in my ruck or my quad a Mora, a Cold Steel O1 Tailmaster, A Cold steel Kukri, and a Leatherman Surge. If Im riding my Quad, which I often am, because im old.. ,i carry a council axe and a bow saw. Up here, i use what's proven itself to me.. OH I also never leave home without my 4 max scout folder. Its beyond heavy duty..
@garyb5439 Dang it.. I wish I knew that before i moved to Alaska purchased property, cleared some and built my log home that is too deep in the bush to access electricity. You must be really smart to know so much
1- Cold steel trail master in san mai 3 2- tom brown tracker 3- cold steel drop forged boot knife (element of surprise if i am ever in a bind) 4- any Mora. You're right, moras do finess well
I have a Mora companion, but I'd rather take my old school Gerber in place of the Mora, it has a blade similar to the Mora and a woodland camo handle, so that's 1 2. For defensive tactics I'd take Gerber CFB tanto (as seen in Olympus has fallen used by Gerard Butler) 3. My Becker BK7 or my esee 4 for bush/fire-craft 4. My coldsteel true flight. That's for knives most will know. Now for my normal carry 1.my leatherman surge black 2.my tanto w/red handle (my design) 3. My large recurve with serrations (Also my design) 4.my coldsteel kukri machete
ESSE6.,ESSE3. ( I wear it as a neck knife), Mora companion spark and an ULU for food prep. I didn’t even know they made a tactical 4 , I am working to hard it’s cutting into my knife time.
1. Buck 119. I've gutted a lot of deer with that knife before I learned a smaller one works just as well. But, after 35 years, it deserves to go with me. 2. KA-BAR Cutlass Machete. It is tough and cuts. It would be my first choice for a fighting knife. 3. Cold Steel Hudson Bay Camp Axe. It is light for an axe but works better than a hatchet. 4. Not as picky, but a small pocket folder with 2 or 3 blades. Something like Buck Knives Stockman Pocket Knife. Honorable mention: As a kid I always wanted, and then bought when I turned 18, a Buckmaster. It would be a great fighting knife, but it is heavy for what it is.
I think we are talking 4 knives but if we include a multitool, here it is: Surge Multitool Condor bushman parang Gerber strongarm (unused in a bugout bag) Brother Scandi D2 or Condor Terrasaur. Reserve: Cold Steel Master Hunter (toss up between this and the scandi
Dam this is a tough 1 if were leaving out folders & multi tools & swords 1) TOP's Prather War Bowie 2) SOG Northwest Ranger 3) Off Grid Sierra 4) CS special projects Kukri
1) Leatherman Surge with bit kit (finer tasks, repairs, scavenging) 2) Gerber Strongarm (fighting and bushcraft) 3) Gransfors Bruks Scandinavian forest axe (wood processing and shelter building) 4) Silky Gomboy 270 (wood processing and shelter building) That is my list, but it includes an axe and a saw, since I would rather have those 2 things than another blades. 🙂
I was thinking a similar list. But I'm too connected to the land to bug out, so I'll have all of them till the end. But if I were younger, I have my 35 year old Buck almost 6" blade full tang and rubberized grip, a pound and a half camp ax on a slightly shorter than typical handle, my 8" fillet knife, a 28" spade with solid wood to a D handle handle and a diamond 325 grit/1200 grit Sharpal to maintain them. But I would deeply miss my pocket knives, my Schrade kukri, my KABAR, my silky 7" medium tooth, my boning knife, my high carbon chef knife, and my favorite wave serration steak knives, my double edge razor, the first aid shears, the S&W throwing knives and hatchets, the 16" chain saw, the roofing hatchet, the two utility knives, about 50 disposable utility knife blades, the two cheap WalMart machetes (gifts), oh, and the wood chipper that I just used on 4 dozen corn cobs to add to the compost.
My Cold Steel Bowie machete, Cold Steel bushman, BPS adventurer and Mora 546. Or Case raider bowie, Cold Steel GI tanto , Cold Steel peace maker 2 and Mora companion.
Hi, I'm German and a bug out bag over here would look totally different than in the US. No weapons but lots of foot and goodies for trading ,tobacco and schnapps. People come together in tragedy, they don't rip each other's heads off. ;) But if I would have to take 4 knives I would take those. Leatherman Wave AD 10 SOG neck knife Omega Slings Belt Knife
LOL, I have a box full like yours. 1) Cold Steel Magnum Kukri machete 2) Cold Steel Master Hunter 3) Spyderco Street Bowie 4) Ontario SP-1 Combat I didn't include any multi-tools because I have a small tool kit with quality tools already packed.
Carbon steel Machete. sheathed on my pack. Victorinox Fieldmaster. Around my neck in a leather snap over sheath. Buck Strider. On my belt. SRK. on my belt or pack. You said 4 knives. In addition to those, a Riggers hatchet and a Corona folding saw.
SAK huntsman in my left pocket always. 1. Crkt hunt n fisch, all the small tasks (my edc forever gift from daughters). 2. Bk 16, all the tough jobs cause it can. 3. BST ambassador, larger hunt blade (gift of 30 yrs ago will always take it no matter what). 4. Hatchet, chopping.
1. Swiss Army RANGER 57 M GRIP: for fine work, game processing, and tools for scavenging. 2. Leatherman Wave with bit kit: for repairs and scavenging of items I find. 3. Cold Steel Tai Pan: for my defensive blade, I like the 13” dagger with wide enough bellies that it also slashes well 4. Gerber Strong Arm: for heavy-ish duty bushcraft and general knife tasks. As a fellow knife nut, this was a hard choice. I would have liked to have a small hatchet or kukuri. However, in a real SHTF situation, having tools that can do repairs, open cans, have awls, and more just seems to me to be a higher priority.
I'm gonna start with a good machete probably a Cold Stee. Second One of the new Eafengrow big boys most likely the EF141. For fine work a Mora Kan'sbol and a Cold Steel 4 Max Scout for a stout folder
The indios in S. Am. Use machetes for their everything blade. They live and thrive way back of the rear of BFE. Don't know if they still offer it, the Latin Machete that Lynn Thompson used to sell is the best machete I've ever used for real world hard work. I don't ever plan on doing any carving or any bushcrafty stuff during a SHTF or real survival situation, so all the trendy stuff wouldn't suit my purposes Good Luck
That's a mighty fine list, my friend. It's damned impressive how tough, sharp, and capable Cold Steel machetes are, especially for the money. And their 4 Max Scout is a great sidekick.
@@kentallard8852 folding saws are underrated.I go camp about once a week, and ALL my wood processing is either by breaking dead branches / trees, or sawing them. 0 chopping, waste of emergy and high risk, low reward.
Start it off with my Leatherman Wave+ and my White River Ursus 45 in 3V, the two knives I EDC anyways. Finish it with the pair of CRKT blades on my A-to-B Bag and plate carrier, a Kangee T-hawk and a Sangrador, respectively. The Leatherman has small blades for finer tasks, a small saw to effeciently harvest small tinder, and a small file. It really comes in handy for all sorts of basic everyday menial cutting chores. The Ursus 45 in 3V is an ergonomic and indestructible utility knife that could serve for defense, or about anything else, from harvesting game to shelter construction. I could use it as an e-tool or pry bar if I had to. In the forested Rocky Mountains, a small axe or tomahawk is an indispensable piece of kit. The Kangee has done a lot of stuff for me; wood processing, breaching, harvesting game. When you've seen how easily it effortlessly takes apart a deer, you understand the terrifying implications with regard to its use as a weapon...truly devastating. Then the Sangrador, a small double-edged dagger is what I feel is the ultimate fighting knife. It is sharp all over, lightening fast and responsive. Apltly named, sangrador translates from Latin for bleeder. I think these four covers all the bases with some overlap, and my drawer allows me to outfit my friends and family as well. It would be hard to leave some, like my Tops Longhorn Bowie and HOG 4.5 behind, but knowing my wife and kids have good cutting tools on them means I don't really have to.
As some one who has over 100 knives, plus a collection of Tomahawks and Axes, swords and machete's. Trying to pick just four. Not easy. But let me start by saying, I do not drive, and I need some special gear to help me through the day. So I have a EDC bag that goes with me every time I lever the house. In that bag I have a Swiss Army Deluxe Tinker knife, a old time Gerber Multi Pliers, with full size jaws and one hand open-able, and the newest addition to the bag a Cold Steel Voyager Drop Point folding knife, with four inch blade. These are always with me. So I will not could them. As for the four. 1. Mora Heavy Duty Companion. Great Blade. 2. Condor Tool and knife, Hudson Bay knife, the big one. 3. Buck 119 Special 4. Condor Tool and knife, Golok Machete. For wood processing and self defense. And of course my Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener. Got to keep them blades sharp. Now of course I will be a wise guy and add my Nordland type C viking axe, haa a great blade and a hammer poll. And my Stanley Folding Pocket saw, with a selection of blades. So there you go. I think I would also have a firearm with me. But that's a story for another day :)
I am sorry you are disabled. I am confined to a transfer chair and a recliner. Since I am permanently disabled, I would be bugging in and would have the extra security of firearms.
Besides my wallet, keys & cell phone, 3 things I never leave the house without: ZT0350, one of my Gerber multi-tools (I've got a few) & MagLight flashlight. Sometimes I'll change out the ZT for my Buck 110 Folder, depends on where I'm going. I've had family members sneer & laugh at me for carrying those 3 items on me all the time.....until 1 of those items ends up being needed by said family members. Then I let them know how unprepared they are. ALL my friends know I carry these items. Even in a suit & tie, I've got those 3 items on me. Better to have it & not need it than need it & not have it.
Cold steel bushman turned into short a spear for reach, multitool or Swiss army knife (Huntsman), BG Ultimate pro knife. Some kind of a machete maybe the cold steel jungle machete. Hope there is no zombies in this Apocalypse or my chubby a** is dinner.
You have two similar knives in the Esse and the strongarm. I would go with; 1. Instead of my Companion which is a coin toss, I would go with the OKC Rat 1. I think a folding blade, concealment-wise is important 2. Gerber Prodigy - alternate would be my 50 year old USMC K-Bar 3. OKC Rat 7 4. OKC 22” machete. That’s what I own by any machete style blade would be fine. If I could only take two it would be the machete and the Prodigy/K-Bar Found that to be a good combination in my MC days. Plus I could shave with my K-Bar. 😊
My Gerber Mk. 1, my Camillus Kabar fighting knife, my Roman Gladius sword, my U.S. Army jungle machete with U.S machete sheath and built in sharpener. And my Swiss Army Knife.
Cold steel Kurk I machete in o1, kabar bk9 I have a small survival tin and a smaller blade attached to the sheath as well not sure if that counts towards my blade limit, my zero tolerance 0550 (hood sturdy folder), and my shiv work clinch pick not only as a last ditch delt defense knife but I think the blade shape will lend itself to small utility task and food ans game prep as well
I'm getting a esse stainless steel izula knife soon. Cost extra but it won't get rusty. I do have a big modern ka-bar knife. To heavy for my bad back. So my friend is getting it. I also carry a folding Gerber Bushcraft style knife. For defense I have my folding spyderco knife that's half serrated. Finally a 8 inch straight dagger.
Love these kind of vids I was so hoping you went with a kukri for your big blade I would have 5 I never go anywhere without my SAK field master in my pocket as for my other 4 I absolutely agree toes the companion or a mora BCB my fighting blade I’m going with my bark river JX4 aka the bushbat , number 3 I’m going back to mora and the garberg and finally I’m ending it out with my condor kukri as well .
Here is what Im taking.. 1 - CS Espada XL 2 - CS Royal Kukri 3 - CS Thai machete 4 - CS Black Bear Bowie Yes.. I am a proud Cold Steel Fanboy as you can clearly see.
Well without having had the opportunity to try all my blades I think these would be my choices: For a large blade, to process wood and chop vines, my Kershaw Camp 10 or my Schrade SCHF9. General purpose: a Gerber Prodigy or a QSP Bison. For a tactical type self-defense knife: the Cold Steel Recon Tanto or the Steel Will Argonaut. For survival and Bushcraft I would go with the Mora Garberg. For a light knife to cut food I'd choose the very first knife I ever purchased which is my Buck Woodsman.
The first thing I would grab would be something that could excel at multiple tasks. Which would be my Zombie Tools Scyllis. Styled after a Persian fighting knife. But nearly a 1/4” thick of well heat treated 5160 spring steel. Can easily shrug off batoning and chopping. But could easily transition to a fighting knife. Next I would take my ESEE 4 for smaller hard use tasks and game processing. Third I would take my Kobalt folding saw with interchangeable blades for metal, wood and plastic. And lastly probably a folder. Which, as much as I love all my fancy folding knives, would probably be my Ontario RAT-1. Until I get a Cold Steel AD-10 anyways haha
I believe a bug out bag should have the best you can afford for all people, don’t want too weak of steel or otherwise one may end up using the wrong tool for the right job ❤
My Grandfather made a Knife in early 20th century so that's coming. I have a Tops Frog Market, odd shaped but a solid slicer for camp or kitchen. An LT Wright Kephart for the field. A Silky type saw for wood.
1 a swiss army knife w wood saw metal file and 8 other blades..2cold steel OSS, carbon V blackened blade,,3 buck124 4 a quality made Brazilian machete w saw teeth on the back properly set and sharpened..FYI all cutting teeth on a wood blade (circular saw,jig saw, hand saw,) must be "set" or bent, so that the cut is wider than the blade,,cheap chinese machetes ,(after shtf no telling what you will run arcross),you can look down the top and see the teeth are straight and flat like the blade,,every other tooth must be set,, you can do this with a vise and a hammer and nail, clamp machete so just the cutting teeth are above the vise jaw,and lightly tap the first tooth away from you, next tooth tap towards you, next tooth away , repeat till done..a quality machete w sawback teeth will already have this done,u look down the top and you will see every other tooth bent so the cut is wider than the blade..survival wire ropes dont last too long,or you can carry bow saw blades and a few bolts with you for a wood cutting saw..and the buck 119 is very popular ,BUT its a partial tang knife, and can be broken,, the buck 124,@ $200 is a bit pricy ,but its a full tang knife, unbreakable with two hands and 300#, look for a used one online..thats dinged up..or a cold steel GI tanto , if your on a budget.
Swiss Champ for the tool I need when I need it CRKT Clever Girl folder for up-close-and-personal discussion ESEE 6 for bushcraft and general badassery Cold Steel 1917 Frontier Bowie, because once in awhile you'll need the court of last resort
I also choose my Condor heavy duty kukri, Joker for bushcraft (cant remember the name) Tops S A.W. for tactical uses, and for fine tasks i just don't know.. so many choices. Probably a Buck or a cold steel folder
I'm feeling the consequences of a life of working with my hands. I no longer have a skull crushing grip. Arthritis is taking a toll. I'm looking for small fixed blade EDC with a substantial grip for my old hands. A 3" blade maximum is preferred. Can anyone advise me? Thanks
There are countless options for you. The ESEE-3 comes to mind, along with Morakniv. I would find an online knife store and begin a search for three inch fixed blades, and find one that speaks to you.
The Kukri is your battle knife. In the Apocalypse you need to think about weight. Carrying water. I agree with 1 and 4. Otherwise, you need a knife that can become a spear. Or shovel.
1. Cold Steel Warcraft Tanto 7 inch blade. 2.Cold Steel Warcraft Tanto 7 inch blade. 3. Cold Steel Warcraft Tanto 12" blade. 4. Cold Steel Warcraft Tanto 12" blade.
Victorinox Swiss Tool (purchased 1998 - model unknown) Coast DX330 (new purchase, really like it so far) Smith & Wesson M&P M2.0 (unless I replace it) Case XX USMC (purchased 1989 - model unknown) could replace any above - Japan Rhino pocket knife (purchased 1983 - model unknown)
I would have to choose some of the more advanced blade steels if I were selecting blades for true survival situations. I love Esee knives, and as tried and true as 1095 has been over the many years past, I think the ship has sailed on 1095. There are just too many better steels now that surpass 1095 in every category and also are corrosion resistant.
I agree with the Mora. Since I do not have a fixed blade, I’d probably carry the Cold Steel Voyager. For wood, I’ve always used a Sven saw for backpacking and I know it will keep me warm. Ive always carried bear mace, a loud whistle, and a tiny air horn. Just because it’s sharper than a razor and I’ve used it to cut bandages, vines, and most any material, I’d feel lost without the Milwaukee spring assisted with the serration.
I have five blades for SHTF. Buck 124, Cold Steel Recon tanto. Kershaw Camp 10, 18 inch machete and Stihl hatchet strapped on bug out bag. My wife and son have their own knives, waxed canvas bedrolls, bug out bags and firearms also.
Over the years I have become more and more uncomfortable purchasing anything made in China. This includes knives. Aside from the quality not measuring up to American - made, I just cant bring myself to support the communist state when there are plenty of American - made options. Just throwing this out there. FYI - the "Seal Pup" is PRC.
Great topic! No budget knives on this journey Daniel! All are already in my Go Bag. My Hunter knife is my Shokunin Warlock hunting knife. This knife is second to none for processing all game. My Combat knife is the Ka-Bar Becker BK9. This weapon will KEAL! My Camp and Wood knife is the Big Bushcraft Hatchet knife #7. Use it one time and you'll never use another. Last but not Least...My Pangui Neck Knife. This is the one that saves you in the dark places of the world when you need a secret friend! What ya think?
Small slicing knife . I have the Boker bronco. The 3v holds an edge for a good time . My medium work /carry knife easy . My tops camp creek . Always my first choice on my hip . Large camp knife not so easy I have a few . But I think I would pack my lionsteel m7 . Last but by no means a least. The chopper . You said becker 9 and I have that blade , but sorry my esee jongalas would get strapped to the molly on my pack . So interesting I normally set my blades in pairs , ie , bronco normally pairs with m7 . For general camping with family and friends. Hunting would get the camp creek and becker . The esee lives in my truck . With an esee 3 . So interesting that I broke up the pairs instead of just grabbing 2 pair . Thanks for your effort .
Fighting knife would be tops eagle shadow I believe is what it's called I love it for all around knife my tops backpacker knife big chopping knife I would use my Sysco Bowie or my cold steel western Bowie for Bushcraft I would use my bob brothers of Bushcraft knife or my mora companion HD and for heavy chopping my condor cloudburst axe I believe them would be my number one pick from my knife box old buddy but so many to choose from that was a hard question for me to answer I build knives like tops knives only thing or brand I can compare them to
hmmm, gotta take my dive knife, my meteorite blade, my japaneese o da'chi 60inches long with 3ft blade and 2ft handle hand forged and hand made 1095 high carbon steel full tang. last would be a eastwing ax, steel handle one piece of metal and all the wood you can cut. beyond that i will take an air rifle pcp, maybe two. a battery op compresser and a way to charge it once a month. along with a hand punp. yeah alot of heavy kit. but that is why i have the all terrain 2'x4' wagon , a great dane , and a harness for him to pull it with. lead, re casting equip. and a big bag of heirloom seeds. for when i find a good spot to lay stake. a 2lb california frameing hammer that can be used as a sledge, and a roll of 4mm thick painters plastic, grommet kit and 500ft paracord. a hand saw, hack saw, some pex tubing, a shower water filter good for 30k gallons, and a couple rolls of tin foil. a bag of emergency blankets. and a 20lb bag of jasmine rice. that is about what i am sure i can haul myself if the dane does not wish to pull. a backpack with a welding striker for firestarting an a waterproof bag of flints. a ziplock of dryer lint, for tinder, all my old cell phone batteries, a 100w solar panel and power inverter and a single deep cell 12v battery 60AH. and i am pretty sure i could survive for more than a decade with that kit. less than 200 lbs in a all terrain rubbermaid wagon that can float if need be.or be attached to an ATV that is electric and can be recharged with the deep cell system. what is in your wallet. smils
Neat Knife Box! I'd take my Fiskers Splitting Axe and my Gil Hibben Kukri Fighting Knife for work, and my Gil Hibben Highlander for slicing watermelon. I always have my Leatherman on my and use that daily.
